Getting started 7 Bat t ery installation & char ging Install the batt ery as shown on the next page. Once you ha ve installed the battery , the screen indicates the bat tery status (see table below). If necessary , place the handset in the telephone base or char ger to charge the batt ery.
Getting started 8 Bat t ery installation & char ging Step 3 Charge the handset by placing it f ace forward in the telephone base or char ger. The CHAR GE light is on when charging. IMPORT ANT INF ORMA TION 1. Use only the supplied rechar geable battery or replacement bat tery (model BT8001).
Getting started 9 Install ation options Y our telephone base is ready f or tabletop use. If y ou want to mount your telephone on a wall, use the pr ovided wall-mount bracket to c onnect with a standard dual-stud t elephone wall-mounting plate.
Getting started 10 Install ation options 3. Plug the telephone line cor d (or DSL filter) into the wall jack. Plug the power adapter into a power outlet not c ontrolled by a wall switch. 4. Align the holes on the wall-mount brack et with the standard wall plate and slide the wall-mount brack et down until it locks securely .
11 T elephone set tings MENU settings Use the menus to change the telephone’s set tings. 1. Press MENU/ SELE CT when in idle mode (when the phone is not in use) to enter the main menu. 2. Press q CID or DIR p to scr oll to the feature t o be changed.
12 Handset settings T elephone set tings Ringer tone Y ou can choose one of 10 ringer tones. 1. Press MENU/ SELE CT in idle mode to ent er the main menu. 2. Use q CID or DIR p to scroll t o >RINGER TONE , then press MENU /SELECT . 3. Press q CID or DIR p to sampl e each ringer tone.
13 Handset settings T elephone set tings If you subscribe to caller ID servic e, the day , month and time are set automatically with each inc oming call. Set date/time Follow the st eps below to set the month, day , year and time. 1. When the handset is in idle mode, press MENU/ SELE CT to enter the main menu.
14 Handset settings T elephone set tings V oicemail (visual message waiting) indicat or If you subscribe to a voic email service offer ed by your telephone service pr ovider , this featur e provides a visual indication when you have new voic email messages.
15 Handset settings T elephone set tings Home ar ea code If you dial seven digits to mak e a local call (no area code r equired), enter your area code int o the telephone as the home area code. When you r eceive a call from within your home ar ea code, the caller ID history only displays the sev en digits of the telephone number .
16 Making, answering, and ending calls Making a call T o make a call: Press PHONE/ FLASH or SPEAKER , then enter the telephone number . The screen display s the elapsed time as you talk (in hours, minutes and seconds). NOTE: Pressing PHONE/FLASH to access services from your telephone service pr ovider does not affect the elapsed time.
17 T elephone operation Handset oper ation Speak erphone During a call, press SPEAKER to swit ch between hands-free speakerphone and normal handset use. Pr ess OFF/CLEAR to hang up. NOTES: 1. If you use the speakerphone during L OW BA TTERY mode, the handset is not lit exc ept for the SPEAKER button.
18 T elephone operation Options while on calls V olume contr ol While on a call, press V OLUME-/ q CID to decr ease or press VOL UME+/DIR p to incr ease the listening volume. NOTES: 1. Handset and speakerphone volume settings ar e independent. 2. When the volume reaches the minimum or maximum set ting, you hear two beeps.
19 T elephone operation Options while on calls Chain dialing Use this feature t o initiate a dialing sequence from the numbers in the directory , caller ID history or r edial memory while you are on a call.
20 Multiple handset use Handset locat or The handset locator featur e is useful if you misplace any handset. T o start the paging tone: Press HANDSET L OCA TOR at the t elephone base to start the paging tone on all handsets for 60 sec onds.
21 Multiple handset use Int er com Use the interc om feature for conver sations between handsets. This featur e is not available for model CL81109 unl ess you have pur chased additional handsets (CL80109). Y ou can buy additional expansion handsets (model A T&T CL80109) for this telephone base.
22 Multiple handset use Int er com Answer an incoming call during an int erc om call If you rec eive an incoming outside call during an int ercom call, there is an alert tone. T o answer the call, press PHONE/ FLASH . The intercom call ends automatically .
23 Multiple handset use Call tr ansfer using int er com Use the interc om feature to trans fer an outside call to another system handset. This feat ure is not av ailable for model CL81109 unless you have pur chased additional handsets (CL80109). 1. During a call, press INT .
24 About the dir ect ory Shar ed directory The direct ory is in the telephone base and is common f or all handsets. Changes made to the dir ectory from an y handset apply to all. NOTE: Only one handset can review the directory at a time. If another handset tries to enter the directory , the screen shows NO T AV AILABLE A T THIS TIME .
25 Directory Cr eat e dir ectory entries T o crea te a new direct ory entry 1. Press MENU/ SELE CT in idle mode to ent er the main menu. 2. Press MENU /SELE CT again to enter >DIRECT ORY . 3. Press q CID or DIR p to highlight S TORE . 4. Press MENU /SELE CT .

27 Directory R eview dir ectory T o review dir ectory entries 1. Press DIR p when in idle mode t o show the first entry in the directory . DIRECT ORY EMPTY appears if there are no dir ectory entries. - OR- Y ou can also show the first entry in the directory by pr essing MENU/ SELECT when in idle mode, then press MENU /SELE CT twice.
28 Directory Sear ch dir ect ory T o search b y name 1. Press DIR p in idle mode t o show the first listing in the directory . DIRECT ORY EMPTY appears if there are no dir ectory entries. 2. When a name entry appears, press the dial pad k eys (2-9) to start a name search.
29 Directory T o dial, delet e or edit entries T o dial, delete or edit a direct ory entry (name and number), the entry must be shown on the handset. Use the directory r eview or search (pages 27-28) to show an entry . Display dial T o dial a displayed number from the dir ectory, pr ess PHONE/ FLASH or SPEAKER .
30 About caller ID This product supports caller ID servic es offered by most telephone service pr oviders. Depending on your service subscription, you might see the caller’s number , or the caller’s name and number from the t elephone company aft er the first or second ring.
31 Caller ID Caller ID hist ory How the caller ID his tory (call l og) works The telephone stor es caller ID information about the last 50 incoming calls in the telephone base. Entries ar e stored in reverse chr onological order . The phone deletes the oldest entry when the log is full to mak e room for new calls.
32 Caller ID Caller ID hist ory Memory match If the incoming telephone number e xactly matches a telephone number in your direct ory, the name that appears on the scr een matches the corr esponding name in your directory . For e xample, if Christine Smith calls, her name appears as Chris if this is how you enter ed it into your directory .
33 Caller ID Caller ID hist ory T o review the call er ID history 1. When a handset is in idle mode, press q CID t o review the caller ID history in reverse chr onological order starting with the most r ecent call.
34 Caller ID Caller ID hist ory Dial a call log entry 1. When in the call log, press q CID or DIR p t o browse. 2. Press PHONE/ FLASH or SPEAKER to dial the entry . Delet e entries Press MUTE /DELETE to del ete the shown entry from the caller ID history .
35 Caller ID R easons for missing caller ID in f ormation There ar e also occasions when other information or no information shows for various reasons: On-scr een message Reason PRIVATE NUMBER The caller prefers not t o show the phone number. PRIVATE NAME The caller prefers not t o show the name.
36 Alert t ones and lights Scr een icons Batt ery status - battery is char ging (animated display). Batt ery status - low batt ery (flashing); place handset in telephone base or charger t o recharge. SPEAKERPHONE - the speakerphone is in use. Ringer off - the handset ringer is off.
37 Handset display scr een messages Screen display messages ALREADY SAVED The telephone number you have ent ered is already in the directory . CALL LOG EMPTY You ar e trying to reach an empty caller ID history . CALL TRANSFERED Y ou are trans ferring an outside call from one handset t o another handset.
38 Appendix B LOW BATTERY Y ou should charge the battery . MICROPHONE ON Mute is off so the other party can hear your voice. XX MISSED CALLS Ther e are new calls in the caller ID history . MUTED The microphone is off . NEW VOICEMAIL There are new v oicemail messages.
39 Expansion handset Y our new AT&T CL81109/CL81209/CL81219/CL81309 t elephone system can accommodate up t o 12 handsets. Y ou can add new handsets (A T&T CL80109, available separ ately) t o your telephone s ystem, you must r egister each device with the telephone base bef ore use.
40 Appendix C Expansion handset Adding and r egistering handsets (optional) Handsets purchased separ ately (A T&T CL80109) need to be register ed to the telephone base befor e use. When first purchased, all e xpansion handsets show NO T REGISTERED on the screen.
41 Appendix C Expansion handset Der egistering a handset Y ou can deregister handsets. Y ou may need to der egister your handsets if: Y ou have twelve regist ered handsets and need to replac e a handset. -OR- Y ou wish to change the designated handset number of your r egister ed handsets.
42 T r oubleshooting If you have difficulty with y our phone, please try the suggestions below . For Customer Service, visit our websit e at www .tel ephones.att.c om or call 1 (800) 222-3111 . In Canada, dial 1 (866) 288-4268 . My phone doesn’t work at all.
43 Appendix D T r oubleshooting I cannot dial out. First try all the suggestions above. Make sur e you have a dial tone befor e dialing. The cordl ess handset might tak e a second or two to find the telephone base and pr oduce a dial tone. This is normal.
44 Appendix D T r oubleshooting The batteries do not hold a charge. If the cordl ess handset is in the telephone base or charger and the char ge light is not on, refer to The charge light is off (page 47) in this T r oubleshooting guide. Charge the batt ery in the cordless handset for at least 16 hours.
45 Appendix D T r oubleshooting I get noise, static, or weak signals even when I’m near the telephone base. If you subscribe to high-speed Internet servic e (digital subscriber line - DSL) through your t elephone lines, you must install a DSL filt er between the telephone base and the telephone wall jack.
46 Appendix D T r oubleshooting Make sur e that the ringer is not off. Refer t o the section on ringer selection in this user’s manual. Make sur e you plug in the telephone line cord secur ely into the telephone base and the t elephone jack. Make sure you plug in the power c ord secur ely.
47 Appendix D T r oubleshooting My calls cut in and out while I’m using my cor dless handset. Other electronic pr oducts can cause interferenc e with your cor dless phone. T ry installing your phone as far away fr om the following electronic devices as possible: television sets, V CRs, or other cordl ess telephones.
48 Appendix D T r oubleshooting System does not receiv e caller ID when on a call. Make sur e you subscribe to caller ID with call waiting featur es from your t elephone service provider . Caller ID features works onl y if both you and the caller are in areas offering call er ID service, and if both telephone companies use compatible equipment.
49 Appendix E T r oubleshooting I subscribe to a non-traditional telephone service that uses my computer to establish connections, and my telephone doesn’t work. Make sur e your computer is powered on. Make sur e your Internet connection is working properly .
50 Appendix E Maint enance T aking care of your tel ephone Y our cordless telephone contains sophisticat ed electronic parts, so you must treat it with car e. Avoid r ough treatment. Place the handset down gently . Save the original packing materials to pr otect your telephone if you ever need to ship it.
