The Ray54 provides two-way commun ications on all US, Canadian and Internati onal marine channels and we ather watch on ten weather channels. Chapter 2: Installation 3 Chapter 2: Installation 2.1 Unpacking and Inspection Use care when unpacking the unit from the shipping carton to prevent damage to the contents. It is also good practice to sav e the carton and the interior packing material in the event you must return the unit to the f actory .
4 Ray54 VHF Radio 2.2 Planning the Installation When planning the i nstallation of your Ray54, consider the following conditions to ensure dep endable and trouble-free operation . Mount the main unit to al low easy access from the location where the b oat is normally na vigated.

6 Ray54 VHF Radio 2.3 P ower Connections The red and black Power Cord provides connect ion to DC power . The red (+) wire contains a 7 amp in- line fuse. It should be connect ed to the positive terminal of the power source. The blac k (-) wire should be connected to the negative (ground) of the po wer source.
Chapter 2: Installation 7 2.4 External Speaker Connections Located just below the powe r cord is a cable for connection to an optional external speaker . Connect th e white (+) wire and black (–) wire to the speaker observing polari ty as it is marked o n the speaker .
8 Ray54 VHF Radio 2.7 Antenna Connections The coaxial VHF antenna cable connects to the Ra y54 antenna jack on the rear panel using a PL259 VHF type connect or . The antenna cable length can be critical to performance. If y ou are uncertain, contact a professional installer or call Raymarine Product Su pport.

12 Ray54 VHF Radio 9. CALL/MENU Press and release this key to sele ct to enter DSC Call Mode, which is used for making DSC Calls and viewin g the DSC Call Logs and the DSC Call Phonebook. A Maritime Mobile Service Iden tity (MMSI) number is requir ed to operate the DSC equipment in this radio.
Chapter 3: Getting Sta rted 13 Press and hold CALL/ME NU to select Menu Mode, w hich is used to set up the radio. The menu structure is outl ined in the following drawi ng. When the unit powers up in N ormal mode it: 1. Beeps, illuminates the back light at full brigh tness, and displays all seg- ments and indicator s for 2 se conds.
18 Ray54 VHF Radio As a part of FCC procedures and ma ri ne communications courte sy , initial contact should always be atte mpted using low power . Y ou should switch to high power only when co ntact can not be made on low power in emer gency situation s.
Chapter 4: General Oper ations 19 4.5 Setting the Channel On the microphone ... Press and r elease the UP arrow to increment the channel number . Press and r elease the DOWN arrow to d ecrement the channel. Press and hold either k ey for rapid channel scrollin g.
20 Ray54 VHF Radio The WX indicator appears on the LCD. Rotate the CH knob to select fro m channels WX01 thr ough WX10. Press and r elease the CLEAR/WX key again to return to normal operation. Note: 1. WX br oadcasts can only be hear d in the US and Canada.
Chapter 4: General Oper ations 21 Note: When you press the 16/9 key, the r adio always switches to HIGH pow- er. You can use the HL/USER key to change to LOW power. 4.8 Selecting the Second ary Priority Channel The Ray54 enables you to program the 16/9 key to store a Secondary Priorit y Channel.

24 Ray54 VHF Radio All Scan Press and r elease the SCAN/SA VE key when no channe ls are stored in memory to activate t he All Scan functio n. ALL SCAN appears on th e dot matrix disp lay . In All Scan mode, all channels i n the channel set are scanned in sequence, assuming no channels have been stor ed in memory .
Chapter 4: General Oper ations 25 In Saved Scan mode, only the channels that have been saved in memory are scanned in sequence. After the last saved channel number has been scanned, the cycle rep eats. Saved Scan is demonstrated in t he figure to the left.
26 Ray54 VHF Radio Priority Saved Scan Press and hold the SCAN/SA V E key while Saved Scan is active to initiate Priority Saved Scan. SA VED PSCAN appears on the dot matrix display .
Chapter 4: General Oper ations 27 The SA VED icon appears to indicate the cu rrent channel has been saved in memory . Any number of chan nels ca n be saved as memory channels. Separate memory channel groups ex ist s for USA, International, and Canadian frequency sets.
28 Ray54 VHF Radio 4.12 Using the Monitor Modes The W atch Modes mon itor the programmed Pr iority Channel and ot her user- selected channel(s). The watc h is halt ed when act ivity is detected on a monitored channel. The Ray54 is equipped with 2 typ es of monitor operations: Dual W a tch and T ri W atch.
Chapter 4: General Oper ations 29 Tr i W a t c h Press and hold the DW/ TRI key for 3 seconds to activate T ri W atch mode. TRI CH16 09 appears on the dot matrix display . T ri W atch monitors in cycle channel 16, th e current working channe l and the channel you have set as the Secondary Priority Channel.
30 Ray54 VHF Radio 4.13 USER Channel Mode Press and hold the HL/USER key whil e in normal operation mode to ent er User Mode. The USER and SA VED indicators appear .
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal l ing (DSC) 31 Chapter 5: Digital Selective Calling (DSC) The Ray54 includes equipment for Cl ass “D” Digital Selective Calling (DSC). DSC protocol is a glo bally applied system used to send and receive digital calls.
32 Ray54 VHF Radio 5.1 DSC Call Function DSC Call Mode is used to initi ate DSC Individual, Group, All Shi ps, Distress and Position Request calls and to access th e DSC Call Logs and Phoneb ook. The channel remains unch anged and you can per form normal TX operatio n.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal l ing (DSC) 33 Using the Micr ophone Keys to Make Se lections The examples in this chapter descri be how to make menu and character selections using the CH knob on the main unit. However , you can also press the microphon e UP/ DOWN keys to make sel ections, and then press the microphon e HI/LO key to accept.
34 Ray54 VHF Radio 5.2 Individual Calls The Ray54 can make Individual Routine calls. Making DSC Calls to Coast Stations The examples in th is handbook illustra te making DSC calls to Ship S tations. However, the procedures for ma king In dividual Calls to a Coast Station are diff erent.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective C al ling (DSC) 35 3. Rotate the CH knob until the arrow po ints to the de sired indi vidual name. If using MANUAL MMSI ID entry: Enter the MMSI number using the CH knob. Ro tate the CH knob to select each character and then push in the CH knob to accept.
36 Ray54 VHF Radio 6. Push in the CH knob to ac cept the selection. 7. Push CH knob again to send the Individual Call. The Individual Call is transmitted on channel 70, and then th e radio tunes to the original channel and waits f or acknowledgement. D uring this period you are still able to receive calls.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal l ing (DSC) 37 Receiving Individual Calls When an Individual Call is received, the radio s ounds an alert tone and displays the type of call, the name or MMSI number (if the caller ’ s MMSI number has not been programmed in to yo ur Phonebook) of the call er and the time the call was initiated.
38 Ray54 VHF Radio If the caller requests that you change to an unsupported working channel (channel 75, for example) the message INV ALID CHANNEL appears on the LCD. If an acknowledge is sent, the originating station is notified you were UNABLE T O COMPL Y with the channel change request.

The Group Call menu appears, which displays the Group en tries you have saved. Note: Only the Group IDs that h ave been programmed into mem ory ap- pear in the list.
40 Ray54 VHF Radio 7. Push in the CH knob to ac cept the selection. 8. Push the CH k nob again to sen d the Group Call. The Group Call is transmit ted on channel 70, and then t he radio tunes to the designated working chan nel to be used for the Group Cal l.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal l ing (DSC) 41 ➤ T o ignor e the Group Call: Press the CLEAR/WX key . The alert tone is muted, the Group Call is interrupted and th e normal scr een appears on the display . ➤ T o accept the Gr oup Call: Push the CH knob.
42 Ray54 VHF Radio 5.4 All Ships Calls An All Ships Call sends out a message to all ships within range that you need to advise of a hazardous situation or that you require assistance but the situation is not serio us enough for a Distress Call.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal l ing (DSC) 43 4. Rotate the CH knob to select URGENCY or SAFETY . 5. Press the CH knob again to send the call. 6. Push CH one more time t o reconfirm the All Ships Call. The call is transmitted on channel 70, and then the radio tunes to channel 16 at high power .
44 Ray54 VHF Radio ➤ T o silence the a lert tone: Press any key . Automatic alert tone ca ncellation takes place after 2 minutes. ➤ T o decline the All Ships Call: Press the CLEAR/WX key . The alert tone is mut ed, the All Ships Call is interrupted and the normal screen appears on the display .
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal l ing (DSC) 45 5.5 Distr ess Calls For a Distress Call transmission, the Ray54 takes the position and ti me information fr om the input NMEA data along with your MMSI and converts it into a digital “packet ”.
46 Ray54 VHF Radio To conform with regulat ions of the Ba sel Agreement for radiotelephone ser- vice on inland waterway s, DSC functions are disabl ed when ATIS is ac tive. Undesignated (Quick) Distress Call 1. Press and hold the red DISTRESS key for 3 seconds to initiate the call.

Dur- ing this time, th e radio beeps, the di splay flashes and a timer counts down 3...2...1. T o cancel the Distr ess Call: release the DISTRESS key before the countdow n has compl eted.
48 Ray54 VHF Radio Cancelling a Distress Call Made in Err or I f you should send a Distress Call in error , you should make an announcement as soon as possibl e that the distress situati on does not exist. 1. Immediately power of f the radio to cancel the Distress Call.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal l ing (DSC) 49 Note: The AUTO CH CHG option determines wh ether you want your ra dio automatically switched to channel 16 to receive the call or instead to be prompted t o manually rec eive or decl ine the channel change .
50 Ray54 VHF Radio 5.6 P osition Request W ith this option you can request GPS po sition information fr om any station capable of responding to t his type of call an d for which an MMSI number is known. Y ou can specify the target stati on either by sel ecting it from your MMSI phonebook or b y manually entering it s MMSI number .

52 Ray54 VHF Radio When the Position Request is accepted by the r eceiving station: When the posi tion request is received, th e Ray54 shows t hat the call h as been accepted by the requested station. T he radio sounds a Call Alert tone. Press any key to mute the alert tone.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal l ing (DSC) 53 Receiving a Position Request Fr om Another Station If you receive a position request from another station , how the Ray54 responds depends on the option you have set in the Position Reply menu item (see page 77 ).
54 Ray54 VHF Radio 2. Rota te the CH knob until the arrow poin ts to CALL LOG . 3. Push in the CH knob to select the Call Log. Entry 01 ap pears first with call type and time of the last call. This is the most recen t call. 4. Using the CH knob, scroll down the list of up to 20 entr ies.
Chapter 5: Digi tal Selective Cal l ing (DSC) 55 Saving an MMSI ID Number from a Call Log Entry Any undefined MMSI number that is li sted on an entry in the Call Log can be saved into the Phonebook. 1. Rotate the CH knob to select the desired Cal l Log entry .
56 Ray54 VHF Radio 5.8 DSC Distress Log The Distress Log is a list of all rece ived DSC Distress Calls by number and time of call. The Log maintains up t o 10 calls. When a DSC Distress Call is rece ived, th e envelope icon blinks on the LCD. The envelope icon disappears wh en the log is opened.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 57 Chapter 6: Menu Settings 6.1 Menu Function The radio’ s setup functions are accessed through the Menu mode. Menu mode selections are as follows. Item Description PHONEBOOK A list of frequently -called DSC stations that you can select for making an Individual Call.
58 Ray54 VHF Radio ➤ T o make Menu selections: 1. Press and hold the CALL/ MENU key to enter Menu mode. The list of available functions appear on the d ot matrix display . 2. Rota te the CH knob to scroll dow n the list until t he arrow points to the desired function.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 59 6.2 DSC Phonebook The Phonebook stores up to 20 prep rogrammed MMSI numbers that you can select for making an In dividual Call. The nu mbers are stored by name and contain the station’ s MMSI number . Y ou can add, edit and delete entries from the Phonebook, much as yo u would on a cellular t elephone.
60 Ray54 VHF Radio i. Rotate the CH knob to scroll through the selections. Note: The last sele ction in each field is a left arrow (<), which repre- sents a BACKSPACE. Accepting the arrow returns the current char- acter to its default valu e and moves you back to the previous positi on.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 61 7. When all characters have been selected, press the CH knob to SA VE . The new entry appears in the Phon ebook. Editing an Existing Entry 1. From the Phonebook, rotate the CH kn ob until the arrow on the d ot matrix display points to the ent ry you wish to edit.
62 Ray54 VHF Radio 5. When finished, push the CH knob to SA VE. The revised name appears in the list. Deleting an Existing Entry 1. From the Phonebook, rotate the CH knob until th e arrow on the dot matri x display point s to the entry you wi sh to delete.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 63 6.3 Local / Distant This mode toggles between full receiver sensitivity (Distant mo de) and attenuated receiver sensitivity (Local mode). Local mode is used to decrease unwanted reception (n oise). Local M ode is commonly used in areas where interference, usually from shore based paging systems, is high.
64 Ray54 VHF Radio 4. Push the CH k nob to accept your selection. 6.6 GPS/Time Setup By default, the Ray54 au to-detects NMEA strings and decodes appropriat e latitude/longitude p osition and time.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 65 2. Push in th e CH knob. The ar row is pointing to MANU AL POS . 3. Push CH again to accept. The Manual Position screen appears. 4. Using the CH knob, fill in th e Lat/Lon information, one ch aracter at a time. The first character space is hi ghlighted with a flash ing underline.
66 Ray54 VHF Radio 5. Use the same process to complete longitud e information. 6. Push in the CH knob to accept and move onto UTC time. Sel ect the time characters in the same manner . Note: You must enter the TIME parameter in UTC time and not in local time.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 67 1. Press and hold the CALL/MENU key to enter Menu mode. 2. Rotate the CH knob until the arrow points t o GPS/TIME . 3. Push the CH knob to accept. The GPS/T ime screen appea rs. 4. Rotate the CH knob and scroll down the list to SETTINGS .
68 Ray54 VHF Radio Latitude/Longitude Display The LL/DISPL Y setting indicates whether Latitu de and Lo ngitude position d ata are displa yed on the screen in normal mod e. Time Display The TIME DISPL Y setting indicates whet her time information is displ ayed on the screen in normal mode.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 69 6.8 Radio Setup The Radio Setup menu item i s used to determine four separat e settings: • Frequency Band • Channel Name • Ring V olume •K e y B e e p ➤ T o adjust these settings: 1. Press and hold the CALL/MENU key to enter Menu mode.
70 Ray54 VHF Radio Channel (CH) Name By default, the Ray54 lists a d escriptive name of up to 12 characters in the top line of the dot matrix display for each channel. Thi s option modifies the name for the currently-selected channel from its default.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 71 6.9 DSC Setup The DSC Setup menu item is used to determine these four functi ons: • t he radio’ s M MSI ID number • t he radio’ s G roup MMSI ID nu mber • how you.
72 Ray54 VHF Radio My MMSI ID This operation stores the MMSI number required for DSC communications, including Distress Calls. If you t ry to access a DSC function bef ore entering the MMSI number , an error message ap pears and you are pr ompted to enter the MMSI ID.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 73 4. When all digits are selected, press and hold the CH knob to accept. 5. Re-enter all nine MMSI digi ts. 6. When compl ete, pr ess and hold the CH knob to accept. 7. Press the CH knob one last time to save the MMSI ID n umber .
74 Ray54 VHF Radio Adding a New Group 1. From the DSC SETUP menu item d escribed on page 7 1 , rotate t he CH knob until the arrow points to GROUP SETUP . 2. Press the CH knob to accept. If an existing Group name and MMSI ID number are already stored, those va lues appear .
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 75 6. Contin ue this pro cess until all GROUP NAME characte rs have been entered. Press and hold the CH knob to accept the name and mo ve on to the GROUP ID . 7. Use the same procedure to enter the GROUP ID numbers. 8. Press and hold the CH knob to accep t.
76 Ray54 VHF Radio Editing an Existing Entry 1. From the DSC SETUP menu item de scribed on page 7 1 , rotate t he CH knob until the arrow points to GROUP SETUP . 2. Press the CH knob to accept. 3. Rota te the CH knob until the arrow po ints to the group location y ou wish to edit.
Chapter 6: Menu Settings 77 6. Make your changes, usin g the CH k nob using the same techni que described in Adding an Entr y on page 59. 7. Press and hold the CH knob to accept y our changes. 8. Press the CH knob to save. The revised entry appear s in the list.

MANU AL sends out the data only after y ou respond to the request. OFF will not send position data under any circumstances, nor notify you th at the request has been made.

80 Ray54 VHF Radio 6.10 Resetting Factory Defaults This feature returns all radi o settings to their factory defaults, including LOCAL / DIST , B ACKLIGHT , CONTRAST , RING VOLUME , KEY BEEP and manual GPS/TIME settings . MY MMSI ID numb er , CH NAME and the PHONEBOOK are not affected.
