However, each device you connec t to t h e phone line draws po wer from t he phone line. W e refer to this power draw as the dev ice’s ringer equivalence num ber , or RE N.

6 IN ST AL LA TIO N INSTALLING A BACKU P BATTERY The TAD requi res AC power t o operate. However, if AC power fails or you un- plug the TAD-1028, a 9-vol t back up bat- tery (not supp lied) saves the messages and th e settings f or the day, time, a nd remote operat ion security code.
7 Note: Adjust VO LU ME to th e mid d le po - sition before connec ting power. Caution: The supplied adapter sup - plies 9 volts AC, delivers at least 440 milliamps , and has a plug which prop er- ly fits the T AD-1028’s AC 9V 440m A jack. Using an adapter that does not meet these specifications m ight dam- age the TAD or the adapter.
8 When y ou first connect pow er , the PLA Y/S KIP indicator f lashes rap- idly (until you record the outgoi ng messag e), the ANSWER indicat or flashes (if you did not i nstall a backup ba ttery), an d the T AD-1028 automatically runs a s elf-test for about 1 0 seconds.
9 6. Slide t he hands et clip up and o ut of its retaining slot, rotate it 180°, then slide th e clip back int o its slot . 7. Plug the ot her e nd of the coiled cord into the handse t’s jack. 8. Place the h andset in the cradle. 9. Plug the ad apter into a standard AC out let.
10 3. Route the c ord into the groove on the phone’s base. 4. Plug o ne end of the supplied coiled cord into the jack on the bottom of the base and route the cord into the groove besid e the jack. 5. Insert the suppli ed AC adapter ’s barrel plug into the AC 9V 440mA jack on the back of the base.
11 W hen you first connect power , the PLA Y /SKIP indicator f lashes rap- idly (un til you rec ord t he outgoing mess age), the ANSWE R indicato r flashes (if you did not install a backup battery), and th e T AD-1028 automat ically runs a self-test for about 10 seconds .
12 PREP ARA TION SETTI NG THE DIALING MO DE Set TON E/P U LS E on the handset for the type of service you hav e. If you are not sure which type y o u have, do this test. 1. Set TO NE/PULSE to TONE . 2. Lift the hands et and listen f or a dia l ton e .
13 2. T o change the day of the week, repeated ly press OGM/R EPEA T to move backw ard or PL A Y/SKIP to move f orward t o the desi red day of the week. 3. Press ANSWER/ST OP/DELETE . Th e T AD-10 28 bee ps once and announc es the hour and “AM” o r “PM.
14 TE L EP H ON E OP ERA TI O N Make and answer p hone calls on the TAD-1028 as you would wi th any other phone. Read this section to learn about the phone’s special features. SETTI NG THE HANDSET VOLUM E The ha ndset’s v olume con trol lets you adjust the sound you h ear through the handset.
15 USIN G THE PHONE NUMBER I NDEX CARD Use a straight ened p aper c lip or an oth- er small poi nt e d object to lift the plastic cover off the phone number index card. W r ite your pho ne number at the top and other important n ame s and numb ers below it.
16 ANSWE RIN G SY ST EM OP ERA T I ON RECORDING T HE OUTGOING MESSAGE Before you can s et the TAD-1028 to an- swer cal ls and record messages, you must record the outgoing mes sage (OGM) the c aller hears when the TAD answers a cal l. Your outgoin g message ca n be up t o 60 s e c o nd s l ong .

18 If you do not want to take the cal l, just let the TAD-10 28 finish rec ording the c all- er’s message. PLA YING MESSAGES If there are new messages, the P LAY/ SKIP i ndicator fl a shes un ti l all th e new messag es have been pl ayed. To play all mes sages, press PLA Y/SKIP .
19 DELETING MESS A GES To delete all the messages y ou have al- ready played, while playba ck is stopped, hold down ANSWER/STOP/DE- LETE . The TAD-102 8 sounds a long beep th en deletes all old m essages, but keep s any new messages (and the PLAY /SKIP indicator continues flash- ing).
20 1. Use a pointe d object, such as a straightened paper clip, to hold down CODE until the T AD-10 28 beeps and announces the first digit of the current security code. 2. Repeatedly press PLA Y/SKIP or OGM/REPEA T to set the first digit, then press ANSW ER/ST OP/ DELETE .
21 REMOTE OPERAT ION You can operat e the TAD-1028 from al - most any tou ch-tone phone, or fr om a rotary phone u sing a poc ket tone-dialer (available a t your local RadioShac k store). Notes: • W hen memory is full , t he T AD - 1028 ans wers the c a ll af ter two rings and annou nces, “Mem ory is full.
22 REMOTE COMMAND CODES Press: T o: 0 Stop mess age pla ybac k or recording. 1 Play the ou tgoing mess age. 2 Record a new outgoing mess age. W hen the T A D- 1028 a nnounces “Record announc em ent ,” begin spea king. Wh en you fin- ish, press 0 .
