6 O PER ATIO N T he A FX-400 manag es y our incoming c alls by listening for a f ax alert tone or transfer code, then routing the call to the cor- r ect jack. •A fax alert tone (CNG tone) is a sig nal sent by most fax machines to tell the receiving device that a fax wil l be transmitted.
7 RECEIVI NG V OICE CALLS To an s w er a call, pick up any phon e on the sam e line as the AFX-400 . If i t is a voice call, talk as usual. O therwis e: • If you a hear a fax alert tone, enter # 9 1 and hang up. The AFX-400 will route the ca ll to the FA X / M O D E M jack.

W hen the AFX -400 hears a fax a lert tone, it automaticall y r outes the call to t he FA X / M O D E M jack. F ax calls can also be route d us ing transfer codes or a distinc- t ive ring service (see “Using a Distinctive Ri n g Service” on P age 9).

10 USING Y OUR F AX MACHINE AS A S CANNER I f your compu ter has a fax/modem card installed, the AFX- 400 l ets you use your fax machine as a full-page scanner. F ollow these steps to scan a document through the AFX-40 0. 1. Connect a fax m achine t o the FA X / M O D E M jack, and con- nect your fax/mo dem to t he PHONE jack.
11 QUESTIONS AND ANS WERS W hat is line sharin g ? Line sharing lets you use one telephone line fo r more than one purp ose. For example, you can use one t elephone line for reg- ular calls, fax or m odem transmission s, or calls to your an- swerin g machine.
