5 PREP ARATI ON BEFORE YOU BEGIN To protec t the record / playback he ad during shi pment, a pro tec- tive sl eeve is posi tioned ar ound the hea d. Gently pull open the casset te compart ment door and rem ove the sleev e before you use the cass ette rec order.
6 Instal ling Batt eri es You can power the CTR- 115 with t wo AA batteri es. We r ecom- mend alkal i ne batte ries, such as Radi oShack Cat. No . 23- 552. Cauti ons: • Use only fres h batt eries of the r equired size and r ecom- mend ed typ e. • Do not mix old and new batter ies or dif ferent t ypes of bat- teri e s.

Do not bur n or bury th em . Using AC Power To power the CTR- 115 fr om an AC out let, y ou need an AC adapter , suc h as Ra di oShack Cat.
8 Foll ow the se steps to powe r the CTR-115 wi th an AC adapt er. 1. Set the ad apte r ’s vol t age switc h to 3V . 2. Inser t th e adapte r ’s 2.35 mm out er diamet er/0. 7 mm inner diamet er bar rel plug i nto the adapter ’s c or d, with the tip set to p os iti v e.
9 • Be sure you pl ug the ada pter i nto the CTR-1 15 before you plug i t into the c igarette - light er socket , and tha t you unplug the ada pter f rom th e cigar ette-l ighter socket befo re you unplug i t fr om the CTR- 1 15. Follo w these s teps to power t he CTR-115 fro m your vehi cle’ s cigar ette- lighter socket .
10 CONNECTING THE EARPHONE You can use the su pplied ear phone t o li sten pri vatel y to r ecord- ed sound or to monit or reco rding. You c an also connec t an ex- ter nal or pill ow-t ype speaker (not suppl i ed) to this j ack. Note: Your local RadioShac k store sell s a wide variet y of speake rs.
11 • Do not increase the vol ume once yo u h ave establi shed a comfort able list ening l evel. Over tim e, your ears adapt to the vol ume level, so a volume l evel tha t does not ca use discomf ort might st ill damag e your hearing. 12 P LAY ING A CASSET TE T APE 1. Gentl y pull ope n the casset te com partment door . 2. Use your f inger or a penci l to tur n the cassett e’s hub and tak e up any slack i n the t ape.
13 Note: This switch ’s setting has n o ef fect when recor ding (see “ Recordi ng” o n Page 17) . 5. Rota te V OLUM E/VOX SENS counter clock wise to it s lowes t setti ng. 6. Pr ess PL A Y . The tape begi ns to play . 7. Adjust VOLUME/VO X SENS to a comfortabl e listeni ng level .
14 8. Set VOX/TONE to HIGH t o emphasi ze tre ble soun ds, or to LOW t o reduce the m . W i th metal/Hi gh-Bi as tape, use LOW for a m ore na tural s ound. 9. The CTR-1 15 autom aticall y sto ps at t he end of the tape. Or , press STOP to stop t he ta pe.
15 • T o rapidl y advance or rewind th e tape, press F A ST-F / CUE or REWIND /REV . The butt on lo cks down and the tape cont inues movi ng until you pre ss ST OP .
16 USING THE T A PE COUNTER You can use the tape cou nt e r to give you an i ndicat ion of the tape’s posi tion. Before playi ng a tape, press the tape counte r reset butto n to s et th e c o unt er to 000 .
17 RECORDIN G Note: For the be st perfor mance, us e only regul ar lengt h ( 60- o r 90-minut e) ca ssette tapes. We do no t r ecommen d long-pl aying casset te tapes, such as C-1 20s, becaus e they are extremel y thin and ca n tangle easily.
18 VOX RECORDING When yo u select VO X recor ding, the CTR-115 automat ically begin s recordi ng when it recei ves a sound si gnal from a voic e or othe r sound, and aut om at ical ly stops when the sound stop s. For t he best r ecordi ng qualit y, pla ce the r ecorder about 1 foot fro m the so und source.
19 4. Set VOX/ T ONE to IN . 5. Set VOLUM E/VOX SEN S to the desired se tti ng ( 0 – 10 ) to c o n- trol how loud a sound i s requir ed to t urn on t he recor ding funct ion. At 10 , a sof t sound tur ns on the r ecorder . At settin gs close r to 0 , it tak es a louder sound to st art recor ding.

21 CUE MARKER To mark the b eginni ng of a reco rding, pr ess CUE MARKER for about 3 seco nds durin g the recor ding. This reco rds a brief t one on the tape. When you pre ss F AST- F/CUE or REW IND/REV while t he tape plays, y ou hear the t one when the tape reac hes the po int you m arked.
22 RECORDING FROM EXTERNAL SOURCES You can record d i rectly from a tuner , a radio, or a TV that h as a 1 / 8 - inch (3.5- mm) jack. Use a dubbing pat ch cord such as Ra- dioSha ck Cat. No. 42-2152 t o connec t the CTR-115’s MI C jac k to t he headphon e output ja ck of an extern al componen t.
23 T APE T IPS ERASING A RECORDING If yo u want t o erase an enti re cas - sette o r a portio n of a reco rding, i n- sert the supp lied e rase plug i nto t he MIC jac k. Then se t VOX/ T ONE to OUT an d reco rd silence o ver the previ ous recor din g.
24 If y ou later deci de to r ecord on a t ape side af ter you have re- mov ed its erase- prote ction tab, place a piece of stro ng plast ic tape o ver tha t side ’s erase- protect ion ho le. Be sure you cover only the hole o rigi nally c overed by the er ase-pr otect ion tab.
25 CARE AND MAINTENANC E To enjoy your CTR-115 for a long time: • Keep the CTR-1 15 dry . If it gets wet , wipe it dry immedi - ately . • Use and sto r e the CTR-1 1 5 only in no rmal tem perature envir onments. • Handle the CTR- 1 15 gent ly a nd care fully .
