Getting star ted 9 The microphone a t the top of the device is active only when y ou use the speakerphone or take videos. • Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the battery .

Getting star ted 11 Installing the SIM or USIM card and batt er y Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider , and the included battery . • Only microSIM car ds work with the device . • Some L TE ser vices may not be available depending on the service provider .
Getting star ted 12 3 Push the SIM or USIM car d into the slot until it locks in place . • Do not inser t a memor y card into the SIM car d slot. I f a memor y card happens t o be lodged in the SIM card slot, take the devic e to a Samsung Ser vice Centr e to remov e the memor y card.
Getting star ted 13 Removing the SIM or USIM car d and battery 1 Remove the back c over . 2 Pull out the ba tter y . 3 Pr ess the SIM or USIM card gently with your finger , and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 14 Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time. A computer can be also used to charge the devic e by connecting them via the USB cable. Use only Samsung-appro ved chargers , batteries, and cables.
Getting star ted 15 When using a USB 2.0 cable, plug the USB cable in to the right side of the multipurpose jack as shown in the image below . Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty .
Getting star ted 16 Checking the batter y charge status When you char ge the batter y while the device is off , the following ic ons will show the current battery charge status: Charging F ully charged Reducing the batter y c onsumption Y our device provides options that help y ou save ba tter y pow er .
Getting star ted 17 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 18 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → General → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Remove the back c over and ba tter y . 2 Pull out the memory card.
Getting star ted 19 Replacing the S P en nib While using the S P en, the S Pen nib ma y get dull. If the nib is dull, replace it with a new one . 1 Hold the nib with the tweezers firmly , and then pull it out. 2 Inser t a new nib into the S P en until you hear a click.
Getting star ted 20 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 21 Holding the devic e Do not cov er the antenna ar ea with your hands or other objects. This may cause connectivity problems or drain the ba tter y . A djusting the volume Pr ess the Volume butt on up or down to adjust the ringtone volume , or to adjust the sound volume when pla ying music or video .
22 Basics Indicator ic ons The icons displa yed at the t op of the screen pr ovide inf ormation about the status of the device . The icons list ed in the table below are most c ommon.

Basics 24 F inger gestures T apping T o open an application, t o select a menu item, to press an on-scr een button, or to ent er a character using the on-screen keyboar d, tap it with a finger . T apping and holding T ap and hold an item f or more than 2 seconds to access a vailable options.
Basics 25 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 26 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 27 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Con trols → Motions , and then drag the Motions switch to the right.
Basics 28 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. Holding to ear While viewing call, message , or contact details, pick up and hold the device to y our ear to make a call.
Basics 29 P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 30 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 31 C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback . Air Gesture Use this f eature t o control functions without touching the scr een.
Basics 32 Air jump While viewing emails or webpages , move your hand up or do wn across the sensor to scr oll the page up or down. Air br ow se Move y our hand to the left or right across the sensor to br owse images , webpages, songs, or memos.
Basics 33 Air call-ac cept When a call comes in, mo ve your hand t o the lef t, and then to the right across the sensor t o answer the call ..
Basics 34 U sing the S P en The included S P en can be used to easily select items or per form func tions. A c tions using the S P en with the button pressed pro vide additional conv eniences, such as screen captur e. Pull out the S P en from the slot to use it .
Basics 35 Air c ommand Pr ess the S Pen butt on while hovering the S P en over the scr een to display air command. With this f eature, y ou can directly use the following actions: • Action Memo : T ur n your handwriting int o an ac tionable link to one of a range of useful featur es.
Basics 36 Capturing scr eenshots T ap Screen W rite on the air command. A lternatively , with the S Pen butt on pressed, touch the screen until y ou hear a click . I t is possible to dra w , wr ite on, or cr op a screenshot. The screenshot is sa ved in the Galler y → Screenshots folder .
Basics 37 Selec ting and capturing an image With the S P en button pr essed, dra w a line around an ar ea to select it. If necessar y , use one of the following options: • : Restore the original selection. • : Con ver t the selec tion to a cir cular shape.
Basics 38 Air view Use this f eature t o per form various functions while the S Pen or y our finger is hovering over the screen. On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Con trols → Air view , and then drag the Air view switch to the right.
Basics 39 Samsung Smar t P ause Use this f eature t o pause videos when you look aw ay from the scr een. On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Con trols → Smar t screen , and then tick Smar t pause . During video playback, look away from the scr een to pause the video .
Basics 40 Samsung Smar t S cr oll Use this f eature t o scroll the screen up or do wn by tilting your head or the device . On the Home screen, tap Apps → Settings → Con trols → Smar t screen → Smar t scroll , and then drag the Smar t scroll switch to the right.
Basics 41 A c tiva ting Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run two applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w panel can run. • When launching applications that c ontain multimedia files, such as music or videos, sound fr om both files will be play ed.
Basics 42 Using Multi W indow applications While using Multi Windo w applications, select an application window , tap the circle between the application windows , and then use one of the following: • : Open a list of recen tly-used applications in the selected window .
Basics 43 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.
Basics 44 • Air view : Activate or deactivate the air view f eature. • Air gesture : Activate or deactivate the air gestur e feature . • Hands-free mode : Activate or deactivate hands-fr ee mode. • Smar t stay : Activate or deactivate the smart stay featur e.
Basics 45 Rearranging it ems Adding an applica tion icon On the Home screen, tap Apps , tap and hold an application icon, and then drag it in to a panel preview .
Basics 46 Rearranging panels Adding a ne w panel T ap → Edit page → . Moving a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to a new location. Removing a panel T ap → Edit page , tap and hold a panel preview , and then drag it to the rubbish bin at the top of the screen.
Basics 47 Using widgets Widgets ar e small applications that provide c onv enient functions and information on your Home screen. T o use them, add widgets from the widgets panel to the Home scr een. • Some widgets connect to web ser vices . Using a web-based widget may result in additional charges .
Basics 48 A dding widgets T o use widgets when the scr een is locked, on the Home scr een, tap Apps → Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Multiple widgets . Y ou cannot use widgets on the locked screen in easy mode. Drag the widgets panel down t o expand it.
Basics 49 Applica tions screen The Applications scr een displays icons f or all applications, including an y new applications installed. On the Home screen, tap Apps to open the Applications scr een.
Basics 50 U sing applications This device can run man y different types of applications , ranging fr om media to Internet applications. Opening an application On the Home screen or the Applications scr een, selec t an application icon to open it . Some applications are gr ouped into folders .
Basics 51 One -handed operation Y ou can ac tivate one -handed operation mode f or your conv enience. In this mode, application inter faces ar e modified for easy use with one hand . On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Con trols → One -handed operation .
Basics 52 Entering upper case T ap before ent ering a character . For all caps , tap it t wice . Changing the ke yboard type T ap and hold , and then tap to change the keyboard type. Changing language ke yboards Add languages t o the keyboard, and then slide the spac e key lef t or right to change language keyboards .
Basics 53 Direct pen input On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Con trols → S P en → Direct pen input , and then drag the Direct pen input switch to the right. When hov er ing the S P en over a text field, icon appears at the upper left corner of the text field.
Basics 54 C opying and pasting T ap and hold ov er text, drag or to select more or less text, and then tap Cop y to cop y or Cut to cut. The selected text is copied to the clipboard. T o paste it in to a text entr y field, tap and hold a t the point where it should be inserted, and then tap P aste .
Basics 55 A dding Wi - Fi networks If the desired network does not appear in the networks list, tap Add W i-F i net work at the bottom of the networks list. Enter the network name in Network SSID , select the securit y type and enter the passwor d if it is not an open network, and then tap Connect .
Basics 56 T ransf erring files Move audio , video , image, or other types of files from the devic e to the computer , or vice versa. • The f ollowing file f ormats are supported by some applications. Some file f ormats are not supported depending on the version of the device ’ s software or the computer opera ting system.
Basics 57 C onnec ting with W indow s Media Play er Ensure that Window s Media Player is installed on the c omputer . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable. 2 Open Windo ws Media Play er and sync music files. C onnec ting as a media device 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 58 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a signatur e On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → Signatur e .
Basics 59 Setting a PIN On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → PIN . Enter at least f our numbers, and then enter the passw ord again to v er ify it. Setting a passwor d On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → P asswor d .
Basics 60 Upgr ading the device The device can be upg raded to the lat est soft ware . This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider . Upgr ading with Samsung K ies Launch Samsung Kies and connec t the device to the c omputer .
61 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Keypad : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Logs : Make a call from the history of incoming and outgoing calls and messages.
Communication 62 F inding contacts Enter a name , phone number , or email address to find a c ontact in the contacts list. As characters are ent ered, pr edic ted contacts appear . Selec t one to place a call to it . Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sign appears.
Communication 63 • → Con tacts : Open the contacts list. • → Action Memo : Launch Action Memo. • → Message : Send a message. • → T ransfer : Connect the first par ty to the second par ty . This disconnects you from the con versation.
Communication 64 Receiving calls Answ ering a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large circle . If the call waiting ser vice is active, another call can be made . When the second call is answer ed, the first call is put on hold . Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large circle .
Communication 65 Call f or warding The device can be set t o send incoming calls to a specified number . T ap → Call settings → Additional settings → Call f or warding , and then select a call type and condition.
Communication 66 T ap and hold the other par ty ’ s image to access the f ollowing options: • Captur e image : Capture the other party ’ s image . • Record video : T ake a video of the other par ty ’ s images. It is illegal in many countries to r ecord a call without the other part y ’ s prior permission.
Communication 67 C ontac ts Use this application to manage c ontac ts, including phone numbers , email addresses , and others. T ap Con tacts on the Applications screen. Managing con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Crea ting a contac t T ap and enter contact information.
Communication 68 Searching f or con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Use one of the f ollowing search methods: • Scroll up or down the con tacts list. • Use the index at the right side of the c ontacts list for quick scrolling , by dragging a finger along it.
Communication 69 Impor ting and expor ting contacts T ap Con tacts . Impor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an impor t option. Expor ting contacts T ap → Impor t/Expor t , and then select an expor t option. Sharing con tac ts T ap → Share namecar d via , select contacts, tap Done , and then select a sharing method.
Communication 70 C ontac t groups T ap Groups . Adding c ontac ts to a gr oup Selec t a gr oup , and then tap . Selec t contacts to add, and then tap Done . Managing groups T ap , and then take one of the follo wing actions: • Create : Make a new group .
Communication 71 Messages Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messages on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 72 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Scheduling . Set a time and date, and then tap Done . The device will send the message at the specified time and da te . • If the device is turned off at the scheduled time, is not connected to the network, or the network is unstable, the message will not be sent.
Communication 73 Email Use this application to send or view email messages . T ap Email on the Applications screen. Setting up email accoun ts Set up an email account when opening Email for the first time .
Communication 74 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Reply to the message. Add this email addr ess to the contacts list.
Communication 75 Google M ail Use this application to quickly and directly access the Google Mail ser vice. T ap Google Mail on the Applications screen. • This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . • This application ma y be labelled differ ently depending on the reg ion or ser vice provider .
Communication 76 Reading messages Pr eview attachment. Keep the message for long-term storage . Mark the message as a reminder . Delete themessage. Reply to the message. Mark the message as unread. Reply to all recipients or f or ward the message to others.
Communication 77 Hangouts Use this application to cha t with others. T ap Hangouts on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider . Selec t a friend from the friends list or enter da ta to search and select a friend from the r esults to star t chatting .
Communication 78 Google+ Use this application to sta y connec ted with people via Google ’ s social network ser vice. T ap Google+ on the Applications screen. W eb & network 80 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap → Clear history . Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy .
W eb & network 81 Searching the w eb by voic e T ap the address field , tap , speak a keyword , and then select one of the suggested key wor ds that appear . Syncing with other de vices Sync open tabs and bookmarks to use with Chrome on another device , when you ar e logged in with the same Google account.
W eb & network 82 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the auto- generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.
W eb & network 83 Samsung Link Use this application to pla y content sav ed on remotely-located devic es or web stor age ser vices ov er the I nternet. Y ou can play and send multimedia files on y our device to another device or web st orage ser vice.
W eb & network 84 Managing con tents on a w eb storage service Selec t a web st orage ser vice , and then view and manage your files. T o transf er files bet ween y our device and a web storage service, tap , select files, and then tap .
W eb & network 85 Crea ting a group f or Group Pla y When you cr eate a Group Pla y session, other devices can join the session and share the content . When you use a passw ord for a Gr oup Play session, other devices must en ter the passwor d to join the session.
W eb & network 86 Using additional f eatures in a Gr oup Pla y session While sharing conten t with other devices, use the f ollowing featur es: • : Change the speaker settings for each c onnected device. • → : Adjust the v olume. • → : Set the device to use all connected devices as ster eo speakers.

90 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 91 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Smar t volume . When Smar t volume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
Media 92 Camer a Use this application to take phot os or videos. Use Galler y to view photos and videos taken with the devic e ’ s camera. (p . 100 ) T ap Camer a on the Applications screen. • The camera aut omatically shuts off when unused. • Make sure that the lens is clean.
Media 93 Shooting mode Several photo eff ec ts are a vailable. T ap MODE , and then scroll up or down the scr een at the right side of the screen. • Aut o : Use this to allo w the camera to evaluat e the sur roundings and det ermine the ideal mode for the phot o .
Media 94 • Animated phot o : Use this to cr eate animated photos fr om a video . • Golf : Use this setting to take a radial image of a c omplete golf swing, combining sev eral images together to make one c omposite view . • Rich tone (HDR) : Use this to take phot os without losing details in bright and dark areas.
Media 95 P anoramic photos A panoramic photo is a wide landscape image consisting of multiple shots . T ap MODE → P anorama . T ap and mo ve the camera in one direction. When the blue frame aligns with the viewfinder , the camera automatically takes another shot in a panoramic sequenc e.
Media 96 Recor ding mode T ap → to change the rec ording mode. • Normal : Use this mode f or normal quality . • Limit for MMS : Use this mode to lo wer the r ecording quality for sending via messages . • Slow motion : Use this mode to take a video of a mo ving subject.
Media 97 Dual Camer a mode When you take a landscape phot o with the rear camera, the phot o or video captured by the front camer a appears in an inset window , or vice versa. Use this f eature to take a beautiful landscape photo and a self-por trait simultaneously .
Media 98 C ontrolling the camera r emotely Set a device as a viewfinder to contr ol the camera remotely . T ap → → Remote viewfinder , and then connect the device and the camera using Wi-F i Direct or NFC. T ap to take a photo r emotely using the device as a viewfinder .
Media 99 • Audio z oom : Make the sound from the zoomed subject louder while recor ding. • Location tag : Attach a GPS location tag t o the photo .

Media 101 T rimming segmen ts of a video Selec t a video , and then tap . Move the start bracket to the desired starting point, move the end bracket to the desir ed ending point, and then sav e the video. Editing images When viewing an image, tap and use the follo wing func tions: • F av ourite : Add t o the favourites list .
Media 102 Modifying images When viewing an image, tap and use the follo wing functions: • Rot ate : Rotate the image . • Crop : Crop the image . • Colour : Adjust the satur ation or brightness of the image. • Effect : Apply effects to the image .
Media 103 Mak ing image collages In a folder , tap → Crea te collage , select t wo t o four images , and then tap Done . Selec t a style at the bottom of the screen, and then tap . T o add images , tap → . T o delete images , tap . T o change the split type, tap .
Media 104 Using T ag buddy T ap → Settings → T ag buddy , and then drag the T ag buddy switch to the right t o display a con textual tag (weather , location, date , and person ’ s name) when opening an image . Organising with f olders Creat e a folder to organise images or videos stor ed in the device.
Media 105 Crea ting stor y albums Creat e stor y albums by selecting images from Galler y or images sor ted by tag inf ormation. T ap , and then select an option. Select images from Galler y . Select images by tag information. Crea ting albums from Galler y T ap F rom Galler y , select a folder , selec t images, and then tap .
Media 106 V iewing stor y albums Selec t a story album. The cov er image appears on the first page. Scroll left or right to view images in the stor y album. On a page of the album, tap and use the following functions. The available options vary depending on the page.
Media 107 Editing images T ap the image of the page in an album. Add a caption. Select among various effects that are a vailable. Send the image to others. Delete the image. T ap , and then use the follo wing functions: • Slideshow : Star t a slideshow or change the slideshow settings .
Media 108 Crea ting albums with recommended phot os When you take multiple phot os in a location, the device suggests cr eating a new album based on the location. This featur e helps you crea te photo albums c onv eniently when you hav e daily events or tra vel.
Media 109 Pla ying videos Selec t a video to pla y . Change screen ratio . Move f or wards or backwards by dragging the bar . Play music on DLNA-enabled devices. Restar t the current video or skip to the previous video . T ap and hold to mov e backwards quickly .
Media 110 Using P opup V ideo play er Use this f eature t o use other applications without closing the video play er . While watching videos, tap to use the pop-up player . Spread two fingers apart on the screen to enlarge the pla yer or pinch to r educe it.
