4 A WORD ABOUT SAFETY We ha ve taken ever y prec aution in designi ng thi s meter to en- sure that i t is as safe a s po ssi ble. But safe op erati on depends on you, the ope rator . We recom mend tha t you f ollow thes e sim ple s afe t y rule s : • Never apply volta ges to the met er tha t exceed the l imits give n in the sp ecifi cati ons.

12 INST ALLIN G A BA TTER Y Your met er uses on e AA batte ry for power . We r ecommend a n alka line bat te ry, such as Radio Shac k Cat. No. 23- 552/557. WARNINGS: • TO A VOID ELECTRIC SHOCK, DISCONNECT BOTH TEST LEADS FROM ANY EQUIPMENT BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE BA TTERY .
13 Follo w these steps to ins tal l the bat tery. 1. Set the funct ion sel ector to OFF a nd remove t he tes t leads fr om all test ci rc uits. 2. Use a Phillips screwdri ver to remove the screw on the back of the meter . 3. Remove the b ack of the meter .
14 4. Replace t he weak b at t ery wi th a fresh one, fol l owing the corr ect p olari ty (+ and –). 5. Replace the bac k and secu re it with the screw . Note: If you ca nnot adjust the poin ter to “0” on th e scale whe n you m easure resi stance (see “ Measuri ng Resis tance” ), it is ti me to r eplace the battery.
15 REPLA CING THE FUSE Your met er is protec ted by a 315 mA fus e. WARNINGS: • TO A VOI D ELECTRI C SHOCK, DI SCONNECT BOTH TEST LEADS FROM ANY EQU IPMENT BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE FUSE. • DO NOT OPERA TE THE M ETER UNTIL YOU REPLACE THE FUSE AND CLOSE THE BACK COVER.
16 CAUTION: FOR CONTINUED PROTECTI ON AGAINST FIRE OR OTHER HAZARD, REPLACE THE FUSE ONLY WITH A 315 mA, 250 V, 5 X 20 MM MINIATURE FUSE (CAT. NO. 27 0- 1046) .

18 OPER A TION Cauti ons: • Use only th e same type of te st lea ds that a r e suppl ied with your meter . These tes t leads are rat ed for 100 0 volt s. Rep lacement s are avail able at your local Radi o Shack st ore. • When the meter is not in use, al ways leave th e funct ion se l ector set t o OFF .
19 Warni ngs: • Do not try to measur e any volt age over the meter’s rat - ing. Us e extreme c are when you u se these hi gh-vol tage ranges. • Never con nect the pr obe you pl ug int o the negat ive (–) termi nal to a sourc e of vo ltage more tha n 500 V .
20 MAKING ACCURA TE MEASUREMENTS For the most acc urate re ading, the te mperatur e shoul d be be- tween 43 °F and 74°F ( 6°C and 23°C) with an 80% maxi mum rela t iv e h u mid it y. Keep th e meter lying f lat on a no n-metal lic surf ace. Al so, us e a range setting t hat results i n a reading i n the upper t hi rd of t he met er sc ale.

22 Zero Adj ustment If the poi nter d oes no t nor m ally r est exact ly over 0 a t the left side of t he ACV/DC.VMA scal e, adjust th e plas tic screw in th e cente r of the tester face to bring the pointe r to zero.
23 Measuring High V olt ages When you measure vol ta ge in a hi gh-vol tage ci rcuit , do not try to posi tion both pro bes at onc e. Clamp o ne of th e probes t o the ci rcui t’s neut r al or gr ound lead u sing a Radio Sha ck insu- lated s lip-on al liga tor clip (Cat.
24 No te : I n AC wiri ng circ uits, t he ground l ead i s usual ly a bare, green, or wh i t e lead and the hot wi re is usu al l y red , bla ck, or blue. In DC wi ring circuit s, th e ground lead is us ually a bl ack lead; the hot wire is usual ly red.
25 Measuring DC V oltage WARNING: IF YO U ATTEMPT TO MEASURE A VOLTAGE ABOVE 1000 VOLTS DC, YO U M IGHT DAMAGE YOUR METER AND EXPOSE YOURSELF TO A SEVERE SHOCK HAZARD.

29 Measuring 3-Phase AC V olt age This meter is prim arily desi gned to measur e househol d AC volta ges and i s not in tended f or commerc ial or in dustri al use .
30 To det er mine t he line- to-li ne v oltag e, m ultipl y the ra ted l ine-t o- ground voltage by 1.732. F or exampl e, if th e r at ed vol tage is 600 vol ts, the lin e-to- li ne vol tage woul d be: 600 Vol ts x 1.732 = 1039.2 Vol ts In t his exampl e, th e volt age exceeds the meter ’s ra nge and shoul d not be measured.
31 Measuring AC V oltage on a DC Source Bias WARNING: NEVER M EASURE MORE T HAN 30 VOLTS AC ON A DC SOURCE BI AS. When an AC voltag e has been superimpo sed on a DC sour ce bias, you can not take ordinar y measur ement s. The readi ngs wander on the sc al e an d are not a ccurat e.
32 MEASURING DC CURRENT WARNING: NEVER CONNECT THE TEST L EADS TO A SOURCE OF UNKNOWN VOLTAGE WHEN YOU HAVE SET THE FUNCTION SELECTOR TO THE 150 mA DC POSI - TION.
33 2. Break t he elect rica l path for the ci rcui t in which you want to measur e current. Then c onnect the bl ack t est pr obe to the negat ive si de and th e red tes t probe to t he positi ve side of t he ci rcuit . Read t he res ults on th e scal e.
34 MEASURING RESIST ANCE WARNINGS: • NEVER CONNECT THE TEST LEADS TO A SOURCE OF VOL T AGE WHEN YOU HA VE SET THE FUNCTION SELECTOR TO THE Rx1K W POSITION. • BE SURE THA T THE CIRCUIT UNDER TEST HAS ALL POWER REMOVED AND THA T ANY ASSOCI A TED CAP ACITORS ARE FULL Y DISCHARGED BEFORE YOU MAKE A RESI ST ANCE MEASUREMENT .
35 1. Disconne ct power f rom the ci rcuit yo u are test ing. Then unplug th e power co r d and remove any bat teri es. 2. Set the f unctio n selector t o Rx1K W . T o uch the pro bes togeth er and adjust the OHMS AD J . co nt rol to b ring th e point er to the “ 0 ” p osition on the s cale.
36 Notes: • When you measure t he resi stanc e of a c omponen t in a cir cuit, disco nnect one side of the componen t you are test ing. This prevent s other co m ponent s in the cir cuit fro m interferi ng wi th the reading .
