4821-A2-GN21-10 July 2004 1-1 1 Installation Overview The BitStorm ® 48 00 Express is a stackable IP DSLAM designed for installation in a Central Office (CO), m ult i-tenant unit (MTU), or multi-dwelling unit (MDU) environment. The BitStorm 4800 Express is interoperab le with the Hotwire 6381 ADSL/R modem, as well as any standard ADSL CPE.

These are not includ ed. Use at a minimum 1/ 4-inch (6 mm) diameter scre ws in 3/4-inch (19 mm ) plywood (not dr ywall).

4821-A2-GN21-10 July 2004 2-1 2 Cabling Cabling Over view The BitStorm 4800 Express has a large v ariety of possible cab ling configurations. This chapter describes all possib le connections , not all.
2. Cabling 2-2 July 2004 4821-A2-GN21-10 DSL P orts The BitStorm 4800 Express DSL connect or supports the tip and ring connections of up to 24 DSL ports ov er a 50-position cab le. There are tw o DSL connectors on the 48-por t model. Y ou must connect the unit to a separate PO TS splitter .
2. Cabling 4821-A2-GN21-10 July 2004 2-3 6. Secure the cab les as required f or strain relief . 10/100BaseT Uplink (P ort 2) P or t 2 is the uplink f or the DSLAM. A straight- through cabl e can be used regardless of the destination inte rf ace, since t he por t automatically distinguishes between an MDI and an MDIX.
2. Cabling 2-4 July 2004 4821-A2-GN21-10 Management P ort P or t 1 can be used to connect the BitStorm 4800 Express to a net work management system using a 10BaseT or 100B aseT LAN. A straigh t-through cab le can be used regar dless of the destina tion interface, since the por t auto matically distinguishes be tween an MDI and an MDIX.
2. Cabling 4821-A2-GN21-10 July 2004 2-5 Console P ort The CONSOLE p or t n or mally ser ves as the prima r y user in terface with the BitStorm 4800 Express during installation. Y ou can co nnect a terminal or PC directly to the CONSOLE port using a DTE cable (see procedure be low).

2. Cabling 4821-A2-GN21-10 July 2004 2-7 Gr ound Procedur e T o connect the u nit to a ground : 1. Crimp a ring ter minal onto the stripped end of 14 A WG or hea vier copper ground wire . 2. Remov e the screw marke d by the g round symbol ( ) at the right side of the front panel.
2. Cabling 2-8 July 2004 4821-A2-GN21-10 Connecting to P ower The BitStorm 4800 Express can be pow ered by any A C power source supplying 90–265 V AC at 47– 63 Hz. Procedur e T o connect the BitStorm 4800 Express to a pow er source: 1. Inser t the supplied po wer cord into the power sock et on the bac k of the unit.

3. LEDs 3-2 July 2004 4821-A2-GN21-10 LED Meanings When power is first applied to the unit, it performs a power-on self-te st. When this test is successfully complet ed, the Status LED b links. The meaning of all the LEDs is shown in T ab le 3-1, F ront P anel LEDs .
4821-A2-GN21-10 July 2004 4-1 4 Conf iguration Overview The BitStorm 4800 Express is designed to require minimal config uration bef ore it can be accessed b y a Network Opera tions Center (NOC). When the BitStorm 4800 Express is first pow ered up it is a fully functional bridge, an d all DSL por ts are set to their maxim um speed.
4. Configuration 4-2 July 2004 4821-A2-GN21-10 Using the CLI A command line interf ace (CLI) can be used to con figure and monitor the unit. The CLI is a vailab le from a PC or terminal connected to the Console por t, or from a T elnet session with the de vice.
