Assembling 10 Inser t the RUIM card. 3 Place the RUIM card into the devic e with the gold- • coloured contacts facing down. If you do not insert a RUIM card, you can only use • your device ’ s non-net work services and some menus.
Assembling 11 Charge the batt er y Before using the device f or the rst time, you must charge the battery. Y ou can charge the device with the provided travel adapt er or by connecting the device to a PC with a PC data cable. Use only Samsung-approved char gers and cables.
Assembling 12 Plug the large end of the trav el adapter into a power 3 outlet. Y ou can use the device while it is charging, but it • may take longer to fully charge the battery . While the device is charging , the touch screen may • not f unct ion d ue to an un st abl e p ow er s upp ly .
Assembling 13 Plug one end (micro-USB) of the PC data cable into the 2 multifunction jack. Plug the other end of the PC data cable into a USB port 3 on a PC. Depending on the type of PC data cable you are using, it may take some time bef ore charging begins.
Assembling 14 Ope n the c ov er to t he mem ory car d sl ot on th e s ide o f 1 the device. Ins ert a m emo ry c ar d w ith t he gol d-c olo ur ed co nt acts 2 facing down. Push the memory card in the memory card slot until it 3 locks in place. Close the cover to the memory card slot.
Assembling 15 F ormat the memory card › Formatting y our memory card on a PC may cause incompatibilities with your device . Format the memory card only on the device. In Idle mode, select → Settings → SD card and phone storage → Unmount SD card → OK → F ormat SD card → Forma t SD card → Erase everything .
Assembling 16 Attach a hand str ap (optional) Remove the back cov er . 1 Slide a hand strap through the slot and hook it over 2 the small projection. Replace the back cover .

Getting started 23 Add or remo ve panels to the idle scr een › Y ou can add or remove panels of the idle screen to organise widgets according t o your prefer ences and needs. In Idle mode, press [ 1 ] → Edit . Y ou can also place your two ngers on the screen and pinch to switch to Edit mode .
Getting started 24 Press [ 4 ] to return to the previous scr een; Press the Home key to return to the idle screen. Y our de vic e has a bu ilt -i n m oti on se nso r tha t det ect s its orientation. If you rotate the device while using some features , the interface will automatically switch to landscape view .
Getting started 25 Use the task manager › Y our device is a multitask ing device. It can run more than one application at the same time. How ever , multitasking may cause hang-ups, freezing , memory problems, or additional power consumption. T o avoid these problems, end unnecessary programs using the task manager .
Getting started 26 Switch to Silen t mode › T o mut e or unmute your device, do one of the f ollowing: In Idle mode, open the application list and select • → Keypad and tap and hold . Open the shortcuts panel from the top of the screen and • select Silent .
Getting started 27 Set a screen lock › Y ou can lock the touch screen with an unlock pattern or password to pr event unauthorised people from using the device without your permission. Once you set a screen lock, your device will r equire • an un loc k c od e e ac h t ime y ou tu rn it on or un lo ck the touch screen.
Getting started 28 Enter a new PIN (numeric) and select 2 Continue . Enter the PIN again and select 3 OK . Set an unlock password In Idle mode, open the application list and select 1 Settings → Location and security → Set screen lock → Passw ord .
Getting started 29 Change the keyboard type › Y ou can change the keyboard type. T ap and hold the text input eld and select Input method → a keyboard type (Swype or Samsung keypad).

Getting started 35 Synchronise da ta manually › In Idle mode, open the application list and select 1 Settings → Ac counts and sync . Select an account. 2 Press [ 3 ] → Sync now . Y our device will start synchronising the data you set f or synchronisation.
Communication 36 C ommunication Calling Learn to use calling functions, such as making and answering calls, using options available during a call or customising and using call-related f eatures. Make and answer a call › Y ou can use the buttons or the touch screen when you make, accept, end , or reject calls.
Communication 37 Reject a call When a call comes in, drag left until it reaches the dot. The caller will hear a busy tone. Call an international number In Idle mode, open the application list and select 1 → Keypad , and tap and hold 0 to insert an international call prex.
Communication 38 T o open the phonebook, press [ • ] → C ontacts . T o add a memo , press [ • ] → Memo . Vie w and dial missed calls › Y our device will display calls you have missed. T o dial the number of a missed call, open the shortcuts panel and select the missed call notication.
Communication 39 Select 2 Call f orwarding → a condition. Enter a number to which calls will be forwarded and 3 select OK . Y our setting will be sent to the network . Communication 40 Select a log to view its details. 3 Fr om the detail view , you can dial the number , send a message to the number or add the number to the phonebook. Messaging Learn to creat e and send text (SMS) or multimedia (MMS) messages, and view or manage messages you hav e sent or received .
Communication 41 Select contacts and selec t 3 Add . Select 4 T ap to c ompose and enter your message text. T o insert emoticons, pr ess [ ] → Insert smiley . Select 5 → an option and add an item. Y ou can selec t a le from the le list or create a new photo, video , or sound.

Communication 43 Add a label to a message Fr om the Inbox screen, tap and hold a message. 1 Select 2 Change labels . Select a label to add and select 3 OK . Communication 44 Send an email message › In Idle mode, open the application list and select 1 Email → an email account. Press [ 2 ] → C ompose . Select 3 Contacts . Y ou can enter an email address manually or select one from the logs or contact groups by selecting another option.
Communication 45 Fr om the message view , use the following options: T o r eply to the message, press [ • ] → Reply . T o f orward the message to other people, press [ • ] → Forward . T o delet e the message, press [ • ] → Delete .

Entertainment 48 Entertainment Camera Learn how to capture and view phot os and videos. Y ou can t ake ph ot os at r eso lu tio ns up to 2 048 x 15 36 pix e ls (3.2 megapixels) and videos at resolutions up t o 320 x 240 pixels. T o use the camer a, you must rst insert a memor y card.

Resolution Change the resolution option. White balance Adjust the colour balance acc ording to lighting conditions.
Entertainment 53 Record a video › In Idle mode, open the application list and select 1 Camera . Rotate the device anti-clockwise to landscape view. 2 Select 3 to switch to the camcor der . Aim the lens at the subject and make any necessary 4 adjustments.
Entertainment 54 Number F unction 5 Switch to the camera. 6 Record a video . 7 View the video you r ecorded last. Press the V olume key to zoom in or out. 5 Select 6 to start recording. Select 7 to stop recor ding. The video is saved automa tically . The camera may not be able to pr operly record videos to a memory card with a slow transfer speed.
Entertainment 55 Option F unction Eects Apply a special eect, such as sepia or black and white tones. Video quality Set the quality level for your videos.
