Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phon e by first configuring your hard ware, activa ting your ser vice, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessar y to install both the ba tter y and SIM into their corresponding internal co mpartments.
6 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Re-orient the card back into the slot. Installing the M emor y Card Y our phone als o supports the use of a memory card (microSD™) for data storage of such things as data, music, pictures, and video files.
Getting Started 7 3. Replace the ba tter y cover onto the ba ck of the phone (1). 4. While applying pressure, slide the top p ortion towards the camera area (2) until yo u hear a light click. Note: Make sure the batter y is properly installed before switching on the phone.
8 Important!: Verify that the handset battery is installed prior to connection . If the batter y is not properly installed and the wall charger is connected, the handset may power off and on continuously , preventing proper operation.

18 Section 3: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu na vig ation for your phone. The a887 has done away with the n eed for navigation whee ls or keypads. The a887 is completely na vigable by either an onscreen touch or scroll. • T ouching a n onscreen opti on act ivates t he feat ure.
Menu Navigation 19 Openi ng an Appli cation 䊳 T ap the associa ted onscreen ico n. • Press to exit fr om the curre nt menu and retu rn to the previ ous screen. • Press to exit from the cur rent location/functio n, cancel your input and return to the Idle screen.
20 Note: Scrolling requires tha t you press firmly on the screen then drag. When scrolling through a list make sure not to touch or press individual entries on the list as this will open the list entry . Accessing the Phone’s Ma in Men u Once you display a menu list, ta pping an item causes different functions, depending on its function.
Menu Navigation 21 Scrolling T hrough Field Entries Some scre ens will ask you to assig n a value to an onscre en field by either touching the up/down selection arrows or by quickly sliding through these values b y using your fingerti p. An exa mple of these ac tions can be fo und on the Al arm page.

Menu Navigation 23 Photo F avorites : displays the Cont acts F avorites list. Y ou can us e the pull-down Contacts menu to select all Cont acts and Groups. • Drag and drop the Photo Favorites onto the desktop to view the contacts by either Favorites , Groups, or all Contacts.
24 Photo : allows you to v iew the list o f photos downloaded from the web server , received in messag es, or taken by th e camera. Y ou can then assign th e image as the c urrent wallpaper . • For more information, refer to “Using the Camera” on page 92.
Menu Navigation 25 W idget Bar Navigatio n Y ou can drag the widgets to the d e sktop to use the application or feature, then drag it ba ck to the Widget Bar when you are finished . Note: Many widgets can be used directly from the widget bar without dragging them onto the screen (ex: Bluetooth and Alarms).
26 R ear r anging Widg et s Y ou can also customize the Wid get bar by arranging the location of your current widgets. This ca n help you place your frequently used (favorite) widgets at the top of the l ist.

Entering T ext 39 Section 5: Entering T e xt This section outlines how to sele ct the desired text entry mode when entering characters using the QWER TY keyboard-style keypad. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entr y system to reduce the nu mber of ke y strokes needed to enter text .
40 Changing the T e xt Input Mode - K eyboar d There are three main k e yboard la yout keys that will change the onscreen keys within the QWERT Y keyboard. The available T ext Input modes are: T9 , 123Sym , and Abc . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the uppe r right han d corner to identify which mode you are currently in.

44 Changing the T ext Input Mod e - Handwriting Y ou can write your message using the Handwriting mode but if at any time yo u feel you can’t reme mber ho w to input text, you can touch the Input Select field and se lec t Keypad. The available T ext Input modes are: abc , Abc , ABC , Numeric , and Symbols .

52 Outdoor Profile In this case, you a re outdoors a nd might not be able to hear the phone, or need an increa sed volume in orde r to hear the phone. Fo r example, you migh t be jogging and need the phone to vibrate and ring loudly . Editing the Outdoo r - Call Profile 1.

92 Section 10: Camera This section explains how to use the camera on your phone. Y ou can take photographs and shoo t v ideo by using the built-in camera function ality . Y our 2.0 megapixel camera produces photos in JPEG format. Important!: Do not take photos of people without their permission.

This is an a pproximate number of total pictures which can be taken at the current ima ge size. 4.
