Thank you for purchasing t his PENTAX Digital Camera. This is the manual for “PENTAX PHO TO Browser 3” and “PENTAX PHOTO Laboratory 3” software for your Windows P C or Maci ntosh for enjoying images created with your camera.

2 M F AF Enjoying Your Digital Ca mera Pictures You can use a computer to organize and edit the pictures captured with your digital camera. You can transfer your images using a built-in card sl ot + PC card adapter or a card reader. • Remo ve th e card from the camera.
3 You can use your e-m ail software to attach and send im ages by e-mail, or post the images on your website. Use your image data • See the operating manual of your e-mail soft ware f or d etails on how to make attachments to e-mails. • See the operating manual of the software you are using for details on how to use images on your website.
4 Provided Software The provided CD-ROM (S-SW84) cont ains the follow ing software: • PENTAX PHOTO Brow ser 3 • PENTAX PHOTO Laboratory 3 PENTA X PHOT O Bro wser 3 (9 languages: English, Fr ench, .
5 PENTA X PHOTO Labora tory 3 (9 languages: English, Fr ench, German, Spani sh, Italian, Russian, Chinese [tradi tional and simpl ified], Korean, Japanese) This application supports a num ber of image.
6 Macintosh w ith Mac OS X 10. 3 or later pr einstalled (USB 2.0 port must be standard equipment) * Your camera can be connected to your computer with a USB cable to transfer ima ges with Mac OS X 10.2. However, PENT AX PHOTO Browser 3 and PENTAX PHOTO Laborato ry 3 are not available.
7 Installing the Software Here is t he procedure f or installing PENTAX PH OTO Browser 3 and PENTAX PHOT O Laboratory 3. PENTAX PHOT O Browser and PENTAX PHOTO Laboratory can overwrite earl ier versions of this software.
8 4 Click [PENTAX Digital Cam era Utility]. 5 Select the desired language in the Select Language screen and click [OK]. 6 The installer starts. C lick [Next]. Follow the instructions on the sc reen and continue wit h the install ation. Some operating environments select the language automatic ally.
9 To better serve you, plea se take a moment to register yo ur software. Please click [Product R egistration] on the software selection screen in step 4 ( p.
10 4 Double-click the [PENTAX Inst alle r] ic on. The PENTAX Software Installer screen appears. 5 You can choos e the language from the displayed screen. The software selection screen appears. 6 Click [P ENTAX Digit al Camera Util ity]. Follow the instructions on the sc reen and continue wit h the install ation.
11 Saving Images on Your Computer Here is the procedure for saving images capt ured with your digital camer a onto your computer. This section describes the method for saving images by connecting your camera and computer with the USB cable, as well as other methods.
12 6 Press the 4 button on the camera. 1 Turn your computer on. 2 Turn off your camera and use the USB cable to connect your camera and your computer. Confirm that an SD Memory Card i s inserted into your camera. 3 Turn your camera on. The camera is recognized as a [R emovable Disk] in [My Computer].
13 Windows XP i s used as an example here. 1 Click [My Computer ] from the start menu. 2 Double-click the [Removable Disk] icon. 3 Double-click the [DCIM] icon. The [xxxPENTX] (xxx is a three-digit number) folder appears. The camera image files are in this folder.
14 Windows XP i s used as an example here. 1 Double-click the [Safely Remove Hardware] i con in the task ba r. The [Safely Remove Hardware] screen appears. 2 Confirm that [USB Mass Storage Device] i s selected and then click [Stop]. The [Stop a Hardware device] screen appears.
15 Refer to p.11 for settings procedures. 1 Turn on your Macintosh. 2 Turn off your camera and use the USB cable to connect your camera and your Macintosh.
16 Mac OS X (ver. 10.3) is used as an example here. 1 Double-click the [NO NAME] icon on the desktop. 2 Double-click the [DCIM] icon. The [xxxPENTX] (xxx is a three-digit number) folder appears. The camera image files are in this folder. 3 Double-click the [Macintosh HD] icon on the desktop.
17 4 Drag th e [xxxPENTX] or [xxx _MMD ] fold er to [Macintosh HD] volume or any other volume or folder. The com plete folder, contai ning all images, is saved to the de stination volume or folder. 1 Drag [NO_N AME] (or the volume la bel name on th e SD Memory Card) on the desktop to the trash can .
18 PENTAX PHOTO Brow ser 3 This section de scribes opening and closing PENTA X PH OTO B rowser 3 an d viewing the PE NTAX PHOT O Brows er window, and e xplains its functions. 1 Select the start m enu on the desktop. 2 Select [All Programs] - [PEN TAX Digita l Camera Uti lity] - [PENTAX P HOTO Browser ].
19 This section explains the PENTAX PHOTO Browser window layout, names and functions. Menu bar (p.23) Tool bar (p.27) Address bar The addre ss of the currently displayed folder a ppears here. Folde r tree pane Internal data on your comput er appear here a s a folder t ree.
20 Thumbnail pane Files in the folder selected in the Folder tree pane appear here. Select from five file display methods. When a thumbnail image is selected in the Thumbnail p ane, the image appe ars in the P review pane and the image data appear in the Image data pane.
21 *2: The range of t he variable appears after t he name of the item, suc h as [Saturation], set during shooting. *3: Information on the camera firmware appears f or captured images.
22 Show/hide pa nes and bars using the [View] m enu (p.24). A check is displayed in the box ( ) in front of the item for currently showing items. Check these t o show and u ncheck to hide. Alternatively, cl ick the [Close] button ( ) on the t op right of each pan e to close.
23 The Folder tree pane, Preview pane, Image data pane and Checked images pane ca n be remo ved from the Browser screen. Remove panes To remove a pane, double-click the top edge of the pane in the Browser screen. Alternativel y, click the top edge of t he pane and drag to the Thumbnail p ane.
24 Rename All This changes the names of all selected files. (p. 50) Page Setup This sets printing opt ions such as margins, headers/ footers, and number of copies. (p. 61) Print This prints the selected image f ile. (p.57) Properties The properties of t he selected file or fold er appear.
25 Filter This sets the type of file that appears in t he Thumbnail pane. Select from the following four it ems: PENTAX Images : Images captured with your PENTAX camera Other Images : Images other tha.

27 Frequently u sed functions are pr ovided as To ol bar button s. You can execute these functions easily from the Tool bar. If, after resizing the Browser screen, par t of the Tool bar is no t visible, you can click the downward pointing arrow on the right edge of the Tool bar to select a tool that is not displayed.
28 7 Cut This prepares the s elected file or folder t o be moved to a different location. (p. 47) 8 Copy This copies the selected file or f older. (p.47) 9 Paste This copies the cut or copied file or folder into the selected folder. (p.47) 10 Delet e This deletes the selected file or f older.
29 17 Thumbnail (Large) A large size thumbnail appears in the Thumbnail pane. (p.31) 18 Details Image details appear in the T humbnail pane without an image. 19 Default Position This returns the window layout of PENTAX PHOTO Browser 3 t o the default settings.
30 This function automatically searches for DCF images recorded in the camera or SD Memory C ard connected t o the computer and transfers the images to the computer. 1 Check that the digital camera, SD Me mory Card reader or DCF-compat ible removable disk is connected to your computer, and then select [Easy Image Transfer] on the [Tool] menu.
31 Display the images saved on your computer in the Preview pane or Main image view window. 1 In the folder tree, select the folder containing the image file to vi ew. Images in the sele cted folder appear a s thumbnails in the T humbnail pane. 2 Select an image in the Thumbnail pane.
32 Follow the steps below to open the Main image view window. 1 Select an image in the Thumbnail pane of the Browse r screen and click the i con on the Tool bar.
33 Each image thumbnail displayed in the Thumbnail pane (in the left column of the list of thumbnails when [Details] is selected) shows a Check box indicating whether an image is registered to the Checked images pane. When this box is clicked to display a check mark, that image be comes a “checked imag e”.
34 *1: This can only be selected f rom the right-click menu after selecting an image. *2: When [Details] is selected, the checked images are sorted by folder and displayed in a list. 1 Select an image i n the Thumbnail pane or Che cked images pane. 2 Select [Rotate] from the [Tool] menu.
35 Menu bar This executes f unctions or sets va rious settings of the Main im age view window. Main Image View Window [File] menu View Browser This shows t he file browsing screen.

38 4 Print This prints the current image. (p.57) 5 Properties This shows selected f ile properties. (p.41) 6 Previous Image This dis plays the pr evious image when multi ple images are displa yed in the Main image view window or when a fol der contains mult iple images.
39 Image view area The image selected in the Thumbnail pane or Checked images pane of PENTAX PHOT O Browser window appears. Imag e dat a pane The image data appear for the image appearing in the image view area. (p.20) Place the cur sor over a cell dividing line at the top of the pane and drag it to resize the cell.
40 You can set whether to show or hide the Tool bar and Image data pane in the Main image view window. 1 Select [Tool Bar] or [Image Data] from the [View] menu in the Main image view window and uncheck the item. The Tool bar or Image data pane is hidden.
41 Enlarged view Reduced view You can display file data for the image file appearing in the Main image view window . (p.53) You can al so enla rge or redu ce the view by directl y inputt ing the nu merical value of the magnif ication in the View Magn ificat ion box on the Tool bar.
42 Synchronizes up to four Main image view windows. Synchronizes zoom, position and frame advance operations. 1 Select [Synchronous Display] from the [View] m enu in the Mai n imag e view wind ows.
43 Data of the displayed image are rotated 90° left or right and saved. Rotation of the image may take time depending on the size of the image. A warning message appears when closing the Main image view window without saving the image or when clicking .
44 You can cut (crop) portion s of an image displayed in the Main image view window. 1 Select [Crop] from the [Tool] menu in the Main image view window. Alternatively, click th e icon on the Tool bar. The [Crop] dialog appears. 2 Set the cropping area.
45 You can save t he displayed image using a ny of the following file formats. RAW files can be saved with any of these formats to view the im age with image processing software.
46 1 Select an image for JPEG extra ction in the Thumbnail pane or Checked images pane of PENTAX PHOTO Browser window. 2 Select [Extract JPEG] from the [Tool] m enu. Alternati vely, right-clic k the image for JPEG extra ction and select [Extract J PEG].
47 2 Sele ct [S ave as D NG] f rom the [ Too l] me nu. Alternati vely, right- click th e PENTAX R AW ima ge to be converted to a DNG RAW file and select [Save as DNG]. 3 Specify the save desti nation and file name. 1 In the Thumbnail pane of the PENTAX PHOTO Browser window, select the thumbnail image to move or copy.
48 3 Specify the dest ination folder for mov ing or copying in the Folder tree pane. 4 Sele ct [Paste] from the [Edi t] menu. Alternatively, click the icon on the Tool bar. The image file is moved or c opied to the specified folder. • You can also move an image by dragging and dropping a thumbnail image to the destination folder.
49 1 In the Thumbnail pane of the PENTAX PHOTO Browser window, select the file or folder to delet e. Alternati vely, select the folder to delete in the Folder tree pane. 2 Select [Delete] f rom the [Edit] menu. Alternatively, click the i con on the Tool bar.
50 2 Select [Renam e] from the [File] me nu. Alternati vely, direct ly click the file or folde r name i n the Thumbnail pane or Folder tree pane. The file or folder nam e is ready to be changed. 3 Input the file or folder name. The image file or folder is renamed.
51 3 Confirm the content, a nd input information as needed. 4 Click [OK ]. All files are renamed to the specified name. 1 In the Folder tree pane of the PENTAX PHOTO B rowser window, select the folder to create a new folder in. Alternatively, select the Thumbnail pane.
52 • When saving image data from the Thumbnail pane, the image files in the current folder di splayed in the pane can be saved (selectable). • When saving image d ata from the Checked i mages pane, the im ages in the active t ab displayed in the pane can be saved.
53 1 In the Thumbnail pane of the PENTAX PHOTO Browser window, select the thumbnail image for which properties are to be shown. Alternati vely, in the Fol der tree pane, select the folder for which properties are to be shown. 2 Sele ct [Propert ies] from th e [File] menu .
54 This section explains how to set up and operate the slideshow. 1 Select an i mage or folder in the PENTAX PHOTO Brows er window. 2 Select [Slideshow] from the [View] menu or click the icon on the Tool bar. The Slideshow screen and Slideshow control panel open.
55 3 Press the [Play] button. The slideshow starts. When viewing the slideshow, select between a single window and a dual window. Additionally, view the slideshow in single full screen or dual full screen mode (o nly if the computer is compatible with dual screen display).
56 Select from one of the four display patterns below. Image display or der for dual window When using dual window or dual fu ll screen in PENTA X PHOTO Br owser 3 slideshow, you can select t he display method f or images to b e displayed on the primary and secondary monitors.
57 When printing i mage files, sel ect between [Print Index] and [ Print photo]. 1 In the Thumbnail pane of the PENTAX PHOTO Browser window, select the images to print. 2 Sele ct [Print] from the [Fil e] menu . Alternatively, click the icon on the Tool bar.
58 3 Select the [Pri nt Index] tab. 4 Make the l ayout and ca ption settings. Item Descr iption Preview This displays a preview using the s pecified settings. Layout Select from three lay out patterns. Number of images per page (W × H) From the list, specifies the number of images to print on one page.
59 5 Click [OK ]. Printing starts. 1 In the Thumbnail pane of the PENTAX PHOTO Browser window, select the images to print. 2 Sele ct [Print] from the [Fil e] menu . Alternatively, click the icon on the Tool bar. The [Print] dialog appears. 3 Select the [Print photo] tab.
60 4 Make the l ayout and ca ption settings. *1: When [Layout 1] (Normal printing) or [Layout 3] (Partition printing) is selec ted, the [Fit to pap er] checkbox is displayed. Check [Fit to paper] to ignore margin settings and print images to the maximum print area of the print er.
61 5 Click [OK ]. Printing starts. Use Page Setup to set printing options such as margi ns, headers/footers, and number of copies. 1 Select [Page S etup] from the [File] m enu in the PENTAX PHOTO Browser window. Alternati vely, click [Page S etup] on the [Print] di alog.
62 2 Make the settings. 3 Click [OK ]. The page setup information is set. Check the printer settings and change the settings as needed. 63 1 Click [P rinter Se ttings] on the [Print] or [Page Setup ] dialog. The [Print Setup] dialog appears. 2 Make the settings. 3 Click [OK ]. The printer setup information is set. Item Descr iption Printer Selects the printer to use from the [Name] list.
64 Here, you can set the PENTAX PHOTO Browser 3 settings, such as the program launch or exit settings, the initial image view size, thumbnail caption view ing, and RAW file view format. 1 Select [Opt ions] from the [Tool] menu in the PENTAX PHOTO Browser window.

70 PENTAX PHOTO Labo ratory 3 PENTAX PHOTO Laborat ory 3 supports a number of image processing functions for use with PEF and DNG files, in cluding data conversion, color adjustment, an d image compensatio n.
71 1 Double-click the [PENTA X Digital Camera Utili ty] folder in [Applications] on the ha rd disk. 2 Double-click the [PENTAX PHOTO Laboratory] program icon.
72 This section explains the PENTAX PHOTO Laboratory windo w layout, names, and functions. PENTAX PHOTO Laborat ory 3 is made up of seven panels. The control panels are in dependent and can be repositioned anyw here on the screen. Select [Arrange Wi ndows] from the [ View] menu t o align the panels.
73 Main panel This executes functions or sets various settings of PENTAX PH OTO Laboratory 3. For Macintosh, the Main panel only contains the Tool bar. The Menu bar appears at t he top of t he desktop. Preview pa nel You can preview adjust ments made for a selected RAW file in the panel s.
74 Save This performs RAW file data proc essing and saves it with the specified format. The available s ave formats are JPEG (5 compression rat es), TIFF-8, and TIFF- 16. Use [Save Mode] o n the [Tool] menu to spec ify the sav e forma t. (p.9 0) Recall Adjustment Use this function to load previously saved settings for the various panels.
75 Noise Reduction This shows or hides the Noise reduction panel. Lens aberration correction This shows or hides the Lens aberration correction panel. Arrange Windows This arranges the displayed panels to the default positions. [T ool ] me nu Undo When in Custom Processing mode, use t his function to cancel the previous operation.
76 This executes functions or sets various settings of PENTAX PH OTO Laboratory 3. Tool Bar Number Icon (button) Content 1 Open This selects the image file f or processing in PENTAX PHOTO Laboratory 3. Only applies when the software is started as standalone.
77 This shows a preview of the RAW file. 8 Image Tone This displays the current Image tone. Select an image tone appropriate for the subject or shooting scene by clicking in Custom Processing mode. This function is not available in Full Aut o Processing mode.
78 Number Icon (button) Content 1 Rotat e/Shif t Rotates the image based on the baseline or shifts it in a vert ical or horizontal direction. 2 Crop/ Resi ze Crops portions of an image and changes the image output size. 3 Enlarge Area When this is t urned on, a red frame appears in the preview area.
79 1 Select a RAW file in the PENTAX PHOTO Browser w indow. 2 Sele ct [PEN TAX PHOTO La borator y] on th e [Tool ] menu of PENTAX P HOTO Browser 3 or click the ic on. A RAW file appears in the Preview panel of the PENTAX PHOTO Laboratory window. Select multiple image fi les to open multiple images at the same t ime.
80 1 Click the icon in the PEN TAX PHOTO Labor atory window. The [Open] dialog appears. • To select multiple im age files, hold down the Ctrl key and click on thumbnail images in the Th umbnail pane or the Check ed images pane (For Macintosh, hold down the command key a nd click on im age files).
81 2 Select RAW fi les to display and click the [Open] button. Select imag es with holding down the Ctr l key (Windows) or com mand key (Macint osh) in the [Open ] dialog to open multi ple files s imultaneously . A RAW file appears in the Preview panel of the PENTAX PHOTO Laboratory window.
82 2 Set the cropping area and image output size on the Crop/ Resize pa nel. Cli ck [Rese t] to re turn th e set va lues to their in itial settin gs. Item Descr iptio n Cropping Aspect Ratio Maintain original aspect ratio: Maintains aspect ratio of original image.
83 3 Click [OK ]. The image is cropped. The cropping area remains on t he image in the preview panel, and the icon is selected. Aft er the image is processed, the cropping area is saved with the specified pixels. To cancel cropping, cli ck the icon agai n to undo the cropping area.
84 Set individual processing conditions to create unique image modification s. 1 Select [Custom Processing] from the [View] menu, or click on the icon on the Tool bar and then click (Custom Processing) on the drop-down list.
85 2 Enter settings in each se tting panel. The set tings are reflected in the Pre view pane l. Setting s can be ap plied in one of two methods, de termined by the setting in the [O ptions] dialo g. (p.99 ) • Reflect the settings immediately in real time.
86 Settin g the Tone curve/Histog ram Item Descrip tio n Tone curve Adjus ts the tone curve to make precise adjustments to the density and contrast. Change t he tone curve using the pointer. Move the curve up to brighten and move the curve down to darken the image.
87 Setting the Sensiti vity/Saturation/Hue/ Sharpness/Contrast/Filter Effect/Toni ng/Shadow Comp ensation Set these using the Other settings panel. Item Descrip tio n Sensitivity Adjus ts the sensitivity. + : The image becomes brighter. – : The image becomes darker.
88 Settin g the N oise R eduction Set using t he Noise reduction panel. Settin g the Len s Aber ration C orrecti on Set using the Lens aberration correction panel. Toning Sets the color tone of an image processed i n monochrome to a cold t one with a bluish hue or a w arm tone with a brow nish hue.
89 [Marginal lumination compensat ion] tab Adjusts marginal lumination of the image. [Distor tion Cor rectio n] tab Corrects distor tions (lens aberrat ion that photograp hs straight lines as curved lines).
90 You can save the image f iles which have been Full Aut o processed or Custom processed. Specify the save for mat and image size whe n saving image fi les. Save images i n JPEG format w ith one of five different compression rat es, or in T IFF-8 or TIFF -16 format.
91 2 Select [Sav e] from the [Fi le] menu or click the icon on the Tool bar. The [Save] dialog appears. 3 Specify the file name and save des tination, and then click [Save]. The image file is saved. All current adjustment combinat ions can be saved as a parameter file.
92 The [Save Adjustments] dialog appears. 2 Specify the file name and save des tination, and then click [Save]. The current set tings are save d as an adj ustment set ting file (*.ini). 1 Display a RAW fi le in the Preview panel . 2 Click [Reca ll Adjust ment] from t he [File] menu on the Main panel or click the icon.
93 You can pr int the currently di splayed RAW file. Print image f iles using [Print Bracketing] or [Enlarge image] . Set the print layout, captions, and other settings in the [Print] dialog. Opening the [Print ] dialog Select [Print] on the [File] menu to ope n the [Pri nt] dialog.
94 [Print B racketing] tab Print bracketing is a function that prints a n image several t imes on one page with automatically adjusted parameters wi thin a set parameter range, enabling you to view the printed results of different parameters at the same t ime.
95 Print Layou t Sets print b racketing settings. Item Descr iptio n Segment Specification Selects image area s etting method for print brac keting. Select from the following three settings. Segment original image : Divides entire image into equal sections and allocates bracketing variations for each section.
96 [Enlarge ima ge] tab Enlarge image ref ers to printing the ent ire image with the cur rent settings. After reviewing the par ameters with print bracketing, use this tab to make the settin gs for the actual print. Display M ode Sets preview method. Bracketing 1 steps Selects v ariable step of bracketing par ameter to be changed horizontally.
97 Page Setup Sets the pa per size, margins an d other settings. Item Descr iptio n Print Area Sets the paper size and margins. Standard size : Sets the paper size (Photo (89 × 127 mm)/ (3.5 × 5 in.), Postcard (102 × 152 m m)/(4 × 6 in.), Photo (127 × 178 mm)/(5 × 7 in.
98 Verify printer settings when necessary using the [Print Setup] dialog. Refer to the pr inter user’s manual for details o n printer settings. Using the [Pr int Setup] dialog Follow th e steps below to o pen the [P rint Setup] dialog . Click [Printer Settings] on the [Print] dialog.
