Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phon e by first configuring your hard ware, activa ting your ser vice, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessar y to inst all both the ba tter y and SIM into their corresponding internal co mpartments.
6 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Re-orient the card back into the slot if the SIM is not detected. Installing the M emor y Card Y our phone also supports the use of a memory card (microSD™) for data storage of such things as data, music, pictures, and video files.
Getting Started 7 3. Place the batter y co ver onto the back o f the phone and press down (1). 4. Press down on the bottom of the phone (2) until you hear a light c lick. Note: Make sure the batter y is properly installed before switching on the phone.
8 Important!: Verify that the handset battery is installed prior to connection . If the batter y is not properly installed and the wall charger is connected, the handset may power off and on continuously , preventing proper operation.
Getting Started 9 Switching the Phone On or Off 1. Press and hold or until the phone switches on. The phone launches the activati on splash screen and then proceeds to search for the network. Once the network has been found, you can ma ke or receive call s.

16 Using the Multitasking Menu This key ( ) launches the Multitask menu t hat can be activa ted from within a ny acti ve window or page on the phone. There is no need to st op w hat you are doing, if you quickly want to jump out and activa te another common feature.
Understanding Y our Phone 17 When any Java applica tion, such as a game, is paused, suspended, or minimized, the Mult itask screen is modified to inc lude the Java application. I n the example below , the bowling game has been paused. To u c h t h e Up or Down arrows to scroll up or down.
18 Section 3: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu na vig ation for your phone. The a897 has done away with the n eed for navigation whee ls or keypads. The a897 is complete ly navigable by either an on-screen touch or scroll. • T ouching an on-scree n option ac tivates the f eature.
Menu Navigation 19 Navigatin g T hr oug h the Mai n Menus The a897 originally has three main menus but y ou can add two more main menus for a total of five. Some i cons can be deleted and replaced with new icons. 1. From the Idle screen , touch . Main menu 1 is displayed.
20 The Menu Items scre en is displayed. 4. T ouch one of t he Menu Items to have t he icon for that feature or applica tion added to your menu. Default items that already have icons on a menu will be grayed out . 5. Continue to add Icons that you want on a main menu.

22 Note: Scrolling requires tha t you press firmly on the screen then drag. When scrolling through a list make sure not to touch or press individual entries on the list as this will open the list entry .

T o uch t he Alarm Time field and then adjust the hour and minutes values by entering ma nually (Keypad tab) or using either the + /- buttons or by quickly sliding your fingertip over the num bers (Jog tab). W idgets The Widget bar provides quick access to mini-programs (widgets).

26 Sound Profile : allows you to qui ckly modify your current sound Profile. For more informat ion, refer to “Sound Profiles” on page 52. Blueto oth : F rom this application you can activate Bluetooth and configure it so other Bluetooth devices can see your device by name.
Menu Navigation 27 W idget Bar Naviga tion Y ou can drag the widgets to the desktop (Idle Screen) to use the application or feature, then drag it back to the Widget Bar when you are finished. There are thr ee different widg et desktops you can use. Y ou can have different widgets on all three desktops.
28 Undocking Wi dgets Y ou can easily c ustomize the Widget bar by e ither keeping these mini-apps docked within the ba r itself or undocking them by dragging anywhere onto yo ur Main display screen.

Call Functions 31 Section 4: Call Functions This section describes how to make or an swer a call. It also inc ludes the features and functional it y associa ted with making or answering a c all. For more informat ion, refer to “Call Settin gs” on page 67.
32 Cor recting an Entered N umber Use the following st eps to correct a mis-ty ped entry when dialing. 1. After entering a number using the keypad. • If you make a mistake, touch to erase a si ngle chara cter . • Press and hold to erase t he enti re stri ng of nu mbers.
Call Functions 33 2. The Speed Dial screen displays sh owing the numbers 1 through 9. The number 1 is reserved for Voice Mail. 3. T ouch an unused number and the Contacts screen displays. 4. Select a c ontact to assign to the number . Y ou can also ta p on the search box and enter the f irst few letters of the name you are searching for .
34 Other A ns w ering O ptions When receiving an incoming call: • Briefly press down either volume key ( ) to mute the ring tone. – or – T o mute the ring tone when the phone is facing upwards, flip the phone ov er so that it is facing down.
Call Functions 35 Impo rtant !: When establishing a Video Share session, only the sender of the video clip can save the file. 5. The recipi ent will receive a Video Share pop-up to e ither Accept or Reje ct the V ideo Share call. They should press the Accept soft key to continue or Reject soft key to reject the invita tion.
36 Play a Video S hare R ecording During a call (while no t in a Live V ide o Sha re session) you can share a recorded vide o for the recipient . 1. T ouch More ➔ Vi de o S ha r e ➔ Recorded and then select from the av ailable f iles in your Vi d eo fo lder .
Call Functions 37 Note: If there is a voicemail sent by the same number , associa ted icons are displayed and can then be selected. 2. Scroll through t he list of misse d calls. 3. T o move to another call type, touch the call drop-down list (upper right of Calls page) and make your selecti on.
38 6. T o add additional recipients , touch the yellow rec ipients field. Insert new recipients by: • Pressing th e yell ow fiel d and t hen enter ing the number manually. • Selecting from Recent Contacts to cho ose your recipien t. • Select an entr y fr om your Contacts list.

40 • Speaker On/Off routes the phone’ s audio through either the speaker or through the earpiece. – Slide Speaker to On to route the au dio through the s peaker .
Call Functions 41 Switching Betw een Calls When you h ave an active cal l and a call o n hold, you m ay switch between the two ca lls, changing the one on hold to active and placing the other on hold.
42 Example: Y ou wish to say something to person in the room, but do not want the person on the phone to hear you. Note: If you are already in Video Share or you have a call on hold, you need to select Mute/Unmute. T o s witch the microphone of f temp oraril y during a call 1.
Call Functions 43 This feature jo ins all of t he calls you have established with your phone (both active and on ho ld) into a multi-party call. 1. Press to ans wer the first incoming cal l. 2. Press or Accept to answer the ne xt incoming call. The first call is auto ma tically put on hold.
44 Section 5: Entering T ext This section outlines ho w to select the desi red text entry mode when entering characters usin g th e QWER TY keyboard -style keypad. This section also describe s how to use the T9 predictive text entry system to reduce the number of key strokes needed to enter text.
Entering T ext 45 Changing the T ext Input Mode - K eypad There are thre e main keypad la yout keys that will change the on- screen keys w ithin the Q WERTY keypad. The avai lable T ex t Input modes are: T9 , 123Sym , and Abc . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the up per right hand corner to identify which mode you are currently in.
46 2. T ouch the T ext Input Mode button at the bottom of the screen and touch . The T9 letters will turn g reen and will appear in the upper right corner of the screen. 3. Begin typing a word. A list of word options dis plays and inc ludes a n umber indicating the words available t o chose from.

48 Using Numeric in P or tr ait Mode The Numeric mode enables you to en ter numbers into a text messag e. 䊳 T ouch the T ext Input Mode button at the bo ttom of the screen and select Numeric ( ), then touch the keys corresponding to the digits you want to en ter .

T ouch the Spac e key ( ) to create a space between letters, numbers, or symbols. Note: T o properly recognize the written characters and to prevent scratching of the LCD, do not use script.

Changing Y our Settings 59 Display and Light Settings In this menu, you can change va rious settings for the display or backlight. 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Display and Light .
60 2. T ouch and hold to eras e the current greeting messag e. 3. Use the on-screen keypad to enter a new greeting. 4. T ouch . T r ansition Effe ct Allows yo u to activat e/deactivate the def ault transition ef fect (wipe) during transitions between menu/options pages.

62 Langua g e This menu allows you to select a display language for T ext language and T ext Input mode. Cho ose from Automatic, English, Français, and Español.
Changing Y our Settings 63 Motion Detection The Motion D etection f eature can be used for muting an incoming ca ll or alarm, sett ing Snooze on an alarm, and starting and restarting a timer . 1. From Idle mode, touch ➔ Settings ➔ Phone ➔ Motion Detection .
64 unlock the SIM so you can use a different SIM card. Once you have entered the l ock code, yo u are asked to co nfirm your password. 䊳 T ouch On or Off from the Lock SIM Card field. Note: This lock code is typically the last four digits of the current phone number or can be obtained from an A T&T customer ser vice representative.

Ensure that you remove your MicroSD card if applicable as it will be erased with the Restore Phone option. Air plane Mode Airplane Mode allows you to use many of your phone’ s fea tures, such as Games, Vo ice no te, etc.

Changing Y our Settings 71 Bluet oot h Ser vi ces The Bluetooth specificati on is a protocol that describes how the short-range wireless te chnology wo rks, whereas ser vices describe the individual devi ces that are supported. These serv ices reduce the chance tha t incompatibl e devices are allowed to connect to your phone.
