5 Section 1: Getti ng Star ted This section hel ps you to quickly start u sing your phone. Understanding this User Manual The sections of th is manual gene rally follow the feat ures of your phone.
Getting Started 6 Special T ext In this manual, you’ll find text that is s et apart from the rest. These are intended to point ou t important informatio n, share quick methods for acti vating fe atures, to define terms, and more. The definitions for these methods are as follo ws: • Notes : Additional inform ation about the current topic.
7 Batter y Indicator The batter y icon in the Status Bar shows ba ttery power level. Before the batter y becomes too low to operate, the empty battery icon will flash and a tone will sound. If you continue to operate the phon e without charging, the phone will power off.
Getting Started 8 Installing and R emo ving the Batter y Installing the batter y 1. Remove the battery cover . 2. Insert the battery into the phone, aligning the g old contacts on the batter y with the gold contacts in the phone. 3. Replace the batter y cover .
9 1. Insert the USB cable into t he USB/Accessory port. 2. Connect the USB cable to the charging head. 3. Plug the charging head into a standard AC power outlet. 4. When charging is complet e, unplug the charging head from the power outlet and remo ve the USB cable from the phone.
Getting Started 10 Setup W izard The first time you turn your phone on, the Setup wizard will prompt you to customize your phone. Follow the prompts to set. Y ou can also access Setup wizard at any time: From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Setup wizard .
11 Vo i c e m a i l All unanswered calls t o your phone are sent to voicemail, even if your phone is turned of f, so you’ll want to set up your voicemail and personal greeting as soon as you activate your phone. For more information, s ee “V oicemail” on pa ge 63.
Getting Started 12 T ask Man ager Y our phone can run apps simult aneously , with some running in the background. Use T ask manager to see apps running on your phone, end running apps to extend battery life, uninstall apps, and se e how memory is used by applica tions.
13 Installing a Memor y Car d 1. Open the memory ca rd cover . 2. With the gold contacts facing do wn, slide the memory card into the slot, pushing gently until it clicks into place.
Getting Started 14 Locking the phone By default, the phone lock s automati cally when the screen times out. – or – Lock the phone by pressing the Power/Lock Key . Tip : When the phone is locked with a personal screen lock, the Emergency call feature is available on the lock screen, to allow emergency calls even w hile the phone is locked.

17 Side Views • Volume Key : From the Home screen, press to adjust master volume. Du ring calls or media pl ayback, pres s to adjust volume. Press to mute th e ringtone of an incoming call. • Memory Card Slot : Install an optional memor y card (not included), for additional storage of files.

Understanding Y our Phone 20 Home screen The Home screen consists of th e Home page, plus pages that extend beyond the display width to pr ovide more space for adding shortcuts, widgets and folders. Slide your finger horizontally across the scr een to scroll to the left or right side pages.
21 Adding and r emo ving Home screen pages Y ou can customize the Home s creen to inc lude up to the seven default pages, and set th e page order . 1. From the Home screen, touch Menu ➔ Edit page . – or – Pinch the Home screen, then choose Add to Ho me screen to add a page.

23 Using Notifications While viewing Notifications, use these options: • T ouch a notification to la unch the a pp or feature. • Clear : T ouch to clear all notifications • Settings : Control popular settings. Slid e your finger right and left to access all the settings.
Understanding Y our Phone 24 Device P ower Critica l : Batter y has very little power remaining. Charge immedia tely . GPS Locati on Active : One or more GPS location services are active. See “L ocation services” on page 109. No Network : No wireless network is a vailable.
25 Silent mode : All sounds except media and alarms are silenced, and Vibrate is not active. See “Mute” on page 102. Vib rate : Vibrate Silent mode is active. See “ Mute” on page 102. Music Playing : Music is playing, but the app is in the backgr ound.

29 Entering Symbols and Numbers T o enter common sy mbols, touch t o switch to symbol mode, then touch the corr esponding key . T o enter les s-common symbols, touch ➔ , then touch the corresponding key . Enter numbers by touch ing , then touching the numb er keys.

31 Copying or Cutting T e xt 1. T ouch and hold on the text you want to select to display the selector cursors. T ouch and drag the cursors to highlight t he text you want to cut or copy. T ouch Cut or Copy from the pop- up text editing menu. Pasting Copied or Cut T ext 1.
Calling 32 Section 3: Calling Making Calls Y our phone offers multi ple ways to make calls: • Use the touch screen Keypad to enter the phone number or speed dial number . • Call a contact from Contacts . • Call a contact from Fav ori tes . • Return a call, or call a recent caller , from Recent .
33 Making Calls from Contacts A contact is an entr y that you have created to store the name, numbers, and other info rm ation for people or groups of interest. For more information, s ee “Contacts” on page 45. 1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts .
Calling 34 Making Calls using Fa v orites Favorites are contacts that yo u designate as favorites by adding a Star to their contact record. For more information about creating fa vorites, see “Favorites” on page 51. 1. From the Home screen, touch Phone .
35 Ans wering Calls Y ou can answer incoming calls when the phone is locked or unlocked. T ouc h and drag Answer . Tip : T o silence the ringto ne for an incoming call, press the Vol um e K ey .
Calling 36 Recent calls When you place, ans wer , or miss a call, a record of the call is saved in the Recent calls. Accessing R ecent calls From the Home screen, touch Phone ➔ Recent . Sending Messages using R ecent calls Create a new message, with the phone number from a recent call entered in t he T o list .
37 Managing R ecent calls Review and delete call recor ds. Deleting Recent call recor ds 1. From the Home screen, touch Phone ➔ Recent . 2. While viewing Recent calls, touch Menu ➔ Delete . 3. T ouch call records to mar k them for deletion, or touch Select a ll .
Calling 38 Set reject messages Create and mana ge text messages to send to callers when rejecting incoming calls. Messag es you create here are available fr om the incoming call screen when you use the Reject with messa ge option. 1. From the Home screen, touch Phone .

43 Section 4: Contacts and Accounts Accounts Y our phone pro vides the abilit y to synchronize information, from a variety of accounts, including Email, Facebook, Google, and your Samsung account. Depending on the account, you can choose to synchronize your c alendar , contacts, and other types of content.

47 Choosing Contacts to Display 1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts . 2. T ouch Menu ➔ Contacts to display : • Choose All conta cts to show all contacts. • Choose an account to only display contacts from that account. • T ouch Phone to show only show con tacts saved to the phone.

49 J oining Contacts Y our phone can synchronize wit h multiple accounts, including Google, Corporate, and other providers, plus social networking sites like Facebook. When you synchronize contacts from these accounts with your phone, you may ha ve multiple contacts for one person.

51 Backing Up Contacts Use Backup Assistant Plus to sa ve a copy of your Contacts to a secure web site. For more information, s ee “Backup Assistant Plus” on page 122. 1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts . 2. T ouch Menu ➔ Backup . 3. Follow the prompts to log in to your Backup Ass istant account.

Messaging 56 T ext and Multimedia Messaging Y our phone can send and re ceive text and multimedia messages. Creating and Sending Messages 1. From the Home screen, touch Messaging .
57 Managing Messages Messages you send and receive to the same contact, number or address are grouped together as a “thread”, so you can see all the message s you exchanged with a recipient in one place, like a conversa tion. 1. From the Home screen, touch Messaging .
Messaging 58 • General setti ngs : – Restore messages : Restore saved messages to your inbox. – Delete old messages : When enabled, messages are automatically erased when sto rage reaches default limits. When disabled, the phone will prompt you to delete old me ssages to make room.
59 • Emergency m essage settings : – Emergency alerts : This device is designed to rece ive Wireless Emergency Alerts fro m the Com mercial Mobile Alert Service (CMAS), including Presidential Alerts, Imminent Ale rts (Severe or Extreme), and AMBER Alerts (missing p ersons).
Messaging 60 Emergency Aler ts This device is des igned to receive Wireless Emergency Alerts from the Commercial Mobile Alert Ser vice (CMAS). Emergency Alerts are geographically-targeted, and alert customers of imminent threa ts to their safety within their area.
61 Deleting Email Acc ounts 1. From the Home screen, select Apps ➔ Email . 2. T ouch Menu ➔ Settings ➔ . 3. Select email account(s) for deleti on, then touch Delete . Syncing Email Accounts Syncing refreshes your phone with the acc ount’ s servers.
Messaging 62 Composing and Sendin g Email 1. From the Home screen, select Apps ➔ Email . 2. If you have multiple accounts set up, ch oose an account from the menu at the top of the screen. 3. T ouch , then touch fields to enter recipients and the email text.
63 R efreshing Y our Gmail Account Syncing refreshes your phone with the acc ount’ s servers. When you set up an email account, you can choose whether the account syncs in the backgrou nd, or manually . From the Home screen, select Apps ➔ Gmail ➔ Sync .
Messaging 64 Clearing V oicemail Notifications When you hav e new voicemail, your phone alerts you by displaying an icon in the Status bar , and, depending on your settings, by playing sound and vibr ation. If you want to remove the icon from the Sta tus bar , use the Clear notifications option .
65 Section 6: Applications Managing A pplica tions Apps disp lays al l applicatio ns installed on your phone, including apps you download and install. From Apps, you can change the way apps appear on the screen, uninstall apps you’ve downloaded, and shar e apps with friends.
Applications 66 Customizing the Apps Screens Choosing a view By default, app icons appear in Grid view . Y ou can change the view to list view. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps .
67 Calcula tor Use your phone’ s Calculator to perform mathematical calculations. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Calculator . Calendar Record events and appointments to manage your schedu le. Tip : A Calendar widget is avail able in Widgets.

69 Galler y After taking a picture, review th e picture in Gallery , and use options to modify or share the picture. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Camera . 2. T ouch Gallery, th en use these options: • “Pinch” the sc reen to zoom in or out, or double-tap to zoom all the way in or out.
Applications 70 – Smile shot : T ouch the Camera button to focus on th e subject’ s face. If a smil e is detected, th e picture is taken au tomatically . • Effects : Apply an effect to pictures. • Settings – Edit shortcuts : Choose shortcuts to app ear on the toolbar .
71 R ecording Vi deo s Use the Camera to record video. Important! Do not take videos of people without their permission. Do not take videos in places where cameras a re not allowed. Do not take videos in places where you ma y interfere with another person’ s privacy .

Select Off, After playing, After 15 mins, 30 mins, 1 hr , 1 hr 30 mins, or 2 h rs. •S e t t i n g s : Configure the Play speed, So undAlive, and Su btitles. – Play speed : Use the slider to adjust th e playback speed.
73 – Resolution : Choose a si ze for the image. – White balance : Choose a setting for the light source. – Guidelines : Enable or disable an on-scr een grid to aid in ph oto composition.
Applications 74 Downl oads View and manage files and othe r items you download to your phone. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Downloads . 2. T ouch an item to open it (i f an ap pro pr iate app lic ati on is installed.) Note: Applications you downlo ad in Google Play™ Store are managed in Play Store, and will not appear in Downloads.
75 Sharing pictures and video Y ou can share pi ctures and videos via Email, Messaging, Bluetooth or popular sharing servi ces. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Gallery . 2. T ouch an album to di splay thumbnails, then select items for sharing: • T o select an entire album, touch Menu ➔ Select album while viewing albums.
Applications 76 Gmail Send and receive emails via Gmail, Google’s web-based email. For more information, see “Gmail” on page 62. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Gmail . Google Use Google Search to search the Web. 1. From the Home screen, touch the Google Widget.
77 Google+ Google+ makes messaging a nd sharing with your friends a lot easier . Set up Circ les of friends, visit the Strea m for updates from your Circ les, use Messenger , or use Instant Upload to automatically upload photos and videos from your phone to your private album on Google+.
Applications 78 Selecting items on a page While browsing pages, use gest ures and menus to navigate: • T ouch an item to select it. • T ouch a hyperlink to follow the link. • T ouch and hold a hyperlink for options. Entering a URL Access a website quickly by ente ring the URL.
79 Local Google Places is now Google Local, to use your location to help you find destinations , such as restaurants, bars, hotels, attractions, A TMs and gas sta tions, or you can enter a location. Note: Y ou must enable location ser vices to use Local, and some features require Standalone or Go ogle location servic es.

81 Music Player Music Player plays songs stored on yo ur phone or an installed memor y card. 1. From the Home screen, select Apps ➔ Music Player . 2. Music Player scans for songs stored in phone memor y , or on an installed memor y card and displays your songs on the All , Playlists , Albums , Artists , Music Square , and Folders tabs.
Applications 82 Adding a song to a playlist 1. From the Home screen, select Apps ➔ Music Player . 2. T ouch and hold a song, then choose Add to playlist from the pop-up menu. 3. T ouch a playlist to add the se lected song to it, or touch Create playlist to create a new playlist and add the selected so ng to it.
83 My Files Find, view and manage files stored on an installed memor y card. If the file is associated with an application on your phone, you can launch th e file in the application. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ My Files . 2. T ap a folder a nd swipe your finger on the screen to browse files.
Applications 84 Phone Place calls, review recent calls, or dial a number to send a message. For more information, see “Calling” on page 32. From the Home screen, touch Phone . Play Books Google Books is now Google Play™ Books. Discovering your favorite books and authors has never be en easier .
85 Play Store Android Market is now Google Play™ Store, wher e all your favorite books, movies, apps, and games are all in one place that’ s accessible from the W eb and your Android de vice. Y ou’l l need to have a Google acco unt set up on your phone to download a new a pplication.

87 V oice Recorder Record your voice or other sounds, and share recor dings via Bluetooth, Messaging, Ema il, Wi-F i Direct, or Gmail. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Voice Recorder . Vo i c e S e a r c h Use voice commands to sear ch the web with Google .
Connections 88 Section 7: Connection s W i-Fi Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technolog y that provides access to local area networks . Wi-Fi communication requires acces s to an existing Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi networks can be Open (unsecured), or Secured (requiring you to provide login credentials).
89 Scanning and Connecting to a Wi-Fi Netw ork When you turn on Wi-Fi, your phone searches for available Wi-Fi connections, then displays them. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings . 2. T ouch Wi-Fi to turn Wi-Fi On. 3. When your phone completes a scan, touch a Wi-F i network to connect.
Connections 90 Bluetooth Note: For Hearing Aid Compatibility Information, see pa ge 148. Bluetooth is a short-range w ireless communications technolog y for exchanging info rmation over a distance of about 30 feet. Y ou don’t need to line up the devices to send information with Bluetooth.
91 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings ➔ Bluetoo th . 2. T ouch Bluetooth to turn Bluetooth On. 3. Activate the target device’s discoverable mode.
Connections 92 Nearby de vices Share files with nearby devices using DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standards, o ver Wi-F i. T o share with nearby devices , you must connect to a Wi-Fi network. The device s you wish to share files with must also be connected to the same Wi-Fi network and must support DLNA.
