1 About This Book This handbook is designed to help you get up and r unning quickly on your Palm™ T ungsten™ W handheld. It describes all you need to know about how to use your handheld and the applic ations that come with it.

It also has a n indicator showing your GPRS coverage. If you ar e having problems with your wir eless cove rage , see “W irel ess pr oblems” in Appendix B .

Using the k eyboard 23 Using men u comman ds By using the menu commands you can access many functi ons dir ectly fr om the keyboar d without tapping. Most menu comm ands have an e quivalent Command str oke, which is si milar to the keyboar d shortcuts used to exec ute commands on computers.

ShortCuts ar e similar to the G lossary or Autotext feat ures of some wor d pr ocessors. The handheld comes with sev eral prede fined ShortCuts, and you can al so cr eate your own.
Using elemen ts of the handheld int erface 25 Check box When a checkmark appears i n a check box, the corr esponding option is active. T o insert or remove a check mark: ■ If a check box i s empty , tapping it inserts a checkmark. ■ If a check box i s selected, tapping it r emoves the checkmark.

Online tips anticipate questions you have in a dialog box, pr ovide shortcuts for using the dialog box, or give you other useful informat ion.
Beaming da ta 27 Y ou can beam the following informa tion between devices with an IR port: ■ The r ecord c urr ently displayed i n Date Book, Addr ess Book, T o Do List, or Memo Pad ■ All r ecor d.

TIP Y ou can also press and hold the Address Book application button to instantly beam your business card to another device with an IR por t .

Pe rforming commo n tasks 49 Looking up A ddres s Boo k rec ords In Addr ess Book, you c an use the Look Up line with the st ylus or the navi gator to look up and quickly scr oll to any of your Addre ss Book entries. T o look up an Address Book reco rd with the stylus: 1.

Pr ess Up or Down on the navigator to select the next letter of the name you want to find. The list then scr olls t o the first entry that starts with those two letters.
Pe rforming commo n tasks 51 As your handheld se ar ches for the text, you can tap Stop at any t ime. Y ou may want to do this if the entry you want appears before your handheld finishes the sear ch. T o continue the sear ch after you tap Stop, tap Find Mor e.
Chapter 4 W orking with Applicat ions 52 Looking up n ames to ad d to Expen se re cords In Expense, Lookup displays the names i n your Address Book that have data in the Company fie ld. Y ou can add these names to a list of attendees a ssociated with a n Expense r ecord .
Pe rforming commo n tasks 53 Sorting lists of records Y ou can sort lists of r ecords in various ways, depending on the applicati on. Sorting is availab le in applicati ons that have list scr eens: Address Book, Note Pad, T o Do List, Memo Pad, and Expense.

Chapter 4 W orking with Applicat ions 60 6. Select the Add-on folder . If the file you want to install is not listed in the dialog box, go to the fol der to which you copied the file. Most Palm appli cation files have the extension PRC, PDB, PQA, or SCP .

63 CHAPT ER 5 Using Address Book Addr ess Book enables you to kee p names, addr esses, phone numbers, and other information about your personal or business contacts. Use Addr ess Book to do the following: ■ Quickly look up or enter names, addr esses, phone numbers, and other infor ma tion .

Y ou can create entries on your handheld, or you can use Palm™ Deskt op softwar e to cr eate entries on your computer and then transfer the entries to your handheld with your ne xt HotSync ® operation.

79 CHAPT ER 8 Using Date Book Date Book enables you to quickly and easily schedul e appointments or any kind of activ ity associated with a time and date. Use Date Book to do the following: ■ Enter a description of y our appointment and assign it to a specific t ime and date.

Do one of the following: – T ap the time columns on the right side of the Set T ime di alog to set the Start T ime, and then tap the End T ime box and tap the time columns to set the End Ti m e . – T ap All Day to automatically insert the start and end tim e of the event as defined in your Da te Book pref er ences.

S c heduling repeatin g or continuous events 85 Scheduling re peating or continuous events The Repeat function lets you sc hedule events that r ecur at regular interv als or extend over a period of conse cutive days. A birthday is a good example of a n event that r epeats annually .
