F EATURES AND B ENEFITS 1-2 Features and Benefits • Internet connection to xDSL or Cable modem via a 10/100 Mbps WAN p ort • Internet connection to ISDN TA or PSTN modem via an RS-232 console port.
I NTRODUCTION 1-3 Applications Many adva nced application s are provid ed by the Barricade , such as : • LAN Access The Barricade provides connectivity to 10/100 Mbps devices, making it easy to create a network in small offices or homes. • Internet Access This device supports Internet access through an xDSL, Cable, ISDN or PSTN connection.
A PPLICATIONS 1-4 • User-Definable Application Sensing Tunnel You can define special applications that require multiple connections such as Internet gaming, videoconferencing, and Internet telephony. The Barricade can then sense the application type and open a multi-port tunnel for it.
I NTRODUCTION 1-5 • Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol – Provides a secure tunnel for remote client access to a PPTP security gateway. PPTP includes provisions fo r call origination and flow control required by ISPs.
A PPLICATIONS 1-6.
2-1 C HAPTER 2 I NSTALLATION Before installing the Barricade ™ Broadband Router, verify that you have all the items listed under “Package Contents.” If any of the items are missing or damaged, contact your local SMC distributor. Also be sure that you have all the necessary cabling before installing the Barricade.
I NSTALL ATION 2-2 Please fill out and return the Warranty Registration Card to SMC or register on SMC’s Web site at www.smc.com. The Barricade Broadband Router is covered by a limited lifetime warranty.
I NSTALL ATION 2-3 • 4 RJ-45 ports for connection to a 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Ethernet Local Area Network (LAN). These ports can auto- negotiate the operating speed to 10/100 Mbps, the mode to half/ full duplex, and the pin si gnals to MDI/MDI-X (i.e., allowing these ports to be connected to any network device with straight-through cable).
I NSTALL ATION 2-4 The following figure shows the components of the Barricade: SMC7004A BR Figure 2-1. Front and Rear Panels Item Description Reset Button Use this button to reset the power and restore the default factory settings. LEDs Power, WAN and LAN port status indicators.
I NSTALL ATION 2-5 System Requirements You must have an ISP that meets the following minimum requirements: • Internet access from your local telephone company or Internet Service Provider (ISP) using an xDSL modem, Cable modem, ISDN TA, or PSTN analog modem.
I NSTALL ATION 2-6 You should also remember to turn off the power, remove the power cord from the outlet, and keep your hands dry when you install the Barricade. Basic Installation Procedure 1. Connect the LAN : You can connect the Barricade to your PC, or to a hub or switch.
