The Power-up Sequence 23 The Power -up Sequence The following sections describe how to get your Switch 3870 powered-up and r eady for operatio n. Powering-up the Switch 3870 Use the following sequence of steps to power -up the Switch. 1 Plug the power co rd into the power socket at the r ear of the Switch.
24 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH For full redundancy , the unit requires two T ype 3 Power Modules combined using a T ype 3 Y -Cable (part number 3C16077). WAR NI N G: If yo u are connecting the Switch to a T ype 3 Power Mod ule, read the Safety Information section in the T ype 3 Power Module User Guide.
SFP Operation 25 CAUTION: If you want to install the Switch usin g a Category 5E or Category 6 cable, 3Com recomm ends that you briefly connect the cable to a grounded port before connectin g ne twork equipmen t. If you do not, the cable’ s Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) may damage the Switch's port.
26 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH Use this transceiver to connect the Switch directly to a single-mode fiber -opt ic cable or to multimode fiber using a conditioned launch cable. ■ 1000BASE-LH70 SFP transceiver Use this transceiver to connect the Switch directly to a single-mode fiber -optic cable.

3 S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT Y our Switch can operate in its default state, that is, you can install it and it will work straight away (plug-and- play). However , to make full use of the features of fered by the Switch, and to change and monitor th e way it works, you have to acce ss the management software that r esides on the Switch.
30 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT Setting Up Overview This section gives an overview of what you need to do to get your Switch set up and r eady for man agement wh en it is in i ts default st ate. The whole setup process is summarized in Figur e 6.
Setting Up Overview 31 CAUTION: T o protect yo ur Switch from unauthorized access, yo u must change all three default passwords as soon as possible, even if you do not intend to actively manage your Swit ch. For more inform ation on de fault users and changing default passwords, see “Def ault Users and Passwords” on page 43 .

Manually Configuring IP Informatio n 33 Manually Configuring IP Information Y ou can manually configure the Switch IP information in the following way: ■ Connecting to the console port — connect a workstation using a console cable to the console port of the Switch .
34 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT Connecting the W orkstat ion to the Switch 1 Connect the workstation to the console port using an RJ-45 to DB9 converter cable and a standard null modem cable as shown in Figure 7.
Manually Configuring IP Informatio n 35 2 At the login and password pr ompts, enter admin as your user name and press Return at the password prompt. If you have logged on correctly , the top-level menu of the co mmand line i nterface is displayed as shown in the example in Figure 8.
36 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT Viewing Automatically Configured IP Information If you allow the Switch to automatica lly configure its own IP information you need to discover and view the IP information before you can begin to manage the Switch.

Setting Up Command Line Interface Management 41 CLI Management via the Console Port T o manage a Switch using the co mmand line interface via the local console port connection: 1 Ensure you have conne cted your work station to the console port correctly as described in “Connecting to the Console Port” on page 33.
42 C HAPTER 3: S ETTING U P FOR M ANAGEMENT Setting Up Web Interface Management This section describes how you ca n set up web interface man agement over the network. Pre-r equisites ■ Ensure you have already set up the Switch with IP information a s described in “Set ting Up Overview” on page 30.
Setting Up SNMP Management 43 If you get an error message, check that your IP information has been entered corr ectly and the Switch is powered up. 3 Open your web browser and enter the IP address of the Switch that you wish to manage in the URL locator , for example, in the following format: http://xxx.

4 P RO B L E M S OLVING This chapter helps you to diagnose and solve problems you may have with the operation of your Switch. There is also an explanation of IP addressing.
46 C HAPTER 4: P ROBLEM S OLV ING Solving Problems Indicated by LEDs If the LEDs on the Switch indicate a problem, r efer to the list of suggested solutions below . The Unit LED does not light Check that the power cable is firmly connected to the Switch and to the supply outlet.
Solving Hardware Problems 47 ■ An inter nal fan has malfunctioned . If a fan has stopped spinning, power off the unit and check the air vents for obstructio ns. If this situation occurs, the Fault LED will light red. ■ The internal PSU has failed and power is being supplied by an e xternal Redundant Power Supply (RPS).
48 C HAPTER 4: P ROBLEM S OLV ING A fan failure warning message is r eceived Y our Switch has a fan monitoring syst em that will generate fan failure warning messages. Fan failure could poten tially r educe th e lifet ime of th e Switch. The monitoring system polls the fan status at periodic intervals while the unit is powered up.
Solving Communication Problems 49 ■ The ambient temperatures and environmental conditions meet those specified in Appendix C. 4 Power cycle the unit. If a further thermal shutdown occurs, and all environmental conditions are satisfactory , return the unit to 3Com.

If your network has a connection to the external IP network, that is, you access the Internet, you must appl y for a registered IP address.
