A Quick Look at Your Multimeter ˆ A Quick Look at Y our Multimeter OHMS ADJU ST (le ft s ide o f AC AMMETER MUL TIMETER multimeter) Ω O H M S.
Preparation ˆ Preparation INSTALLING A BATTERY Your multi meter requires one AAA battery (not supp lied) f or power. Fo r the best p erforma nc e an d lo nge st life , we rec ommend a Radio Shack al ka- line ba ttery.
Preparation 4. Place the battery in the c ompart- ment as indicate d by the po larity symbol s (+ an d –) marke d insid e. 5. Repla ce the bac k cover an d the top cove r , then secure them with the screws.
Using the Multimeter 3. Use th e screw to se cure the ammete r to the multim eter , then put the top c over you rem oved in Step 1 in a safe pl ace.
Using the Multimeter MEASURING DC/AC V OLTAGE WARNINGS: • NEVER CLAM P A TEST LEAD TO A HOT WI RE (USUALL Y RED, BLACK, OR BLUE IN AC WIRING CIRCUITS). IF ONE LEAD IS CLAMPED TO A HOT WIRE AND YOU TOUCH THE MUL TIMETER’S OTHER PROBE, YOU COULD RECEIVE AN ELECTRIC SHOCK.
Using the Multimeter to 2, t he AC o r DC voltage is 100 vol ts (2 × 5 0 = 100V). • If th e functi on selec tor is set to 15 DCV , read the lower line of ACVA/DCVA on th e mul tim e- ter then mu ltiply the reading you se e by 5. Fo r example , if the need le points to 2, the DC voltage is 10 volts (2 × 5 = 10V) .
Using the Multimeter Measuring AC V oltage Riding on a DC Source Bias To mea sure A C volta ge supe rim- posed o n a DC voltage source bi as while ignoring the D C voltage , you must fir st measure the AC and DC voltage s sepa rately, the n compute the peak voltage using th is form ula: Peak vol tage = DC vo ltage + AC volt - age/0.
Using the Multimeter 1. Set the fun ction selec tor to 150 mA DC mA . 2. Remov e power from the circ uit under te st and discha rge all capac itor s.
Using the Multimeter 4. Hold d own the t rigger leve r on the amm eter . The amme ter ’s jaws open. Then inse rt the wire you ar e measurin g inside the probe 's jaws and rele ase t he trig- ger le ver. 5. Slide T/3A/15A/30A on the amme - ter to 3A , 15A , or 30A (to m easure current).
Using the Multimeter MEASURING W ATTAGE You can use the m ultimeter a nd am- meter to tel l h ow man y watts of powe r an appl iance u se s. Thi s hel ps y ou de - termine what t he el ectricity costs are for that a ppliance . The fo llow ing for mul a can hel p you make th e neces sary conv ersion.
Care • If the function se lector is set to R × × × × 1K Ω , multi ply that readi ng by 1000 t o compute th e resistan ce. For exa mple, i f the nee dle points to 1 , t he resist ance i s 1000 oh ms (1 × 1000 = 1000 Ω ).
Care REPLACING THE FUSE If the multi meter do es not work, you might nee d to replace the fus e with the suppl ied 315 mA, 250V ceram ic fuse. The spare fu se is next to the battery c ompartment. Caution: Do not use a fuse wi th rat- ings oth er than those s pecified here.
