15 Getti n g st a rted Charging time This r epresents the time requi red to cha rge fully depleted Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries using the supplied battery charger in an environment where the ambient temperature is 25° C (77°F). • Charging is complete i n approximately six hours.
16 Inserti ng the b atteries , Open t he battery cov er. Slide it in the directi o n of the arro w with the OPEN but ton pressed, and it ope ns out. , Insert the bat ter ies. Matc h the +/ − pole s of the batterie s to the + / − marks inside the ba tter y case.
17 Getti n g st a rted Battery remaining indicator (When using th e Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries) As the ba ttery power decrea ses with use , the battery re maining indi cator displays the amoun t of power remaini ng using the following sym bols. • If the LCD screen is off, press to turn it on.
18 Insertin g the batt eries (continu ed) When using Sony alkaline batteries 1) Shooting u nder the following conditions : – The image quality is set to [Fine]. – Shooting one image e very 30 seconds. – Alternati vely pressing the zoom W and T buttons fully for each shot (DSC-P72/P52 only).
19 Getti n g st a rted Using an ext ernal powe r source , Open the jack cov er, then connect the AC-LS5 AC Adap tor (not supplied) to the DC IN jack of the cam era. Conn ect the plug wi th the v mark fac ing toward th e LCD scre en. • Be sure to use the A C-LS5 A C Ad aptor .
20 Turn ing your cam era on/off , Press POWER to turn on the camera . The POWER la mp lights in green and the powe r is on. When you tu rn on the camera for th e firs t time, the C lock S et scre en appear s (page 21) . To turn off the po wer Press P OWER again, the POWER la mp goes out, and th e camera tu rns off.

25 Shootin g still images Image size and quali ty You ca n choose ima ge size (numbe r of pixe ls) and ima ge qua lity (com pressio n ratio) ba sed on the kind of i mages you want to shoot.
26 Basic still image shootin g – using au to mode , Set the mode se lector to , and t urn on the c amera. The recor d ing fold er name is indicate d on the LCD screen for about five sec onds.
27 Shootin g still images , Pre ss the shutte r button fully down . The shutte r clicks, the shoot ing is com ple ted, an d the still im age is save d in the “M emory S tick.” When the r ecord ing lamp (pages 9, 11, 1 3) go es out, yo u can shoot th e next image.
28 Basic still image shooting – using auto mode (continued) About Auto Focus When y ou tr y to sh oot a subj ect that is hard to focu s on, th e AE/AF lock ind icator will change to flash ing slowly. The Au to Fo cus fu nction ma y be dif ficult to use with in the fol lowing subjec ts.
29 Shootin g still images Using the zoom feature , Press t he zoom butto ns to choo se the desire d zoom position, a nd shoot y our image. The minim um distance needed to focus on a subject Appr oxima.
30 Shooting close-ups – Macro (DSC-P72 only) For close-up s of small subje cts like flowers or insects, shoot using the mac ro feature. You ca n use this feature for close-ups of subjects up to the distances specified below.
31 Shootin g still images Using the self-timer , Set the mode selector to , and pres s V ( ) on the control butt on. The (Self-ti mer) indicato r appears on the LCD screen . • If the menu is currently displayed, press MENU first to make the menu disappear .
32 Selecting a flash mode , Set the mode se lector to , and pres s v ( ) on the c ontrol button repeated ly to select a flash mode. The flas h mode has the foll owing feat ures. No i ndic ator (Auto): The camera d ecides to use the flash b ased on lighting condit ions.
33 Shootin g still images To reduce “red-eye” wh en shooting live su bjects The flash pre -strobes before shoot ing to redu ce the red- eye phen omenon. Set [Red Eye Re duction] to [On ] in the SET UP settings (pa ge 106). ap pears on the LCD screen .
34 Shooting with the finder The find er is convenie nt when you want to save battery po wer, or when i t is difficult to conf irm th e ima ge usin g the LCD sc reen.
35 Shootin g still images Inserting the date and time on a still image , Set the mode selector to SET UP. The SE T UP scr een appear s. • When images are shot with the date and time inserted, the date and time cannot be remove d later .

38 Viewin g images on a TV scre en , Connect the supplied A/V connect ing cable to the A/ V OUT (MONO) jack of the camera an d the audio /video input jacks of the TV. If your TV has stere o type input jacks, connec t the audio plug (b lack) of the A/V connec ting cable to the Lch aud io input jack.
39 Viewing st ill image s Watching images on a TV screen If you wa nt to view ima ges on a TV , you need a TV having a vi deo input ja ck and the A/V co nnecting ca ble (suppl ied). The colo r system o f the TV mu st match as that of your di gital still cam era.
40 Deleting i mages , Set the mode se lector to , and t urn on the c amera. Select the image yo u want to delete with b / B on the control but ton. , Press (Del ete). The image has not ye t been deleted at this poin t. • Y ou cannot delete prot ected images (page 67).

53 Advanced st ill image shooting • Under fluorescent lights that flicker, e ven if you choose , t he white balance may no t be properly adjusted. • When the flash is tr iggered, the manual s etting of white balance is cancelled, and the shooting of the image is done in Auto m ode.
54 Shooting multiple fram es – Clip Motion Mode se lector: You ca n shoot a number of still images consecu tively (G IF anima tion) . Beca use the file s ize is small, t hese imag es are ideal f or use on a hom e page, or fo r attach ing to an e- mail message.
55 Advanced st ill image shooting • If you do not complete Step 6 , all the images will not be saved in the “Memory St ick.” • In Clip Motion, the date and time cannot be inserted. • When you view Clip Moti on images using the Index sc reen, the images may appear different from the actual image recorded.

70 Choosing images to print – Print (DPOF) mark Mode se lector: You ca n designate c ertain image s to be prin ted. This ma rk is convenie nt when you w ant to print images at a shop tha t confor ms with the DPOF (Digit al Print Order Format ) standard.

91 Troublesh ooting Troubleshoo ting If you have trouble wi th your cam era, try the follo wing soluti ons. 1 Ch eck the item s on pages 91 to 97. If the screen shows “C: ss : ss ,” the self-di agnosis f unction is working. Please see p age 100. 2 Press the RE SET butt on located insi de the j ack cover , then turn on th e cam era again.
92 Shooting still imag es / movies The power turns off suddenly. • If you do not operate the camera for ab out 90 second s while th e power is on, the cam era turns off automa tically to preven t wearing dow n the battery (wh en [Power Sa ve] is [Off], aft er three minute s.
93 Troublesh ooting The image is too bright. • You are sh ooting a spot lighted subject i n a dark locati o n such as on a stage. • The bright ness of the LCD screen is too high. p Adj ust the exposur e (page 50). p Adj ust the brightne ss of the LCD screen (page 107).
