Thank you for buying the PENT AX Digital Camera. Please read this manual before usin g the camera in order to get the most out of all the features and functions. Keep this manual safe, as it can be a valuable tool in helping you to understand all the came ra's capabilities.
1 Sufficient attention has been paid to the safety of this product but ple ase pay particular attention to the warnings indicated by the following symbols during use. Warning • Do not at tempt to take the camera apart or remodel the camera. High voltages are present within the ca mera, and there is t herefore a danger of electric shocks.
2 Caution • Never tr y to disassemble or short the bat tery. Also, do not dispose of the battery in fire, as i t may explode. • Do not charge any batteries other th an rechargeable lithi um-ion battery D- LI8. The bat tery could explode or c atch fire.
3 • If li ghtning should be present during using, unplug the power cord and discontinue using. Continuing to use th e product can cause damage to the equipment, fire or elect rical shock. • Wipe of f the plug of the power cord if it shou ld become covered with dust.
4 • Take the i nternational warranty card wi th you when you travel abroad. Also take the Wo rldwide Service Network t hat is included in the package.
5 • If the camera is sub jected to rapi d temperature c hanges, condensat ion may form on the inside and out side of the camera. Therefore put the ca mera in a bag or plastic bag, a nd take the camera out when the dif ference in t emperature has subsided.

15 Getting Started 1 Use the battery charging stand D- BC25 supplie d with the camera to charge the battery before usin g the camera for the first time or when the [Battery depleted] message appears. You can charge th e battery without removing it from the camera.
16 Getting Started 1 You can remove the battery from the camera and charge it. 3 Place the battery in the bat tery charging stand so t hat the PENTAX name is visible. The BATTERY charging i ndicator on the stand lights red while the battery is being charged and goe s out when charging is completed .

18 Getting Started 1 • Recycling Batteries This symbol indica tes that the batte ry is recyclable. Cover the terminals with insu lating tape and take the battery to a store displaying this symbol.
19 Getting Started 1 If you intend to use the LCD monitor for a long time or connect the camera to a PC, use of the AC adapter D-AC8 (optional) is recommended.
20 Getting Started 1 4 Plug the AC plug co rd into the pow er outlet. To avoid the risk of fire or electric shock when using the b attery charging stand or AC adapter, be sure to read the section on “FOR SAFE USE OF YOUR CAMERA” on page 1. Refer to page 140 for the specifications of the battery charging st and and AC adapter.
21 1 Getting Started Installing the SD Memory Card An SD Memory Card can be used with th is camera. Capt ured images a re recorded on the SD Memory Card if a card is inserted ( appears on the LCD monitor) or in the built-in memo ry if no card is inserted ( appears on the LCD mo nitor).
22 Getting Started 1 Data Backup Very occasi onally, dat a stored in the built-in memory becomes u nreadable . As a backup measur e, we recommend that you dow nload import ant data to a P C or store the data in a medium othe r than the built-in memory.
23 Getting Started 1 Choose the image size and quality best suited to your purpose. Higher quality levels and numbers of re corded pixels produce clearer images for printing, but th e resulting incre ase in data volume reduces the total number of pictur es that can be taken.
24 Getting Started 1 Approximate Number of Recordable Imag es by Size and Quality • The above table indicates the approxima te number of imag es and recording time when using a 64MB SD Memory Card .
25 1 Getting Started Initial Settings If the Initial Settings screen or Date Adjust screen appears when you turn the camera on, follow the procedure below to set the display language and/or current date a nd time. If the Initial Settings screen appears: 1 p.

28 2 Quick Start Quick Start Taking Still Pictures The simplest procedure for taking still pictures is described below. T he flash fires automatically depe nding on the light conditions. 1 Press the power switch. The camera turns on. 2 Confirm the subject and sho oting information on the LCD monitor.
29 2 Quick Start The shutter relea se button works in a two-step action as follows. Press halfway The focus and exposure are locked when the shutter relea se button is pressed lightly (halfway). The shutter speed and aperture settings onl y appear on the LCD mo nitor when the shu tter release button is p ressed halfway.
30 2 Quick Start Quick Start Playing Back Still Pictures You can display the still picture you have just taken. 1 Press the Q Playback bu tton after taking a pict ure. The image appears on the LCD monitor. Still pictures can be playe d back one at a time, proceed ing either forward or backward.

32 3 Common Operations Common Operations Turning the Camera On and Off 1 Press the power switch. The power switch is illumi nated by a green light . The lens extends and the camera turns on in the Capture mode. The camera is ready to take pictu res by pressing the shut ter release button.

34 3 Common Operations Using the Button Functions QUICK button Switches to the Green mode, the easiest way to take pictures. ( 1 p.42) You can assign a different function to the QUICK button by selecting [QUICK Button] on the [ B Set-up] menu. ( 1 p.128) b button Changes the flash mode.

37 Common Operations 3 Shutter release button When pressed, starts recording, and when pressed again, stops r ecording. When pressed for more than one second, recordin g continues for as long as the button is held down and st ops w hen the button is released.
38 3 Common Operations Setting the Menus When you press the MENU button, the menus appear on the LCD monitor. You can set functions, save the setti ngs and change the camera settings on these men us. When you are making settings from a menu, a guide to operation appears on the LCD monitor.
39 Common Operations 3 Example of Menu Operation If you press the sh utter release butt on halfway to exit t he menu and switch to Ca pture mode, any chan ges you have made to the s ettings will not be saved.

42 4 Taking Pictures Taking Pictures Taking Pictures The Green mode lets you take pictur es quickl y and easily, simply by pressing the shutter release button. In Q (Green) mode, the camera automatically sets all th e functions, including the shutter speed and aperture.
43 Taking Pictures 4 In R (Program mode), the camera autom atically sets the shutter speed and aperture for taking sti ll pictures . However, you can sel ect other functions such as the Flash mode or Con tinuous Shooting mod e. 1 Press the four-way contr oller ( 3 ) in Capture mode.

48 Taking Pictures 4 If you keep the shutter release button pressed for more th an one second, pictures will be taken for as long as you keep the button pressed. Shooting stops when you take your finger off the shutter release button. Keeping the Shutter Release Button Pressed • The flash will not discharge in Movie mode.
49 Taking Pictures 4 You can take a numb er of images and join them together to form a panorama picture. The panorama softwa re supplied with the camera (ACDSee for PENTAX) and a comput er are necessary for joini ng the images.
50 Taking Pictures 4 5 Take the first image. Press the shutter rele ase button to take the first image. The right edge of the image appears in half-trans parent form on the left of the LCD monitor. 6 Move the camera to the right and take the second image.

52 Taking Pictures 4 The filters consist of color filt ers such as red, blue and green, a posterization filter that takes posteri zation-type pictures, and a slim filter that produces a slim effe ct. The Digital Filter mode enables you to take pictures using these filters.
53 Taking Pictures 4 Posterization is an effe ct that uses a limited range of color tones and enables you to take posterization-type pictures. 4 Use the four-way controller ( 23 ) to select (Posterization). 5 Press the OK button. 6 Press the shutter relea se button halfway.

57 Taking Pictures 4 You can take 3D pictu res and view them by the parallel method or cro ss method. The default setting is [Parallel]. If you print out 3D pictures for view ing by the parallel method and look at t hem through the optional 3D image viewer, the image will appear in three d imensions.

59 Taking Pictures 4 Viewing 3D Pictures by the Parallel Meth od and Cros s Method As our eyes are positioned about 6 cm or 7 cm apart, there is a very slight deviation between wha t we see with our right eye and wh at we see with our left eye. The difference is pr ocessed by our brain to produce a three-dimensional image.
60 Taking Pictures 4 How to View 3D Pictures Using the 3D Image Viewer Print out the pictures so that they are about 11 cm or 12 cm wide and place the divider of the 3D image viewer in the middle of the two.

64 Taking Pictures 4 You cannot only change the zoom m agnifi cation with the zoom button, but also shoot images with the shutte r button using the remote control unit E (optional). 1 Press the four-way contr oller ( 2 ) in Capture mode to displa y i or h on the LCD monitor.

The [ A Rec.Mode] menu appears. 2 Use the four-way controller ( 2 3 ) to select [Time-la pse Movie].
69 4 Taking Pictures Setting the Shooting Functions Capture mode is for taking pictures and Playback mode is for playing back or deleting i mages. • To change from Capture mode to Playback mode, press the Q Playback button. • To change from Playback mode to Capture mod e, press the Q Playback button or pre ss the shutter release button halfway.
70 Taking Pictures 4 1 Press the QUICK button. You can switch st raight to the Gree n mode from the Capture mode, Playback mode or menu screens. 1 Press the four-way contr oller ( 3 ) in Capture mode. The Mode Palette appears. 2 Use the four-way controller ( 2345 ) to c hoose the icon for the mode you want to set .
71 Taking Pictures 4 You can display shooting informa tion on the LCD monitor when ta king pictures. The displ ay mode can be changed by pressing the DISPL AY button.
72 Taking Pictures 4 Focus mode 1 Press the qsz butto n in Capture mode. The focus mode c hanges each ti me the button is pressed and t he icon appears on the LCD monitor.
73 Taking Pictures 4 When the mode is set to z (Manual Focus), the cen tral portion of the picture is enlarged to full screen on the LCD monitor for focus adjustment. Use the four-way controller ( 23 ) to adjust the focus while watching the indicator on the LCD monitor.

85 Taking Pictures 4 You can choose whether you want the image to have sharp or soft outlines. 1 Press the MENU button in Capture mode. The [ A Rec.Mode] menu appears. 2 Use the four-way controller ( 23 ) to select [Sha rpness]. 3 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to change the setting from [Normal] to [Hard (+)] or [Soft (–)].

87 Taking Pictures 4 You can set the image contrast. 1 Press the MENU button in Capture mode. The [ A Rec.Mode] menu appears. 2 Use the four-way cont roller ( 23 ) to select [Contras t]. 3 Use the four-way cont roller ( 45 ) to change the setting from [Normal] to [High (+)] or [Low (–)] .
88 Taking Pictures 4 You can adjust the overall br ightness of the picture. Use this function to take pictures that are intentionally overexp osed or underexposed. 1 Press the MENU button in Capture mode. The [ A Rec.Mode] menu appears. 2 Use the four-way controller ( 23 ) to select [EV Compensat ion].
89 4 Taking Pictures Saving the Settings You can choose whether you wan t the set values to be saved when the camera is turned off. If you select O (On), the settings will be saved in the status they were in immediately be fore the camera was turned off.

91 5 Recording and Play back Recording and Playback Recording Sound (Voice Recording Mode) You can record sound. The recordable time appears on the LCD monitor according to how much space is available on the SD Me mory Card. 1 Press the power switch fo r more than two seconds, or press the power switch while p ressing the DISPLAY button.
92 5 Recording and Play back Playing Back Sound You can play back the recording you made in Voice Recordi ng mode. 1 Press the Q Playback bu tton in the Voice Recording mode. 2 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to choose the recording to play back. 3 Press the four-way contr oller ( 2 ).
93 5 Recording and Play back Adding a Voice Memo You can add a voice memo to a captured image. 1 Enter the Playback mode and use the four-way controlle r ( 45 ) to choose the image t o which you want to add a voice memo. The voice memo s creen appears on the LCD monitor while the image is disp layed.
94 6 Playback/Deleting/Editin g Playback/Deleting/Editing Playing Back Images You can play back images recorded on the SD Memory Card when a card is inserted in the camera, or in the bui lt-in memory when no card is inserted. Press the Q Playback button.

You can display the image at maximum magnification simply by pressing the Zoom/ f / y button once d uring zoom playback. 1 Select [Quick Zoom] on the [ Q Playback] menu. 2 Use the four-way c ontroller ( 45 ) to select [O n] or [Off].
96 6 Playback/Deleting/Editin g You can play back movies. You can play back the recording you made in Voice Recording mod e at the same ti me. A guide to o peration appears on the LCD monitor during playback. Operation s include playback, frame by frame playback (forward or reverse), pause and volume adjustment.
97 6 Playback/Deleting/Editin g Shooting information can be d isplayed on the LCD monitor in Playba ck mode. Pressing the DISPLAY button changes the display mode.
98 6 Playback/Deleting/Editin g You can display n ine images at the same time. 1 Enter the Playback mode and use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to choose an image. 2 Press w / f on the Zoom/ f / y button. Nine images appear with the s elected image in the center.
