Howe ver, each device that you connect to the t ele- phone line draws power from the li ne. We refer to this powe r draw as the phone’s ringer equivalence number , or REN.

6 IN STALLATI ON MOUNTING THE PHONE You can plac e the E T-1104’s base on a desk or table, mount it on a standard wall plate, or mount it directly on a wall.
7 4. Insert the supplied AC a dapter ’s barrel plug into the DC IN 9V ja ck on the back of the base. 5. Route the adapter ’s cord through the strain relief s lot on the bracket. 6. Plug the adapt er into a sta ndard A C outle t . 7. Lift the base ’ s antenna to a ve r tical positio n.
8 5. Plug the modular cord i nt o the wall plate jack, then a li gn the brac ket’ s keyhole slots with the wall plate studs and slid e t h e base do wnward to secure it . 6. Plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. 7. Press and lift out the handset hold- er , rot ate it 180 × , then snap it back into p lace.
9 4. Route the mo dular cord t hrou gh t he wide groove on t he bottom of the bracket. 5. Insert the supplied AC a dapter ’s barrel plug into the DC IN 9V ja ck on the back of the base. 6. Route the adapter ’s cord through the narrow groo v e on the bottom of the bracket.
10 CONNECTING AND CHARGING T HE BATTERY PACK The ET-1104 come s with a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery pack in the handset but not connec ted. Before using your phone , you m ust connec t the ba t- tery pack and t hen charge it for about 24 hours.
11 Also, c heck the charging con tacts on the handset and the b ase. If the contact s are dirty or tarnished, clean them with a pencil eraser . • I f the battery pack be comes weak during a call, you he ar a beep ev ery 4 s econds and t h e LOW B A TT indi - cator flashes.
12 SETTI NG THE RINGER ’ S T ONE AND V OLUME You can set four ringer tones and a hi gh and low volume for each. To change th e tone, lift the handset and press FLASH . Then, enter th e r inger tone number (1–4) us ing the num ber keys. The selected tone sounds briefly.
13 OPERATION MAKING AND RECEIVING CALLS To m ake a c all, lift the h andset and press TA L K . T he TALK indicator on the hands et and the IN USE indicator on t he base light . W hen you hear a dial tone, dial the number. To answer a c all, simply li ft t he h andset from the base.
14 USING MUTE To talk to s o meone in the room without the person on the other end of the phone line hearin g y o ur convers ation, press MUTE . The MUTE indicator flash- es.
15 PAGING To page the person who has the han d- set or t o locate the handset when t he phone is no t in use, pre s s PA G E on the base . T he handset beeps for about 15 second s. To stop the beepin g s o oner, press TA L K on the hands et tw ice or PA G E on th e base.
16 4. T o assign t he n umber t o a s peed di- al button, press MEM , then press a speed dial button ( M1 – M4 ). T o store the number in a sta ndard memory loc at i on, press MEM , the n enter the two-digit memory location number (01–20). The handset sounds a long beep to indicate t hat the n umber is stored.
17 To dial a numb er stored in a standa r d memory locati o n, pre ss TA L K . When you hea r a dial tone, press MEM an d en- ter the two-digit memory location num- ber for the number you want to di a l. Note: If you select an inval id memory lo- cation (for ex ample 3 instead of 03), t he phone s ound s a n error tone.
18 T ROUBLES HOO TING We do not expect you to have any problems with your ET -1104, but if you do, the fol- lowing sugg esti ons m ight help. Problem Sugge stion The phone does not work or works poorly . Be sure the base’s phone line cord an d AC adapter a r e correctly and securely con- nected, and the battery p ac k in the handset is charge d.
19 If y ou still have prob lems, disco nnect the phone . If other phones on the sam e line work prope r l y, the fault is in this phone or its installation. If you cannot fi n d the prob- lem, take your ET-1104 to your local RadioShack store for ass istance.

21 REPLACING T HE BATTE RY PACK If you follow the instructions in “ Connect- ing and Chargin g the Battery Pack” on Page 10, the battery pac k should last about o ne year. If the battery pack do es not ho ld a charge for more than 2 h ours after an overnigh t charge , replace it with a new 3.
22 THE F CC W A NTS Y OU TO KNOW In the unlikely event t h at your phone causes probl em s on the phone l ine, the phone company can temporarily discon- tinue yo ur service.
