Getting Started 4 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to st art using your Samsung Byline™ phone by activating your service, setting up your Voicemail, or getting an understanding of how this manual is put together .
5 1. Insert the top end of the batt ery first, matching the gold contacts on t he inside of th e battery to those on t he phone. 2. Press lightly on the bottom end of the battery do wn into the phone until it slips into place. 3. Press lightly down on the top of the battery cover .
Getting Started 6 Charging the Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechar geable standard Li-Ion battery . Only use Samsu ng-approved ch arging devices a nd batteries. Samsung accessories are designed to maximize battery life. Use of other accessori es may invalida te your warrant y and may cause damage.

Understanding Y our Phone 8 Section 2: Understanding Y our Phone This section outlines so me key features of your phone. It also describes the screen format and th e icons that will be display ed when the phone is in use.
9 3. Speakerphone / Push-T o-T alk (PTT) Key — In Standby mode, pressing this key launches the ChatLINK screen, enabling PTT operat ion. In Standby and Call modes, pressing and holding this key toggles your ph one in/o ut of Speakerphone mode. In PTT mode, pressing and holding this key enables you to talk (release to listen).

11 Right Soft K ey Some functions of the Right soft key ( ) are as follows: • In standby mode, press the @metro key ( ) to launch the @metro screen. • When the Right soft key function is Options , press the Option s (right) soft key ( ) and a pop-up menu appears.
Understanding Y our Phon e 12 Understanding the Display Screen 1. The top line of your phone’ s disp lay contains icons that indicate ne twork status, battery po wer , signal strength, connection type, and more. 2. The center portion of the display shows information such as call progress information, messages, and photos.
13 Backlights Backlights illuminate the display and the keypad. When you press any key or open the phone , the backlights co me on. They go off when no keys are p ressed within a period of time set in the Backlight menu.
Understanding Y our Phon e 14 Receiv e Messages in Standby Mode Y ou can receive messages in sta ndby mode. An alert tone sounds and a notification message appe ars in the display when a new message arrives. The following call message options appear: • Vie w N ow — This selection allows you to view the messages now .
15 T o enter Silent Mode: 䊳 In standby mode, pr ess and hold . “ Entering Silent Mode ” briefly appears in the display and your phone returns to standby mode. T o e xit Silent Mode: 䊳 While in Silent mode and st andby mode, press and hold . “ Exit Silent Mode ” briefly appears in the display and your phone retur ns to standby mode.
Call Functions 16 Section 3: Call Functions This section provides procedur es for making and answering calls. This section also describe s features, su ch as call lo gs and call timers, that help you make calls an d mana ge your cal l time. Making a Call 1.
17 • 2-Sec Pause — A 2-second pau se after which d ialing resumes. •W a i t — A hard pau se (waits for inp ut from you) . 3. Use the Up/Down navigation or arrow keys to highlight the desired pause. 4. Press to enter the highlighted pause into the number sequence.
Call Functions 18 V oice Dialing The voice recog nition capabilit i es of your Byline phone are exceptional du e to advance d, speaker -independent technology . This means you do not need to “t rain” you r phone to understand your voice. Y ou can use your voice in a na tural manner to dial numbers.
19 • “ Wor k ” • “ Mobile ” Voice Dial dials the s pecified num ber . Dialing a Number T o dial a number using V oice Di al, do the following : 1. In standby mode, press and hold . “Say a Command” appears in the display and is pronounced through the speaker .
Call Functions 20 • Y ou answer the ca ll. • The calling party ends the call. • The call is sent to voicema il. Call Notif icatio n Features Y our phon e notifies you of a call in a varie ty of ways. • Eight ring volume settings: Ringer Off , Vi br a t e , Low , Low/Medium , Medium , Medium/High , High , or Vibrate/High .
21 Call Waiting If you’re on a call, your phone beeps when another call is incoming. Contact your Wirele ss Carrier for availabi lity . 1. Press to connect and ask the calling party to remain on the line. 2. Press and the second caller is placed on hold and you’re returned to the original caller .
Call Functions 22 3. Within the above menu list, do one of the following: • Use the Navigation key to highlight a men u or feature. Press to open the high lighted menu or to activate the h ighlighted feature.
23 •V i e w T i m e r — Call T imer screen appears in the display listing the number and typ es of calls and the ir total durations. (Fo r more information, refer to “Call Timer” on page 23.) 5. Use the navigation keys to highli ght an option.
Call Functions 24 Note: Call timer is not for bi lling purposes. 1. In standby mode, press Menu ➔ Calls ➔ Call T imer . The Call T imer screen appears in the display wi th the first timer in the list highlighted.
25 2. T o reset a timer other than Lifetime Data Cou nter , use the Up/Down navigation keys to highlight the timer yo u want to reset an d press t he Reset soft key . 3. T o reset all timers except Lifetime Data Counter , press the Reset All soft key .
Menu Navigation 26 Section 4: Menu Na viga tion This section explains the menu navi gation for your phone. It also inclu des an outline o f all the available menus associated wi th your phone. Menu Naviga tion Access the menus and sub-menus in your phone u sing the Navigation key ( ) and soft keys ( or ), or use a shortcut.
27 Section 5: Entering T e xt This section outlines how to sele ct the de sired t e xt entry mode when entering characters using the phone keypad. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entry system t o reduce the number of key stro kes needed to enter text.
Entering T ext 28 Using T9 ® Mode T9 Word recognizes commonly used word s for the numeric sequence of key presse s and inserts the word into your message. T9 Word is much faster tha n the traditi onal method of text entry (Abc) and requires only one key pre ss per letter of the word that you’re spelling.
29 Entering Symbols Enter symbols such as “@ ” or “%” into a text message. 1. While composing a text messa ge, press the Left soft key , use the Navigation ke y to highlight Symbols , then press . The first of three symbol s creens a ppear s in the display .

The Find screen appears in the display with the Go T o field highlighted, followed by the first few names in y our Contacts list.

Use the Navigation key to hi ghlight the number type that matches your new entry , then press . 5. Use the keypad to enter a n ame to associ ate with the Contacts entry .

@Metro 44 Section 7: @ Metro With Mobile Shop, you can down load full featu red applications over the air in cluding games, personaliz ed ring tones , pictures, and more. Y ou can send and receiv e instant mess ages and email, or browse the web to catch up on all the latest news.

@Metro 46 R estoring Apps Disabled apps can be quickly restor ed at no additional purchase cost. T o restore an app, run the a pplication you wa nt to restore from the Main Menu. Y ou will be guided through the restoration process. Expir ed Apps Apps that were purchased based on the number of uses or time expire.
47 Section 8: Messages This section explains ho w to send or receive diff erent types of messages. This section also describes the features and function ality associ at ed with messaging. Types of Messages Y our phone is able to send an d receive T ext messages to compatible phones and devices.

51 Managing Outbox Messages 1. Fro m t he Messages menu, select Outbox . Y our list of sent messages appear in the display . 2. Highlight a message, then press Erase to remove the highlighted message from the Outbox .
Messages 52 • Edit Send T o — Change , add, or rem ove recipien ts from th is message. • Add Quick T ext — In sert pre-compo sed text into your me ssage text. •S a v e A s D r a f t — Save th e message t o your Drafts box . • Priority Level — Choose High or Normal .
53 • Listen Now — Calls your vo ice mailbox and allows you to li sten to your messages. • Listen Later — Returns you to standb y mode where you can later choose to call your mailbox and review your messages. Highlight the desired option, then press .
Messages 54 Gen eral M ess age S ett ings 1. In standby mode, press Menu ➔ Messages ➔ Msg Settings ➔ General . The following opti ons appear in the display: •A u t o S a v e — Choose whether you r messages are saved automatically when yo u exit them ( On , Off , Promp t ).

MetroWEB 56 Section 9: MetroWEB This section outlines how to la unch MetroWEB, how to navigate to other pages on the web, an d how the keys on the keypad a re used with the web application.
57 MetroWEB soft keys At the bottom of the Me troWEB di splay is a bar that contains browser commands. The Left and Right soft keys are used to execute the browser commands that appear in their respective corners of the display .
Voice SVC 58 Section 10: V oice SVC This section explains how you can use and customize y our phone’ s V oiceSignal voic e recognition feature. V oice SV C Options Y our Byline phone includes Voic eSignal, state-of-the-art voice recognition soft ware that lets you use your voice to dial numb ers, access your Contacts list, and open T ools.
59 – @metro – MetroWeb – VoiceSVC – My Contents – To o l s – Settings • Check — Lets you say a single comm and (such as “ Status ”) to verify your phone's: Status , Signal , Network , Battery , or My phone # . 2. Speaking c learly , say the co mmand that you want to use.

Use the Up and Down naviga tion keys to adjust the selected Se nsitivity se tting incre mentally betw een Reject More spoken commands or names and Reject Less spoken com mands or names. 3. Press OK or to accept the new setting. Press to discard the new sett ing and return to th e Voice Settings menu.
61 • If you need to re -record, say “ No .” If you say “No, ” the phone prompts you to pronounce the digits again. Wait for the beep and then say the digits. My Contents 64 •E r a s e — Erase t he highlighted ring tone. •R e n a m e — Change t he file name for the highlighted ringtone. • Ringtone Info — Shows the title, s ize, type, and date for the file. • Send Via Bluetooth — Send the file via Bluetooth.
65 Section 12: T ools This section explains how you can use your phone’ s Personal Information Manager (PIM) functions to view today’ s calendar , schedule appointments, set an alarm, perform simple ma th calculations, and more. 71 When an Alarm Sounds An animated al arm clock appears in the display and an alert sounds when the specified time for the alarm arrives. • T o silence the alarm, press . • If the alarm was set as a Daily alarm, the alarm icon remains in the top of the display .

Change Lock The default lock code is generally the last four d igits of your phone number . It is advi sable to change the default lock code to a secret code for security purposes.

Press to place the ca ll. Reset Phone Reset Phone returns all setup parame ters (except for the Contacts entries) to thei r factor y default values.
