Getting to Know the 4000i 1 Getting to Know the 4000i The Rear Projectio n SMART Board 400 0i interactive whiteboard is a slim cabinet with an integrated LCD projector and a 66" (167.6 c m) inte ractive whiteboard (measured on the diagonal), which is sp ecially designed for enhanced rear pr ojection clarity .

Getting to Know the 4000i 5 The Connection Panel The connection panel is a conv enient location for connecting the laptop umbilical and other peripheral device and data source cab les.
6 Getting to Know the 4000i The Power and Laptop Um bilical Connections The power connections are at the back of the 40 00i, beside the co nnection panel.
Getting to Know the 4000i 7 The Ep son 9300i Projector The 4000i comes with an Ep son 9300i multimedia projector for you to inst all in the cabinet. This projector has be en selected for it s high resolution and it s uniform brightness and clarity . Also, its lamp has a life expect ancy of 7,000 hours.
8 Setting Up the 4000i Setting Up the 4000i T o set up the Rear Projectio n SMART Bo ard 4000i interactive whiteboard, you m ust install th e projector and an in ternal computer , and power up the 4000i. If you have other devices in your setup, read the applicable p ages of this section to learn how to inst all these peripherals.
Setting Up the 4000i 9 Inst alling the Laptop Shelf Y ou can install the lapto p shelf on either side of the cabinet. Y ou should install the shelf before you install th e computer , because it’ s easier to remove the plastic hole covers when the computer is not inside the cabinet.
10 Setting Up the 4000i 1. Insert th e J-hook into the ha ndle recess that’s on the sa me side o f the cabi net as the guest laptop shelf, and flip it into place.
Setting Up the 4000i 11 1. Choose the side on which you want to mount the shelf. Also select which of th e three height options you want to use. 2. Using the hex-head screwdriver that come s with your videoconferencing shelf kit, remove the thr ee 1/4-20 x 1/2" fa steners as sh own.
12 Setting Up the 4000i 4. If you’re installing the mounting arm on the same side as the IR receiver , detach the receiver and leave it tem porarily dangling. 5. Carefully slide the mounting arm onto the si de of the cabinet, ensur ing that the cables remain in the channel and are not pinche d.
Setting Up the 4000i 13 7. Hook the shelf to t he keyholes in the mountin g arm, ti ghtening the thumbscrew to secure the shelf. 8. Y ou can use the J-hook to manage th e cables along the side of the cabinet. If you haven’t already installed th e J-hook, clip it to the handle on the side of the 400 0i.
14 Setting Up the 4000i Removing the Rear Access Panel Y ou must remove the rear access panel before you can install devi ces inside the cabinet, su ch as the inter nal comput er and the projector . After you install these devic es, replac e the rear access panel to keep yo ur equipment secure.
Setting Up the 4000i 15 Inst alling the Projector T o in stall the projector , attach the mount ing br acket to the cabinet, atta ch the projector to the mounting bracket, conn ect the cable extensions, and finally an gle the pr ojector towards the large mirror inside the cabinet.
16 Setting Up the 4000i 4. From the back of the 4000i (with the rear access panel re moved), put the mounting bracket on the bottom of the cabinet. When you do this, rest the arms of the mount on the floor behind the 4000i.
Setting Up the 4000i 17 6. Slightly loosen the four protruding screw s that are on the bottom of the projector . 7. Set the projector on the flat plate of t he mountin g bracket with the four protruding screws on the bottom of the projector slippi ng through the large part of the keyhole slots in the plate.
18 Setting Up the 4000i When you complete this step, your unit will look like this: 9. Locate the projector ca ble bundle that’ s on the left side of the cabinet (when yo u’re facing the front of .
Setting Up the 4000i 19 10. Connect the power cable labeled Projector AC to the projector ’s Power port. The other end shou ld be connected to the power bar inside the 4000i.
20 Setting Up the 4000i 12. Insert the two 1/4-20 hex socket screws from the accessory kit through th ese holes and into the threaded insert s in the arms, and tighten them using the 3/16 " hex key . 13. T ighten the screws that hold the mounti ng bracket to the cabinet using the 3/16" hex key .
Setting Up the 4000i 21 15. T urn the projector adjustment knob on th e mounting bracket until the projector has moved about 3/8" (1 cm ). (Y ou’ll fine-tune this s etting on page 32.) 16. T ighten the four mounting sc rews that hold the p rojector to the mou nting bracket using the M4 hex key .
22 Setting Up the 4000i Inst alling the Internal Computer When you install the internal computer , use the cable extensions that are bundled in the cabinet along with the co mputer ’s AC powe r cable. Set your computer on the right side of th e projecto r (when you’re facing th e front of the un it).
Setting Up the 4000i 23 9. Insert the two AA batteries from the keyboard accessory kit into the wireless keyboard and set the keyboard in the keyboard ho lder . 10. T ighten the straps around the computer to hold it in place. Connecting a Guest Laptop T o hook up the guest laptop, connect it to the cables in the laptop umbilical bundle.
24 Setting Up the 4000i Figure 1 1: Connecting the SMART USB Adapt er to a Guest Laptop The 4000i comes with th e umbilical cables already conne cted to the connection panel. However , if your cables become det ached from the p anel, see page 5 3 for instructions on reconnecting them.
Setting Up the 4000i 25 Connecting a VCR or DVD Player (Optio nal) Y ou can connect other video devices to the 4000i for display on the interactive screen . These devices could be a VCR, DVD pla yer or docume nt camera. The method of con nection and the type of connector d epend on the type of video signal that the device sends out.
26 Setting Up the 4000i NOTE: Y ou can only connect an audio c able from either a VCR or a DVD player , but not both. The connection p anel only accommodates the RCA ja cks from one external audio input sour ce. 3. Connect the VCR/DVD player po wer cable to the power bar (if there’ s a free outlet) or to a room outlet.
Setting Up the 4000i 27 Connecting a Printer to the I nternal Computer (Optional) Y ou can connect a standard DB25 printer cable (not provided) from the printer’s parallel port to the Printer port on the connection panel. T his makes th e pr inter available for the inte rnal computer only .
28 Setting Up the 4000i Connecting the Internal Computer to a Network Y ou can connect a st andard male -to-male RJ45 network cable (n ot provided) from the room’ s network outlet to the Network jac k on the connection panel. When you do this, the internal computer can access the network.
Setting Up the 4000i 29 Connecting an External Sound System (Optional) The sound from your selected input source goes into the 4000i’ s audio board where the sig nal is amplified sufficiently for th e levels needed b y the internal speakers.
30 Setting Up the 4000i Connecting an External Monitor or Projector (Optional) Y ou can send the video signal to anoth er RGB vi deo source , such as an external projecto r or a monitor .
Setting Up the 4000i 31 Powering up the 4000i When you’ve connecte d all your devices to the 40 00i, you’re ready to conne ct the main po wer cable and power up the inte rnal computer and the projector . After you do this, you must finalize your inst allation, as described in the next section ( page 32).
32 Finalizing the Installation Finalizing the Inst allation With your computer and projector on, you mu st finish setting up your Rear Projection SMAR T Board 4000i intera ctive whiteb oard.
Finalizing the Installation 33 1. Loosen the lockdown bolt on the und erside of the projector mou nting bracket using a 7/16" wrench (in the accessory kit) . 2. With these fasteners loosened, shif t the entire projector mo unting bracket to the right or to the lef t.
34 Finalizing the Installation 5. T ighten the lockdown bolt to prevent the projector plate from shif ting. 1. Adjust the appropriate sp ring-loaded screws that hold the moun ting bracket using the 7/16" nut driver from the access ory kit (see the illustration).
Finalizing the Installation 35 Customizing the A/V Mute Screen Y ou can customize the A/V mute image that’ s di splayed when the projector is n’t receiving a video signal or when it’ s powering down.
36 Finalizing the Installation Configuring the Computer and Projector Settings For optimal configura tion of the 4000i, this section includes a number of recommen ded settings for both your computer and the pr ojecto r inside the 4000i.
Finalizing the Installation 37 When you receive the 4000i, th e projector settin gs are optimized for you. However , if these settings are altered, you may need to reset them (see p age 55). The Network ON setting allows the projector to go into standby mode instead of completely powering down.
38 Finalizing the Installation 1. If you haven’t already done so, power on the computer and the pr ojector . T o power on the projector , press the Projector St andby button on the control panel. NOTE: If the projector is of f, you must press the projector ’ s Power button.
Finalizing the Installation 39 Orienting the Interactive Whiteboard T o acc urately re spond to a fing er or pen tr ay to ol touch, the computer needs to kn ow the exact location of the projected image on the screen . Y ou give the computer this informa tion when you orient the interactive whiteboard.
40 Finalizing the Installation Matching the Computer ’ s Resoluti on to the Projector ’ s Resolution T o make the most of the 4000i’s high resolution display , set the resolution setting of any computer used with the 4000i to the op timal resolu tion of the projec tor , which is 1400 x 1050 pixels.
Using the 4000i 41 Using the 4000i After you conne ct your peripheral devices to your Rear Projection SMART Board 4000i interactive whitebo ard and set up your proje ctor and computer , you’re ready to use the powerful tools that make up the 4000i and SMAR T Board software.

Using the 4000i 43 Underst anding the Control Panel LEDs The control panel cont ains four LEDs: • one set of three LEDs that indicate th e active disp lay source fo r the 400 0i • the Lamp S tatus.
44 Using the 4000i Adjusting the Projector Settings Y ou can adjust the brightness and contrast leve ls for each source independently of all other sources. The 4000i then saves yo ur settings. Fo r exampl e, if you incr ease the b rightness of the display from the VCR, the brightness for the comp uter ’s display is unaf fected.
Using the 4000i 45 Changing the Display Source The Display Source bu tton lets you switch between three input devices for video an d audio input, and control over the intera ctive whiteboard. Y ou’ll know whic h is the current source from the Active Display Source LED.
46 Using the 4000i Changing V ideo Display Sources T o see the video output from the DVD player (o r the device connected using the S-video port on the conn ection panel), pres s the Display Source button until the V ideo IN LED illuminates.
Using the 4000i 47 If the image on the screen is too large or too small, check that the re solution setting for your laptop. The projector in the 4000i scales all resolutio ns from 640 x 480 pixels and up .
48 Using the 4000i • Keyboard, a virtual keyboar d for entering text in an applica tion • the Floating T ools, a virtua l palette o f annot ation tools • the SMART Board Control Pa nel, a utility that lets yo u configure the interactive whiteboard, including the pen tray tools Y ou can use Notebook soft ware to create and save annot ations.

However , you should periodically clea n its component s so it can display the best possible image.
50 Maintaining and Troublesho oting the 4000i The back of the interactive screen is well prot ected by the cabin et. However , if it must be dusted, or if a mark has been m ade on its surfa c e, dab it gently with a sof t cloth that’ s spraye d with standard , alcohol-free glass cleane r .
Maintaining and Troublesho oting the 4000i 51 1. Shut down the projector (s ee page 48) a nd unplug it when the lamp has coo led down. 2. Open the front doors of the 40 00i and disc onnect all cables that are conne cted to the projector , including the power cable.
52 Maintaining and Troublesho oting the 4000i 6. As you hold the mounting bracket, remove the screws that hold the arms of the mounting bracket to the con nection panel br acke t. T o do this, use the 3/16" hex key . 7. Gently tilt the mounting bracket until t he arms are resting on the floor behind the cabinet.
Maintaining and Troublesho oting the 4000i 53 Replacing the Projector Lamp and Air Filter In general, you should replace your projector la mp after 7 ,000 hours of use. At the same time, you should replace the air filter with the one th at you’ll receive with the replacem ent lamp.

Maintaining and Troublesho oting the 4000i 55 Adjusting the Projector Settings The projector is configured for optimal pe rf ormance within the 400 0i. However , if these settings are altered, you can easily restore them. By setting the standby mode to Network On , you allow the projector to go into st andby mode instead of full sleep mode.
56 Maintaining and Troublesho oting the 4000i Adjusting the Front Doors If the bottom of a door scrapes the base of the cabinet or if the ga p between the doors is slightly wider toward the base of the cabinet, yo u can adjust the doors by adjusting the hin ges.
Maintaining and Troublesho oting the 4000i 57 Troubleshooting If you discover a problem with your 4000i, r ead th e hints and tip s in this section to isolate and resolve the problem. Most problems result from in correct cabling, an incorrect compu ter setting or improperly installed or configured software , including the video card settings.

With the screen removed, you’ll find it easiest to reach inside the cabinet and remove the screw through the hole above the ha ndhold.
