3 Built-In Ba ttery C harger — r echarges special rechargeabl e nickel- cadmium batteries inside the player when you use an AC or DC adap ter. 1-Bit DAC — u ses t he latest in digital-to-analog conv ersion circuitr y to accurately reproduce all sound level s with virtually no distortion.
4 Important: You ne ed a pair of stereo headpho nes, amplified speak ers, or a home audio or aut osound s ystem to use your CD pl ayer. Your local Ra- dioShack store carries a comple te line of headphones , spea kers, and au- dio systems.

8 POWERING THE CD PLAYER You can pow er your CD player fr om an y of thes e sourc es: • two AA alkaline bat teries • two special rechargeable AA nick el-cadmium batteries • two standard recharge.
9 Y ou cannot ch arge standard ni ckel-cadmium recha rgeable batteries inside the CD player ’s battery compartment , but you can charge them using an ex ternal battery charger s uch as Ca t. No. 23-133 (not sup- plied). Note: All types of nickel-cadm ium batte r i es come fully discha rged.
10 2. Place two AA bat teries in the compartment and on t op of the attached ribbon, as indicated b y the p olarity sym bols ( + and – ) m arked inside. 3. Close th e cover . When flashes, the s ound distorts, or the v o lume weakens , replace or recha r ge the batteries.
11 To charge s pecial nickel-cadm ium bat teries in the CD player, simply con- nect an AC or DC adapter to your CD pl a yer (see “Using AC Po wer” on Page 12 o r “Using Vehicle Battery Power” on Page 14). 13 Follow these steps to connect an AC adapter to the CD pla yer. 1. Plug the A C adapter ’s 5. 5 m m ou ter diamet er/2.1 m m in ner di ame ter barrel plug into the cable so it reads + T IP . 2. Set the AC adapte r ’s voltage switch to 4.5V . 3. Connec t the AC adapter ’s ba r rel plug to the 4.
14 Usin g V ehi cle Batter y Pow er You can p ower your CD pl ayer from your v ehicle’s cigarette-lighter socket using an optional 4.5 volt DC adapter, such as Cat. No. 273-1801. Cautio n s: • Y ou m ust use a DC ada pter that supplies 4 .5 volts and de livers at least 550 mA of autom otive power .
15 2. Set the DC adapter ’s voltage switch to 4.5 volts. 3. Connec t t he DC adapter ’ s barrel plug t o the 4.5V jack on the ba ck of the CD player .
16 CONNECTIONS You can listen to your CD player by connect ing optional stereo head- phones or amplified speakers to t he CD player’s PHONES jack, or by con- necting a home audio or autosound system to the CD player’s LINE OUT jack.
17 Listen ing Safely To protec t your h earing, follow t hese guidel ines when you use e arphones or headphones . • Set t he volume to the lowest set ti n g before you begin listening. A fter you begin l istening, ad just the v olum e to a comfortabl e level.
18 CONNECTING AMPLIFIED SPEAKERS You can listen to your CD player through optional ampl if i ed speakers (such as Cat. No. 40-138 7). P lug the speaker cable’s 1 / 8 -inch (3.
19 CONNECTING TO AN AUTOSOUND SYSTEM You can listen to your CD player through you r autoso und system in one of the following ways: • I f yo ur autosound syst em has LINE IN jacks, connect the supp lied Y- cable’s 1 / 8 -inch (3.5-mm ) plug to t he CD p layer ’s LINE OUT jack.
20 • If your autosound system has a cassette deck, connect an optional CD-to-cassette adapter ’s plug (such as Cat. No . 12-1951) to t h e CD player ’ s PHONES jack. Then insert the adapte r’s other end into your cassette d eck just like a standard cas s ette.
21 OPERATION LOADI NG A CD Caution: To help prevent dust from entering the CD play er, alwa y s keep the CD compartm ent cover closed except to load or unl o ad CDs. 1. Slide HOLD in the direction o f the arrow marked n ext to HOLD . 2. Press PUSH OPEN and lift the CD c ompartment cover .
22 PLAYIN G A CD Warning: To protect your hearing if you are using earph ones or head- phones, set VOLUME to its lowest setting before you play a CD. Pr e ss PLA Y/P AUSE . T he CD player automatical ly turns on and 00 , th e to tal number of t r acks o n t he CD, and t he CD’ s pla ying t ime brie fl y a p - pear on the d isplay .
23 To temporarily stop play, press PLA Y/P AUSE . The current track’s elapsed time flashes. To resum e play, press PL A Y/P AUSE again. W hen the la st t rack finishes p laying, the CD st op s and 00 appears f o r a few seconds. Then the CD player automatically turns off .
24 DIGITA L ANTI-SHOCK SYSTEM Your CD player contains s pecial circuits to overcome so und skipping problems caused by s hock or vibra ti on. This means you can carry the CD player anywhe r e you go or use it in your vehicle . When you turn on the anti-shock system, the C D player continuou s ly saves 10 seconds of mu- sic in memory .
25 Note: T he CD pla yer consum es ext ra battery pow er when you use the anti-shock sy stem. When you use t he CD player in a stable l ocation, re- peated ly press DAS until the icon d isappears to conserve battery power.
26 During play, pres s to return to the beginn ing of the current track. Press twice to ret urn t o the begi nning of the pre vious track, then re- peatedly press to move through the previ ous tracks or to move through the next tracks. To m ove to the beginning of the n ex t track, press .
27 To beg in scanni ng, press PLA Y MODE . Intr appears . Th en press PLA Y/ PA U S E . T he first track numbe r and --:0 0 appear and int r o scan starts from the f irst track on the CD. To return to no rmal play, press PLA Y/P AUSE . The current track’s elapsed time appe ars.
28 To repeat al l tracks on a CD, repea tedly press REPEA T/ENTER unt il RE- PEAT appears. The CD player continuously replays the CD. To cancel repeat play, press REPEA T/ENTER un til RE PEAT disappears. RANDOM PL AY In random pl ay, the CD player plays all the t r a cks once in r a ndom order, then automa tically stops.
29 PROGRAMMED PLAY You can program up to 2 2 track s on a CD to play in any ord er you choo se, and you can program the same track to play more than once. Follo w these steps to program and play a sequence. 1. Press PLA Y/P AUSE to t urn on the CD p layer .
