1 Getting to know your T ravelMate 4 Left view 5 Click buttons (left, center and right) The left and right butt ons function like the left and right mouse buttons; the center button serves as a 4-way scroll button. 6 Floppy disk drive (or card reader if installed) Reads/writes data from/to the media.

11 Indicators The computer has seven easy-to-rea d status icons below the display screen. Icon Function Description Power Lights green when the computer is on and lights orange when the computer is i n Standby mode. Media activity Lights when the hard disk is active.
1 Getting to know your T ravelMate 12 Using the keyboar d The full-sized keyboard includes an embedded n umeric ke ypad, separate cursor keys, two Window s keys and twelve function keys. Special keys Lock keys The keyboard has three lock keys whic h you can toggle on an d off.
13 Embedded numeric keypad The embedded numeric keypad func tions like a desktop numeric keypad. It is indicated by small ch aracters located on the upper right corner of the keycaps. To simplify th e keyboard legend, cur sor-control key symbols are not printed on the keys.

15 Hot keys The computer employs hot keys or ke y combinations to acces s most of the computer’s contro ls like screen bright ness, volume output. To activate hot keys, press and hold the Fn key before pressing the other key i n the hot key comb ination.
1 Getting to know your T ravelMate 16 Fn-F5 Display toggle Switches display output between the display screen, external monitor (if connected) and b oth the display screen and external monitor . Fn-F6 S creen bla nk T urns the display scree n backlight off to save power .
17 The Euro symbol If your ke yboard la yout is set to United Stat es-International or United Kingdom or if you have a keyboard with a European layout, you can type the Euro symbol on your keyboard. Note for US keyboard users: The keyboard layout is set when you first set up Windows.
1 Getting to know your T ravelMate 18 5 Click on OK . To type the Euro symbol: 1 Locate the Euro symbol on your keyboard. 2 Open a text editor or word proc essor . 3H o l d Alt Gr and press the Euro symbol. Note : Some fonts and software do not support the Euro symbol.
19 E-Mail Detection Click right button at the Launch Manager icon on the taskbar and click on E-Mail Detection. In this dialog box, you have the op tion to enable/ disable mail checking, set the time in terval for mail ch ecking, etc. If you already have an email account, you can fill in Us er Name, Password and POP3 Sever in the di alog box.
1 Getting to know your T ravelMate 20 T ouchpad The built-in touchpad is a pointing de vice that sen ses movement on its surface. This means the cursor resp onds as you mo ve your f inger on the surface of the touchpad. The central location on the palmre st provide s optimal comfort and su pport.
21 a page up, down, left or right. This bu tton mimics you r cursor pressing on the vertical and horizo ntal scroll ba rs of Windows applications. Note: Keep your fingers d ry and clean when using the touchpad. Also keep the touchpad dry and clean . The touchpad is sensitive to finger movements.
1 Getting to know your T ravelMate 22 Storage This comput er suppli es you with the following media storage: • High-capacity Enhanc ed-IDE hard disk • Optical drive Har d disk The high-capacity hard disk is the answer to your storage needs. This is where your programs and data are stored.
23 Using softwar e Playing DVD movies When the DVD-ROM drive module is in stalled i n the opti cal drive b ay, you can play DVD movies on your c omputer. 1 Eject the DVD tray and insert a DV D movie disc; then close the DVD tray . Important! When you launc h the DVD player for the first time, the program asks you to input the region code.
1 Getting to know your T ravelMate 24 Audio The computer comes with 16-bit high -fidelity AC’97 ste r eo audio, an d includes a built-i n sensitive micr opho ne and dual stereo speakers. There are audio ports on the right side of the computer. See “Right view” on page 5 for more informati on on connecting external audi o devices.
25 Power management This computer ha s a built-in powe r management unit that monitors system activity. System a ctivity refe rs to any activity involving one or more of the following devices: keyb oard, mouse, floppy drive, hard disk, peripherals connecte d to the serial and pa rallel ports.

Disconnecting fr om the desktop Follow these steps to disconnect your computer from external accessorie s: 1 Save your work in progress.

When you are ready to use the comp uter again, unla tch and open the display; then slide and release the power switch. Note: If the sleep indicator is off, the computer has entered Hibernation mode and turned o ff.

2 Customizi ng my computer 38 Built-in network feature The built-in network feature allows you to connect your computer to an Ethernet-based (1 0/100 Mbps) network. To use the network feature, conn ect an Ethernet c able from the network jack on the r ear of the co mputer to a network jack or hub on your network.
39 IEEE 1394 port The computer's IEEE 1 394 port allo ws you to connect to an IEEE 1394 supported devices like a video camera or digital camera. See your video or digital camera 's do cumentation for details.
2 Customizi ng my computer 40 Inserting a PC Card Insert the card into the slot and make the proper co nnection (e.g., network cable), if necessary. See your card manual for details. Ejecting a PC Card Before ejecting a PC Card: 1 Exit the applicatio n using the card.

You can access the Launch Manager by clicking on Start , All Programs , and then Launch Manager to start the application.

This chapter instructs y ou on how to deal with common system problems. Read it before calling a technician if a problem occurs. Solutions to more se rious problems require opening up the computer . Do not attempt to open the computer by y ourself. Contact your dealer or an authorized service center for assistance.
47 Fr equently-asked questions The following is a list of possible situations th at may arise during the use of your computer. Easy answer s and solutions are provided for each one. I opened the display and pr essed the power switch, but computer does not start or boot- up.
3 T roubleshooting my co mputer 48 Image is not full-screen. The computer display has a native resolution of 1 024 x 768 (XGA) for the 14.1”/15.0” or 1400 x 1050 (SXGA+ ) for the 15.0”(select ed models only). If you set the resolution lo wer than this, the screen expands to fill the comp uter display.
49 cannot eject the optical drive tray . There is a mechanical eject button on the optical drive. Simply insert the tip of a pen or pap ercli p and push to eject the tray. The keyboard does not respond. Try attaching an external keyboard to the USB or PS/2 ports of the computer.
