Getting star ted 15 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . • Only microSIM car ds work with the device . • Some L TE ser vices may not be available depending on the service provider .
Getting star ted 16 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d into the slot until it locks in place . • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card.
Getting star ted 17 Removing the SIM or USIM car d Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out. Removing the batt er y Slide the battery lock to release the battery , and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 18 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 19 • The device can be used while it is char ging , but it may take longer to fully char ge the battery . • If the device receiv es an unstable power supply while charging , the touch screen may not function. If this happens, unplug the charger from the devic e.
Getting star ted 20 Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er . By customising these options and deactivating featur es in the background, y ou can use the device longer between charges: • When you ar e not using the device, switch to sleep mode b y pressing the P ower butt on.
Getting star ted 21 1 Slide the latch and open the flap . 2 Inser t a memor y card with the gold- colour ed contacts facing downw ards . 3 Push the memory card into the slot until it locks in plac e. 4 Replace the flap and slide the latch. Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val.
Getting star ted 22 F ormatting the memor y card A memor y card f or matted on a c omputer , memor y card reader , or other device ma y not be compatible with this device . F ormat the memor y card on this device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Mo re → Stor age → F ormat SD card → F ormat SD card → Erase ev er ything .
Getting star ted 23 A ttaching and remo ving a lens • Use only Samsung-appro ved lenses . Samsung is not responsible f or damage caused by using another manufacturer ’ s lenses . • Do not attach or remov e lenses in dust y , dir ty areas. Dust and f oreign par ticles can damage the lens or the device .
Getting star ted 24 A ttaching the lens T o attach the lens , align the red mark on the lens with the red mark on the device . Then, rotat e the lens as shown in the illustration un til it locks into place . 2 1 • If you attach a lens with the zoom lock switch, unlock it b y rotating the zoom ring anticlockwise.
Getting star ted 25 Removing the lens T o r emove the lens , turn off the device, press and hold the lens r elease button, and then rotat e the lens as shown in the illustration. 1 2 3 After remo ving the lens from the device , attach the lens cap and lens mount cov er to protect the lens sur face and electrical contacts from scratches .
Getting star ted 26 • F ollow all posted warnings and directions from authorised personnel in ar eas where the use of wir eless devices is restricted, such as aer oplanes and hospitals. • Pr ess and hold the Po wer button and tap Fligh t mode to disable the wireless featur es.

Basics 28 U sing the touch scr een Use only fingers to use the t ouch screen. • Do not allow the touch scr een to come int o contact with other electr ical devices .
Basics 29 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Double -tap again to return. F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel.
Basics 30 Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part. Pinch to zoom out . C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device.
Basics 31 T o pr event the displa y from r otating automatically , open the notifications panel and deselec t Screen rota tion . • Some applications do not allow screen r otation. • Some applications display a diff erent scr een depending on the or ientation.
Basics 32 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 33 C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback . Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report new messages, calendar events , device status, and more . Drag down from the status bar t o open the notifications panel.
Basics 34 • Mobile data : Activate or deactivate the da ta connection. • Blocking mode : Activate or deactivate blocking mode. In block ing mode , the device will block notifications. T o select which notifications will be blocked, tap Settings → My device → Blocking mode .
Basics 35 Adding an it em Cust omise the Home screen by adding widgets or f olders. T ap and hold the empty area on the Home screen, and then select one of the follo wing categories: • Apps and widgets : Add widgets or applications t o the Home screen.
Basics 36 Setting wallpaper Set an image or photo stored in the devic e as wallpaper for the Home screen. On the Home screen, tap → Set wallpaper → Home screen , and then select one of the follo wing: • Galler y : See photos taken by the device ’ s camera or images do wnloaded from the Internet.
Basics 37 Opening from r ecently-used applica tions T ap and hold to open the list of rec ently-used applications. Selec t an application icon t o open. Closing an application Close applications not in use to sa ve battery power and maintain devic e per formance .
Basics 38 Rearranging panels Pinch on the scr een, tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Installing applications Use application stor es, such as Samsung Apps , to download and install applications . Uninstalling applications T ap → Uninstall , and then select an application to uninstall it.
Basics 39 Ent ering te x t Use the Samsung keyboard or the v oice input feature t o enter text. T ext entr y is not suppor ted in some languages . T o ent er text, you must change the input language to one of the suppor ted languages .
Basics 40 Handwriting T ap and hold , tap , and then write a wor d with a finger . Suggested wor ds appear as characters are ent ered. Select a suggested wor d. Use handwriting gestures t o per form actions, such as editing or deleting characters and inser ting spaces.

Basics 42 Setting up acc ounts Google applications, such as Play St ore , requir e a Google account, and Samsung Apps requir es a Samsung account. C reate Google and Samsung acc ounts to ha ve the best experience with the device .
Basics 43 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not suppor ted depending on the version of the devic e’ s sof tware or the computer operating syst em.
Basics 44 C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open the notifications panel, and then tap Connected as a media devic e → Media device (M TP) . T ap Camer a (PTP) if your comput er does not suppor t M edia T ransfer P rotoc ol (MTP) or not hav e any appr opriate driver installed .
Basics 45 Setting a PIN On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → PIN . Enter at least f our numbers, and then enter the passw ord again to v er ify it. Setting a passwor d On the Applications screen, tap Settings → My device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P asswor d .
Basics 46 • Do not turn off the computer or disconnect the USB cable while the device is upgrading . • While upgrading the devic e, do not connect other media devices to the computer .

Camera: Basic functions 52 • Rugged : This eff ec t applies a rugged effect. • Oil pastel : This eff ec t applies a pastel painting effect. • F isheye : This eff ec t blackens the edges of the frame and distor ts objects to imitate the visual effect of a fisheye lens .
Camera: Basic functions 53 Reducing camera shak e Use the Optical Image Stabiliser (OIS) option to r educe or eliminate blurriness from camera shake. If the lens has an OIS switch, set the switch to ON to use the OIS function. T ap (or → ) → → OIS (anti-shake) , and select an option.
Camera: Basic functions 54 Half-pressing the Shutt er button Pr ess the Shutter button halfway do wn to adjust the focus . The camera adjusts the focus , exposure , and white balance automatically , and the focus frame turns green. The focus fr ame turns red if not f ocused.
Camera: Basic functions 55 Keeping the subject in focus F ocusing on the subjec t may be difficult in the f ollowing conditions: • When the contr ast between the subject and background is low . F or example, the subject is wearing clothing that is similar in colour t o the background.
Camera: Basic functions 56 When taking photos in low-ligh t conditions • T ur n the flash on to take photos in lo w-light conditions. (p . 86) • Adjust the ISO sensitivity . (p . 80) When subjects are moving r apidly Use the continuous shooting option t o take photos of moving subjects.
57 C amera: S hooting modes Au to Use this to take phot os with scene modes selected automatically by the camer a. In this mode, the camera r ecognises surrounding conditions and aut omatically adjusts factors that contribute t o exposure , including the shutter speed, aper ture value , metering, and white balance .
Camera: Shooting modes 58 Exper t Use this to take phot os and videos with manual adjustment of various shooting options, including the shutter speed, aperture value , exposure value , and ISO sensitivit y . When using the standard oper ation type, tap MODE → Exper t , and select a mode.
Camera: Shooting modes 59 T ap MODE → Exper t → P , and set the desired shooting options . Pr ogram shift The prog ram shif t fea ture lets y ou adjust the combination of the shutter speed and aperture value while the camera maintains the same exposur e.
Camera: Shooting modes 60 Shutter priority mode In this mode, the camera automatically adjusts the aperture value acc ording to the shutt er speed you choose . This mode is useful for taking photos of fast-moving subjects or for creating tr acer effects in a photo .
Camera: Shooting modes 61 Using the bulb f eature Use this f eature t o shoot night scenes or the night sky . While you ar e pressing the Shutter button, the shutter is left open so you can cr eate moving ligh t effects. In manual mode, set the shutter speed to Bulb .
Camera: Shooting modes 62 Using the i-F unc tion button Pr ess the i-F unc tion button on the lens repeat edly to select an option, and then rotate the focus ring on the lens to adjust the v alue. T o confirm the adjustment, tap an empty area on the screen or half-pr ess the Shutter button.
Camera: Shooting modes 63 • One T ouch AF/MF : Change the focus mode . • AF Lock : Lock the f ocus by half-pressing the Shutter button t o focus on the subject, and then tapping the shor tcut icon. • One T ouch WB : Manually set white balance by aiming the lens at a whit e sur face , and then pressing the Shutter butt on.
Camera: Shooting modes 64 Best photo Use this to take multiple phot os in a shor t time, and then choose the best photos among them. T ap MODE → Smar t → Best photo . Pr ess the Shutter button to take multiple photos . T ap and hold thumbnails of photos to sav e, and then tap S ave .
Camera: Shooting modes 65 Best face Use this to take multiple g roup shots at the same time and combine them t o create the best possible image. T ap MODE → Smar t → Best face . Pr ess the Shutter button to take multiple photos . T o get the best shot, hold the camera steady and remain still while taking photos.
Camera: Shooting modes 66 V ignette+ Use this to highlight the c entre of the photo by darkening the edges. T ap MODE → Smar t → V ignette+ . Landscape Use this to take phot os of blue sk ies and landscapes with richer colours. T ap MODE → Smar t → Landscape .

Camera: Shooting modes 73 • Hold the camera steady and r emain still while taking photos. • When taking photos of an objec t and backgr ound with similar colours, the camer a may not r ecognise all of the mov ement.

Camera: Shooting modes 76 F irew orks Use this to take phot os of fireworks . T ap MODE → Smar t → F ireworks . The image may appear blurry due to the slow shutter speed when the camera takes photos. Make sur e to use a tripod. Light tr ace Use this to take phot os of the light trailing in low-ligh t conditions.

Camera: Shooting options and settings 80 • When taking a photo , if the appropriate exposur e value cannot be decided, use the AE BKT option to take three c onsecutive photos with differ ent exposure values. • T aking photos with higher exposure values may r esult in blurr y photos due to the slower shutt er speed.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 81 • Increase the ISO sensitivity in places where flash use is prohibit ed. Y ou can take a clear photo by setting a high ISO sensitivity without having t o secure more ligh t. • Use the noise reduction fea ture to r educe the visual noise that can appear on photos of a high ISO sensitivity .
Camera: Shooting options and settings 82 • Colour t emperature : Use this to manually adjust the c olour temperatur e of the light source . Colour temperatur e is a measurement in degrees Kelvin tha t indicates the specific type of light source .
Camera: Shooting options and settings 83 When taking a photo , if the appropriate whit e balance option cannot be decided, use the WB BKT option to take three c onsecutive photos with differ ent white balance settings. C ustomising preset white balanc e options Adjust the c olour for the pr eset light sourc es.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 84 Driv e Use this option to set the shooting method . Continuous or burst shots are r ecommended for shooting the rapid motion of fast moving subjects, such as racing cars . T ap → → Drive , and select an option.

T ap → → Display , and select an option. • Normal : The camera displa ys basic shooting information on the screen. • Histogram : The camera displa ys the histogram on the screen.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 86 Sav e as User mode Use this to sa ve the curren t settings as your own shooting mode . T ap → → Save as U ser mode . F lash T o take a r ealistic photo of a subject, the amount of light should be constant. When the light source v aries, you can use a flash and supply a c onstant amount of light.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 87 • 2nd Curtain : Use this to fir e the flash just before the shutter closes . The camera takes a photo of a subject later in an action sequence clearly . Ball moving direction • Keep the flash retracted when not in use to a void damage.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 88 AF mode Use this option to select a focus mode appr opr iate t o the subject. If the lens has an AF/MF switch, you must set the switch t o select the focus mode that you requir e. Set the switch to AF t o selec t either Single AF or Con tinuous AF .
Camera: Shooting options and settings 89 AF Ar ea Use this option to change the positions of the f ocus area. Generally , cameras f ocus on the nearest subject.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 90 • T racking AF : Use this to track and aut omatically focus on your subject, even when the subject is moving or when you change the shooting composition. • T rack ing a subject may fail in the following conditions: – The subject is too small.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 91 Qualit y Use this option to select a higher photo quality for better phot os. Selecting a higher photo quality also increases the file size . T ap → → Quality , and select an option. The camera sa ves photos in either the jpg or r aw file f ormat.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 92 T imer Use this option f or delayed-time shots . T ap → → T imer , and select an option. Pr ess the Shutter button to star t the timer . The camera takes photos after a specified length of time. P ress the Shutter button to canc el the timer .
Camera: Shooting options and settings 93 Link AE to AF P oint Use this option to measur e the exposure value of the focus ar ea. When this option is on, the camera automatically sets an optimal e xposure by calcula ting the brightness of the focus area.
Camera: Shooting options and settings 94 • This f eature ma y not function properly in the following c onditions: – When you mo ve the camera to follo w a moving subjec t. – If the camera is shak ing too much. – When the shutter speed is slo w (for example , when tak ing photos in low-light conditions).
Camera: Shooting options and settings 95 DMF Use the Direct Manual F ocus (DMF) option to adjust the focus manually by r otating the focus ring after achieving the focus by half-pr essing the Shutter button. T ap → → DMF , and turn this option on or off .
Camera: Shooting options and settings 96 • Adobe RGB : Adobe RGB is used f or commercial printing and has a larger colour r ange than sRGB. Its wider range of colours helps you t o easily edit photos on a comput er . Note that individual pr ograms ar e generally compatible with a limit ed number of colour spaces.

100 Media Galler y Use this application to view images and videos . T ap Galler y on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 101 V iewing images using the motion featur e When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Media 102 • Rename : Rename the file. • Set as : Set the image as wallpaper or a contact image. • Settings : Change the Galler y settings. Modifying images When viewing an image, tap → Edit . Undo and redo the last action. Save changes .
Media 103 Applying filter eff ec ts T ap Effect , select a filter effect at the bottom of the screen, dr ag the slider to left or right if requir ed, and then tap . Adjusting a portrait photo T ap P or trait , select a por trait effect at the bottom of the screen, drag the slider t o lef t or right if requir ed, and then tap .
Media 104 Deleting images Use one of the f ollowing methods: • In a folder , tap → Selec t item , select images by tick ing, and then tap . • When viewing an image, tap .
