User’ s Guide 1 Unpack and Inspect Y our Scanner After unpacking your new scanner , check the contents of the shipping carton to ensure all the items you or dered are included: • PowerScan ® RF handheld scanner • Battery Pack(s) • User ’s Guide (this manual) • Optional Accessories that you order ed.
2 PowerScan ® RF Scanner Installing the Battery Orient the battery as shown in Figure 1, then push it into the scanner until it snaps in place. T o r emove the battery , push in on the release tabs on both sides of the battery’s base and pull it straight out of the scan- ner .
User’ s Guide 3 Ve r i f y i n g Scanner Operation Once a charged battery has been inst alled in the scanner , scan the sam- ple bar codes in the back of this ma nual that correspond to the symbol- ogies your scanner is programmed to r ead. If unsure how to do this, see the section on How to Scan in this manual.

6 PowerScan ® RF Scanner The existing Base Station system configuration can be automatically downloaded to the scanner . This automatic download feature is config- urable and can be disabled. See the Systems Manual for more informa- tion about this feature.

8 PowerScan ® RF Scanner Using the P owerScan RF System This section covers the following topics: • Battery Charging and Maintenance • How to Scan • LED and Beeper Indications Battery Charging and Maintenance Seat the scanner in the Base Station as shown in Figure 4, ensuring that the battery fully engages the stat ion’s metal contacts.
User’ s Guide 9 Rapid flashing indicates that charging is taking place. Rapid char ging occurs when the battery temperature is between 10°C (50°F) and 46°C (1 15°F), and/or voltage of the batt ery is between 2.0 and 3.2V . Charge time is less than 4.
10 PowerScan ® RF Scanner Four Station Charger If you have a Four Station Charger , batteries are inserted for charging as shown in Figure 5. A 90% rapid char ge can be achieved in only two hours when using this optional accessory , half the time than when a Base Station is used for charging.
User’ s Guide 11 How to Scan Figure 6 illustrates some tips to help get the best scanning r esults: 1. The scanner must be pointed at a slight angle to the bar code. Do not hold the scanner perpendicular to the bar code. 2. The laser beam must cross the entir e bar code.
12 PowerScan ® RF Scanner Depth of Field There ar e currently four dif ferent range models for the scanner . Depending upon the model type of yo ur scanner , you’ll need to hold the unit at a given distance from the bar code to achieve optimum scan- ning results.

16 PowerScan ® RF Scanner LED and Beeper Indications The Base Station LED indicators and the scanner ’s LEDs and beeper are used to announce system status and perform other useful signals. The tables below list the default function of each of the various indica- tors.

20 PowerScan ® RF Scanner Enhanced Scanning for Hard-to-Read Bar Codes Decoded scanners can be programmed to decode extremely poor qual- ity bar codes by activating advanced Quadralogic II™ Decoding. T o select this feature, see the Pr ogramming Guide.
User’ s Guide 21 Laser Cautions The PowerScan RF bar code scanner is certified in the U.S. to conform to the requir ements of DHHS/CDRH 21CFR Subchapter J for Class II laser products (SR and LR) and Class IIIa (XLR) . Class II and IIIa pr oducts are not considered to be hazar dous.
22 PowerScan ® RF Scanner Radio Frequency Interference This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is sub- ject to the following two conditions: 1. This device may not cause harmful interference, and 2. This device must accept any interference r eceived, including interference that may cause undesir ed operation.
User’ s Guide 23 Maintenance The scan window will requir e occasional cleaning to remove smudges, dust and other debris. T o ensure op timal performance, clean the Scan W indow using a soft cloth or lens tissue dampened with isopropyl alcohol (or equivalent).
