9 Install ation options The telephone base comes with a mount br acket set for t abletop use. If you want to mount your tel ephone on a wall, swivel the mount brack et down so the telephone can connect with a st andard dual-stud tel ephone wall mounting plate.
10 Install ation options Getting st arted 3. Connect the telephone line cord and power adapt er cord t o the jacks on the bottom of the telephone base. If necessary , bundle the telephone c ord and power adapter cor d, and secure them with twist ties.

17 Handset set tings Home ar ea code If you dial seven digits to mak e a local call (no ar ea code requir ed), enter your area c ode into the telephone as the home ar ea code. When you rec eive a call from within your home ar ea code, the caller ID history onl y displays the seven digits of the telephone number .

23 Answering syst em set tings (handset only) Message alert tone When the message alert tone is set to ON , and ther e is at least one new message, the telephone base beeps every 10 sec onds. Unless you change it, the message alert tone is set to off .
24 T elephone base set tings Menu settings Y ou can use the base menu to change set tings. Refer to page 13 t o change the handset settings. 1. Press MENU/ SELE CT when in idle mode (when the phone is not in use) to enter the main menu. 2. Press q /CID or p /DIR to scr oll to the featur e to be changed.

27 Set date/time The answering system announces the da y and time of each message prior to playing it. Bef ore using the answering syst em, set the date and time as follows. If you subscribe t o caller ID service, the day , month and time are set automatically with each incoming call.
28 T elephone settings Use caller ID t o automaticall y set date and time Y ou can choose if the date and time ar e automatically set by inc oming caller ID. The defaul t setting is on. 1. When the telephone base is in idle mode, pr ess MENU/ SELECT to ent er the main menu.
29 T elephone base set tings T elephone settings Dial mode The dial mode is preset t o tone dialing. If you have pulse (r otary) service, you must change the dial mode to pulse dialing befor e using the telephone. T o set the dial mode on the tel ephone base: 1.
30 Making, answering, and ending calls Making a call Using a cor dless handset: Press PHONE/ FLASH or /SPEA�ER SPEA�ER , then enter the telephone number.
31 T emporary ringer sil encing Press OFF/ CLEAR or M UTE/ DELETE on a cordl ess handset, or press MUTE on the tel ephone base when there is a call to silence the ringer t emporarily on that handset or the telephone base only . This turns off the ringer without disconnecting the call.

34 Handset oper ation Equalizer The equalizer featur e on the cordl ess handset enables you to change the quality of the audio to best suit your hearing. While on a call or an inter com call or listening to a message or announcement, press E Q to select the equalizer setting: T rebl e 1 , T r eble 2 , Bass or Nat ural (the default set ting).

36 Options while on calls To tak e a call off mut e on the telephone base: • Press MUTE again. When mute is off, Microphone ON appears temporarily on the screen of the telephone base. Chain dialing Use this feature t o initiate a dialing sequence fr om the numbers in the directory , caller ID hist ory , or redial memory while you ar e on a call.
37 Options while on calls T elephone operation NOTES: 1. You cannot edit a dir ectory entry while on a call. For mor e details about the directory , see page 43. 2. You cannot copy a call er ID entry into the directory whil e on a call. For more details about the caller ID history , see page 52.
38 Multiple handset use Handset locat or The handset locator featur e is useful if you misplace any handset s. T o start the paging t one: Press L OCA TOR at the tel ephone base. Paging all handsets appears on the screen and the paging t one sounds on all handsets for 60 seconds.
39 Int er c om Use the interc om feature f or conversations between handsets. Y ou can buy additional expansion handsets (model A T&T CL80100) for this t elephone base. Y ou can regist er up to 12 handsets to the t elephone base. The first nine handset that you r egister are named HANDSET 1 - 9 .
40 Multiple handset use 2. If the called handset is not answer ed within 100 seconds, or if it is in the directory or call l og mode, or is on a call, or is out of range, the calling handset shows Unable t o call. NOTE: Only one person can review the direct ory at a time. If another person tries to enter the directory , the screen shows Not available at this time .

Entries ar e stored in r everse chronol ogical order . The phone deletes the oldest entry when the log is full t o make r oom for new calls.

60 T urn the answering system on or off at the t elephone base Unless you change it, the answering syst em is on and ready t o recor d messages. Y ou can turn the answering system off , but if you do so, the answering system does not answer calls and recor d incoming messages.
61 About the answering syst em Call scr eening at the tel ephone base If the answering system and call scr eening are on, the announcement and the incoming message are audibl e at the telephone base when a call arrives. Y ou can turn call screening on or off using a c ordless handset (see page 21) or using the telephone base.
62 Message playback If you have new messages, /PLAY/STOP on the telephone base flashes and only the new messages are pla yed (oldest first). If there ar e no new messages, the system play s back all the messages (oldest first). When playback begins, the total number of messages is announc ed.
63 Message playback Press X/DELETE to del ete the message. Press / PLAY /STOP to stop the pla yback. When messages ar e playing on the cor dless handset: Press q CID /-V OL UME or p DIR /VOL UME+ to adjust the message playback volume. Pr ess E Q to adj ust the me ssag e p lay bac k au dio qua lity .
64 R ecor ding and playing memos Memos are messages you r ecord at a c ordless handset or the tel ephone base. Y ou can rec ord, playback, and delet e them like incoming messages. Y ou can recor d a memo as a reminder t o yourself, or l eave a message for others who use the answering system.
65 Base message count er displ ays The base message counter shows the t otal number of answering system messages. See the table below for other message c ounter displays.
66 R emot e acc ess Y ou can reach y our answering system remot ely by dialing your home telephone number fr om any touch-tone t elephone. T o r emotely r each y our answering syst em: 1. Dial your telephone number fr om any touch-tone t elephone. 2. When the system answers, ent er the two digit remote ac cess code ( 19 is the default c ode.
67 NOTES: 1. If you do not enter a valid r emote access code, the syst em answers the call as a normal incoming call. 2. If you pause for more than f our seconds during remote acc ess, you hear a help menu listing all features and c ommands. If you pause for another 20 seconds, the call disconnects.
68 Appendix Expansion handset Y our new A T&T CL84100/CL84200/CL84250/CL84300/CL84350 telephone system can ac commodate up to 12 handsets. Y ou can add new handsets (A T&T CL80100, available separat ely) to your t elephone system, but must register each devic e with the telephone base bef ore use (see page 69).

If you subscribe to high-speed Internet servic e (DSL - digital subscriber line) through your t elephone line, you must install a DSL filt er between the telephone line cor d and the telephone wall jack (see page 5).
79 T r oubleshooting Charge the batt ery in the cordl ess handset for at least 16 hours. For optimum daily performance, r eturn the cor dless handset to the handset charger when not in use. Y ou may have t oo many ext ension phones on your telephone line to allow all of them to ring simult aneously .
