1. Introduction 1. 1 Overview T he SMC2 586W -G is a vers atile devic e that can be c onfigur ed to be in one o f the 3 oper ational modes — Ac ces s Point, Bridge Mas ter , and Bridge Slav e—for v arious wirele ss bridging applications .
• 64-bit and 12 8-bit WEP (Wired E quivalent Priv acy ). F or wirele ss data encryption. • IEEE 802. 1x/RADIUS . When the SMC2 586W -G is in Ac ce ss Point mode, it c an be con figur ed to authentic ate wir eless us ers and distribut e encryption ke ys dynamic ally by IEEE 80 2.

Fir st - Time Ins tallation and C onfigur ation 2. 1 Selecting a Po wer Supply Method T he SMC2 586W -G can be pow ered b y either the supplied pow er adapt er or the optional SMCPWR-INJ3 Elit eConnect™ P ow er Injector . The SMC2 586W -G automatic ally selects the suit able pow er depending on your decision.

2.3 Preparing f or C onfigur ation To co nf igure an SMC2 586W -G, a managing comput er with a W eb br ow ser is needed. F or first -time conf igur ation of an SMC2 586W -G, an E thernet net- w ork int erf ace c ard (NIC) should ha ve been ins talled in the managing co m- puter .
Changing the T CP /IP Settings o f the Managing Comput er Use the Windo ws Ne twork C ontr ol P anel Applet to change the T CP /IP set- tings of the managing c omputer , so that the IP addr ess o f the comput er and the IP addre ss of the SMC2 586W -G are in the same IP subnet .

2.5 Deploying the SMC2 586W -G Aft er the set tings hav e been con figured, deplo y the SMC2 586W -G to the field application en vir onment. Connect the SMC2 586W -G to an E thernet LAN through an E thernet swit ch/hub. If e xternal high-gain dir ectional antennas ar e needed, it may be dif ficult to align the antennas .
