En-14 Connections Connecting the AV Receiver Speaker Configurati on The following table indicates the cha nnels you should use depending o n the number of speakers that you have. No matter how many speakers you use, a powered subwoofer is recommended fo r a really powerful and solid bass.
Connections En-15 Attaching the Speake r Cable Label s The speaker terminals are color-coded for identification purpose. The supplied speaker cable labels are also colo r- coded and you should attach them to the positive (+) side of each speaker cable in accordance with the table above.
Connections En-16 Connecting the Speaker Cables/Powere d Subwoofers Please connect a , b , c , d , e and f for 5.1-channel surrou nd. • Pay close attention to speaker wirin g polarity. In other words, connect positive (+) terminals only to positive (+) terminals, and negati ve (–) terminals only to negative (– ) terminals.
Connections En-17 • Make sure the metal core of the wire does not have contact with the AV receiver’s rear panel. Doing so may damage the AV receiver. • Don’ t connect more than one cable to each speaker terminal. Doing so may dama ge the AV receiver.
Connections En-18 If you select the input select or butto n, the signal from the component connected to the assigned ja ck is played. • Before making any AV connections, read th e manuals supplied with your AV componen ts. • Push plugs in al l the way to make good connecti ons (loose connections can cau se noise or malfunctions).
Connections En-19 ■ MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) With its support for MHL (Mobile High-Defin ition Link), the AUX (Front) input allows you to deliver high- definition video from a connected mobile device . Connections En-20 ■ For p -compatible TV The following linked operations are enabled by connecting the AV receiver to an p -co mpatible TV. • The AV receiver will enter standby mode when the TV is set to standby.
Connections En-21 The composite vide o and comp onent video outputs pass through their re spective input signals as they are. Note • In order for the AV receiver to upconvert component input to HDMI output, the source output must be set to 480i/576i.
Connections En-22 ■ Optical digital audio Optical digital connections allow you to enjoy di gital sound such as PCM *1 , Dolby Digital or DTS. The audio quality is the same as coa xial. ■ Coaxial digital audio Coaxial digital con nections allow you to enj oy digital sound such as PCM *1 , Dolby Digital or DTS.
Connections En-23 With u (Remote Interactive), you can use the following special functions: ■ System On/Auto Power On When you start playback on a component connecte d via u , while the AV receiver is on standby, the AV receiver will automati cally turn on and select that component as the input source .
En-24 Turning On & Basic Operations Turning On/Off the AV Receiver Note • Before connecting the power cord, con nect all of your speakers and AV components. • Turning on the AV receiver ma y cause a momentary power surge that might interfere with other electrical equipment on the same circuit.
Turning On & Basic Operations En-25 When a new version of the firmware is available, the notifica tion window “ Firmware Update Available ” pops up. This notificati on only appears when the AV receiver is connected to the Internet ( ➔ pages 19 , 30 ).
Turning On & Basic Operations En-26 This step checks the co nnection of source components. With this step, you can ente r remote control codes for the components you want to operate. This step checks your network co nnection. This step ends the initial setu p process.
Turning On & Basic Operations En-27 With the supplied calib rated microphone, Audyssey MultEQ ® automatically determines the number of speakers connected, their size for purposes of bass management, opti mum crossover frequencies to the subwoofer (if present), and distances from the primary listening position.

The PLII / PLIIx and THX indicators light on the AV receiver’s display.
Playback En-50 Note *1 Pure Audio cannot be selected when Zone 2 /3 is active. Besides, if you activate Zone 2/3 while Pure Audio is selected, the listening mode will automatically switch to Direct. *2 Based on the audio channel signal contained in the source, the corresponding speakers will output the sound.
Playback En-51 Dialogue Normalization Dialogue Normalization (Dia logNorm) is a feature of Dolby Digital, which is used to keep the programs at the same average listening le vel so the user does not have to change the volume control betwee n Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD programs.
Playback En-52 You can display va rious information about the current input source as follows. The following information can be typically displayed. *1 If the input signal is digital, the signal format is displayed. With the sleep timer, you can set the AV receiver to turn off automatica lly after a specified period.
Playback En-53 When you connect an u -capable Onkyo component, you must config ure the input display so that u can work properly. This setting can be done only from the front panel. You can temporari ly mute the output of the AV receiver. You can set which speakers you want to use by priority.
Playback En-54 By using ACTIVITIES in Easy macro mode, you can sequentially operate Onkyo components via simple commands from a single-button press. These commands are user-definable. See “Using Normal Macros” ( ➔ page 90 ). ■ MY MOVIE First, the TV, the Onkyo Bl u-ray Disc player, and the AV receiver are turned on .

En-56 Advanced Operations On-screen Setup This section describes the procedure for usin g the remote controller unless otherwise specified. With the AV receiver conne cted to a TV, there are two ways of changing the settings on-screen: using the Quick Setup or the Setup Menu ( HOME ).
Advanced Operations En-57 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 56 ) *2 • The video preview is not displayed when: – HDMI IN 5/6/7 is the current HDMI input source, or – No signal is present o n the current input source. • The video of the currently-selected input is displayed on the main screen, not on a preview thumbnail.

Advanced Operations En-63 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 60 ) Component Video Input If you connect a vi deo component to a comp onent video input, you must assign that input to an inpu t selector. For example, if you connect your Bl u-ray Disc/DVD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2 , you must assign “ IN2 ” to the “ BD/DVD ” input selector.
Advanced Operations En-64 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 60 ) ■ Speakers Type(Fro nt) ` Normal : Select this if you’ve connected your front speakers normally. ` Bi-Amp : Select this if you’ve bi-amped your front speakers. ■ Powered Zone 2 ` No ` Yes : Zone 2 speakers can be used (Powered Zone 2 enabled).
Advanced Operations En-65 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 60 ) ■ Double Bass ` On ` Off(THX) Turn this setting on to b oost bass output by feeding bass sounds from the front le ft, right, and center channels to the subwoo fer.

Advanced Operations En-67 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 60 ) With the Audio Adjust func tions and settings, you can adjust the sound and listening modes as you like. Multiplex/Mono ■ Multiplex Input Channel ` Main ` Sub ` Main/Sub This setting determines which channel of a stereo multiplex source is output.
Advanced Operations En-68 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 60 ) ■ TrueHD Loud ness Management ` Off ` On This setting specifies whether or not to apply the La te Night processing on a Dolby TrueHD source . Note • When this setting is set to “ Off ”, the Late Night function for Dolby TrueHD sources is automatically fixed to “ Off ”.
Advanced Operations En-69 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 60 ) ■ Dynamic EQ ` Off ` On : Audyssey Dynamic EQ ® becomes active. The Dynamic EQ indicator will light. With Audyssey Dynamic EQ, you can enjoy great sound even when listening at low volume levels.
Advanced Operations En-70 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 60 ) IntelliV olume ■ IntelliVolume ` –12dB to 0dB to +12dB in 1 dB steps With IntelliVolume, you can set the input le vel for each input selector individually. This is useful if one of your source components is loude r or quieter than the others.
Advanced Operations En-71 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 60 ) Picture Adju st Using Picture Adjust, you can adjust th e picture quality and reduce any noise appearing on the screen. Press ENTER to view the TV picture while setting when the video source is output to HDMI OUT MAIN .

Advanced Operations En-73 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 60 ) You can assign a defau lt listening mode to each input source that will be selected auto matically when you select each input source. For exa mple, you can set the default listening mode to be used with Dol by Digital input signals.
Advanced Operations En-74 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 60 ) ■ Headphone Level ` –12dB to 0dB to +12dB With this setting, you can specify the headphone volume relative to the main volume. Th is is useful if there’s a volume difference be tween your speakers and your headphones.
Advanced Operations En-75 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 60 ) ■ HDMI Through ` Off ` BD/DV D , CBL/SAT , STB/DVR , GA ME1 , GAME2 , PC , AUX , TV/CD , PHONO : Selects the input source for which the HDMI Through functio n is enabled.
Advanced Operations En-76 Operating procedure ( ➔ page 60 ) ■ Audio Return Channel ` Off ` Auto : The audio signal from you r TV tuner can be sent to HDMI OUT MAIN of th e AV receiver. The audio return channel (ARC) function allows an ARC capable TV to send the audio stream to HD MI OUT MAIN of the AV receiver.

And, you can se lect a diff eren t source f or each room. Connecting Your Zone 2 Speakers Directly to the AV r eceiver This setup allows you to select different sources for Main ro om and Zone 2 .
Advanced Operations En-80 12V Trigger Ou t When Zone 2 is turned on , the output from the ZONE 2 12V TRIGGER OUT jack goes high (+12 V and max. 150 mA for Zone 2). Connecting this jack to a 12-volt trigger input on a component in Zone 2 wil l make that component turn on or off as the AV receiver turns on or off the Zone 2.
Advanced Operations En-81 Muting Zone 2 ■ Operating on the remote controller Tip • To unmute, press ZONE followed by MUTING again. Zone 2 can also be unmuted by adjusting the volume. Note • Only analog, NET or USB input source is output from the ZONE 2/ZONE 3 LINE OUT jacks and ZON E 2 L/R terminals.

Controlling Other Components En-84 You can reset the remote controller to its default settings. By pressing the REMOTE MODE button that’s been programmed with the remote control code for your component, you can cont rol your compon ent as described below.

Controlling Other Components En-87 RI Dock With the RI Dock, you can easily play the music of your iPod/iPhone, or watch the slideshows and videos of your iPod/iPhone on a TV.
Controlling Other Components En-88 By pressing the REMOTE MODE button that’s been programmed with the remote control code for your Dock, you can control your iPod/iPhone in the Dock with the buttons described furth er in this section. See “Entering Remote Control Codes” for deta ils on entering a remote control code ( ➔ page 82 ).
Controlling Other Components En-89 The AV receiver’s remote controller can learn the commands of other remote controllers. By transmitting, for example, the Play command from your CD player’s remote controller, the supplied remote controller can learn it and then reproduce th e exact same command when its 1 is pressed in CD remote mode.
Controlling Other Components En-90 You can program th e remote controller’s ACTIVITIES to perform a sequence of remote control actions. Example: To play a CD you typically need to perform the following actions: 1. Press RECEIVER to select the Receiver remote controller mode.
En-91 Appendix Troubleshooting If you have any trouble using the AV receiver, look for a solution in this sectio n. If you can’t resolve the issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer. If you can’t resolve the iss ue yourself, try resetting the AV receiver before contacti ng your Onkyo dealer.
