6 Basic techniques for better images When you press the shutter button h alfway down, the camera adjusts th e focus automatically (Auto Focus). Remember to pres s th e shutter button on ly halfway down. When focusing is difficult t [Focus] (page 39) If the image looks blurred even af ter focusing, it may be because of camera shake.
7 Basic techniques for better images Hints for preventing blur The camera moved accidentally when you took the image. This is called “Camera shake”. On the other ha nd, if the subje ct moved when you took the image, it is called “subject blur”.
8 Basic techniques for better images You can create various image s by adjusting the exposure and th e ISO sensitivity. Exposure is the amount of light that the camera w ill receive when you release the shutter.
9 Basic techniques for better images The apparent color of the subject is aff ected by the lighting conditions. Example: The color of an ima ge affected by light sources The color tones are adjust ed automatically in the auto adjustment mode. However, you can adjust color tones manu ally with [White Balance] ( page 41).
10 Basic techniques for better images A digital image is made up of a coll ection of small dots called pixels. If it contains a large number of pixels, the pi cture becomes large, it takes up more memory, and the image is displayed in fine detail. “I ma ge size” is shown by the number of pixels.
11 Basic techniques for better images The eyes of the subject may come out red, or fuzzy white circular spots may appear w hen using the flash. These phen omena can be reduced by taking the following steps. The “Red-eye phenomenon” Pupils become dilated in dark e nvironments.

13 Identifying parts I Tripod receptacle • Use a tripod with a screw less than 5.5 mm (7/32 inch) long. Otherwis e, you cannot firmly secure the camera, and d amage to the camera may occur.

18 Changing the screen display Each time you press v (DISP) on the control button, the display changes as follows: * The brightness of the L CD Backlight increases • If you view imag es in bright o utside light, adjust to increase the brightn ess of the LCD backlight.
19 Using the internal memory The camera has approximately 12 MB of internal memory. This memory is not removable. Even when there is no “Memory Stick Duo” me dia inserted in the camera, you can record images using this internal memory. We recommend that you copy (back up) data without error using one of the follo wing methods.
20 Basic Oper ations Shooting images 1 Select the desired function from the mode switch. When shooting still images: Select (Still image). When shooting movies: Select (Movie). 2 Hold the camera, with your elbows pressed against your b ody to steady it.
21 Basic Oper ations Shooting images When shooting movies: Press the shutter button fully down. To stop r ecording, press th e sh utter button fully down again.
22 Shooting images Macro (Shooting close-up) Press b ( ) on the control butto n repeatedly until the desired mode is selected. (No indicator): Auto The camera adjusts the fo cus automaticall y from distant subjects to close-up. Normally, pu t the camera in this mode.
23 Basic Oper ations Shooting images To change the still image size Press (Image Size), and then press b / B to select the size. For details on the image size, see page 10. The default setting is marked with . For still images *1) Images are recorded in 3:2 as pect ratio, same as phot ograph pr inting pap er or postcards, etc.
24 Viewing images 1 Select (Playback) with the mode switch. 2 Select an image with b / B on the cont rol button. Movie: Press z to play back a movie. (Press z again to stop playback.) Press B to fast forwa rd, b to rewind. (Pre ss z to return to normal playback.
25 Basic Oper ations Viewing images To view an index screen Press (Index) to display the index screen while a still image is displayed. Select an image with v / V / b / B . To return to the sing le image screen, press z . • Each time you press (Index), the number of images on the index screen increases.
26 Deleting images 1 Select (Playback) with the m ode switch. 2 Press the (Delete) button wh ile displaying in single-image o r index mode. 3 Select the desired deletion method with b / B from am ong [This Image], [Multiple Images] and [All In T his Folder], then press z .
27 Basic Oper ations Deleting images When you select [This Image] You can delete the selected image. Select [OK] with v , then press z . When you select [Multiple Images] You can select and delete mu ltiple images simultaneously. 1 Select the images you wan t to delete , then press z .
28 Using menu items 1 Press the MENU button to display the men u. • The menu will be displayed only during shooting and playback m ode. • Different items will b ecome visible depending on the selected mode. 2 Select a desired menu item with v / V on the con trol button.
29 Basic Oper ations Menu items The available menu items vary depending on the mode switch positio n, and the shooting mode. Only the available items a re displayed on the screen. Shooting menu (page 33) * The operation is limited according t o the selected Scene Selection mode (page 3 2).
30 Using the sho oting function s Switching the shooting mode You can switch the shooting mode. There are eight shooting modes a vailable for still image s and the de fault setting is Auto Adjustment. To switch the shooting mode to other than Au to Adjustment, follow th e procedure described below.
31 Using the sho oting func tions Shooting images according to the scene Scene Selection modes The following modes are preset to match the scene conditions. * When you shoot im ages using (Twilight Portrait) or (Twilight) mod e, the shutter speed becom es slower, and blurring occurs frequently , so use of a tripod is recommen ded.
32 Shooting images accord ing to the scene Functions you can us e in Scene Selection For shooting an image appropria tely according to the scene condition, a combination of functions is determined by th e camera . Some functions are not available, depending on the Scene Selection mode.

34 Shooting menu For details on the operation 1 page 28 Selects the anti-blur mode. • The anti-blur function may not wo rk properly in the following cases . – When camera shake is too strong . – When the shutter speed is slo w, for example, shooting night scenes.
35 Using the sho oting func tions Shooting menu For details on the operation 1 page 28 Selects whether to use the Face Detection function or not. Detects the faces of your subjects and adjusts the focus, flash, exposure, white bala nce and red-eye reduction se ttings automatically.
36 Shooting menu For details on the operation 1 page 28 Selects whether the camera performs continuous shoot ing or not when you press t he shutter button. On the Burst • When recording with the sel f timer, a series of a maxi mum of five images is recorded.

Use the menu wh en it is difficult to get the proper focus in auto focus mode. • AF sta nds for A uto Fo cus. • When you use Digital Zoom , the AF range finder frame is disabled and appears in a dotted line.
40 Shooting menu For details on the operation 1 page 28 z If the subject is out of focus When shooting with the su bject at the edge of the fra me (or the screen) or when using [Center AF], the camera may not focus on a subject at the edge of the frame.
41 Using the sho oting func tions Shooting menu For details on the operation 1 page 28 Adjusts color tones accord ing to the surrounding light cond itions. Use this f unction if image color appears unnatural. White Balance: Adjusting the color tones (Auto) Adjusts the White Ba lance automatical ly.

43 Using the sho oting func tions Shooting menu For details on the operation 1 page 28 The flash strobes two or mo re times before shooting to reduce the red-eye phenomen on when using the flash. • To avoid blurring o f images, hold the camera firmly until the shutter is releas ed.

The original image is retained. To retouch the still images 1 Select the im ages you want to retouch while displaying in si ngle-image.
48 Viewing menu For details on the operation 1 page 28 You can change the aspect ratio and size of the shooting images, then record them as new files. You can convert images to the 16:9 aspect ratio for high defi nition viewing and to the VGA size for blogs or e-mail attachments.
49 Using the vie wing functions Viewing menu For details on the operation 1 page 28 Protects images against accidental erasure. Th e (Protect) indicator appears on a protected image. To protect an image 1 Select the images you wan t to protec t while displa ying images in single-i mage mode.
50 Viewing menu For details on the operation 1 page 28 To cancel the protection Select the image for whi ch you want to cancel protection, and unlock it by taking the same steps as in “To select and protect images”. The (Protect) indicator disappears.

52 Using the Set up screen Using Setup items You can change the default se ttings using the Setup screen. 1 Press the MENU button to display the MENU screen. 2 After pressing V on the control button, go to the (Setup) setting, then press z . 3 Press v / V / B on the control button to select the item you want to set.
53 For details on the operation 1 page 52 Using the S etup screen Main Settings The default settings are marked with . Selects the sound produced when you operate the camera. When you operate the camera, the f unction guide appears. Initializes the setting to the default setting.
54 Main Settings For details on the operation 1 page 52 Selects the USB mode when connecting the camer a to a compu ter or a Pic tBridge co mpliant printer using the USB cable. USB Connect PictBridge Connects the cam era to a PictBrid ge compliant prin ter (page 77).
55 For details on the operation 1 page 52 Using the S etup screen Shooting Settings The default settings are marked with . With reference to the grid lin es, you can easily set a subject in a horizontal/vertical position. • The grid lines are not recorded.

59 For details on the operation 1 page 52 Using the S etup screen Memory Tool — Internal Memory Tool This item does not appear when “ Memory S tick Duo” media is inserted in the camera. Formats the internal memory. • Note that formatting permanently erases all data in the internal memory, including even protected im ages.

63 Using your computer Enjoying your Windows computer The following environment is recommended for a compute r connected to the camera. Recommended environment for copying images OS (pre-installe d): .
64 Installing the software (supplied) You can install the software (supplie d) using the following proce dure. • Log on as Administrator. 1 Turn on your computer, and insert the CD-ROM (supplied) into the CD-ROM drive. The installation menu screen appears.
65 Using your computer On the “PMB (Picture Motion Browser)” (supplied) You can use still images and movies from the camera more than ever by taking advantage of the software. This section summarizes the “PMB”. With the “PMB” you can: • Import images shot with the camera an d display them on the computer.
66 Copying images to your computer using the “PMB” 1 Insert “Memory Stick Duo” media with recorded images into the camera. • When co pying images in the i nternal memory, this step is unnecessary. 2 Insert the batteries with enough power remaining in the camera.
67 Using your computer Copying images to your computer using the “PMB” 1 Connects the camera to a computer as described “Connecting the came ra to your computer”. After making a U SB connection, the [Import Media Files] screen of “PMB” appears automatically.
68 Copying images to your computer using the “PMB” Perform the proced ures from step 1 to 4 below before: • Disconnecting the USB cable. • Removing “Memory Stick Duo” media. • Inserting “Memory Stick Duo” media int o the camera after copying images from th e internal memory.
69 Using your computer Copying images to your computer using the “PMB” • Image files are named as follows: – S till imag e files: DSC 0 ssss .JPG – M ovie files: MOV0 ssss .AVI – Index image files that are recorded when you record movies: MOV 0 ssss .
70 Copying images to a computer without “PMB” You can copy images to your computer without “PMB” as follows. For a computer with a “Memory Stick” media slot Remove the “Memory Stick Duo” media from the camera and insert it in the “Memory Stick Du o” media Adaptor .
71 Using your computer Copying images to a computer without “PMB” 3 Click [Open folder to view files] (For Windows XP: [O pen folder to view files] t [OK]) as the wizard screen appears automatica lly on the desktop. • When the wizard scre en does not appear automatically, foll ow the procedure in “F or Windows 2000”.
72 Viewing image file s stored on a computer with the camera copying to the “M emory Stick Duo” media This section describes the process using a Windows computer as an example.
73 Using your computer Using your Macintosh computer You can copy imag es to your Macintosh computer. • “PMB” is not compat ible with Macintosh computers. The following environment is recommended for a compute r connected to the camera. Recommended environment for copying images OS (pre-installe d): Mac OS 9.
74 Using your Macintosh computer Drag and drop the drive icon or the icon of the “Memory Stick Duo” media to the “Trash” icon befor ehand when you perform the procedures listed below, or the camera is disconne cted fr om the compute r. • Disconnecting the USB cable.
75 Using your computer Viewing “Cyber-shot Step-up Guide” When you install “Cyber-sho t Handbook”, “Cyber-shot Step-up Guide” is also installed. “Cyber-shot Step-up Guide” further i ntroduces h o w to use the camera and optional accessories.
76 Printing st ill images How to print still images When you print images shot in [16:9 ] mode, both edges may be cut off, so be sure to check before printing (page 89). You can print images by connec ting the camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer.
77 Printing still ima ges Printing images directly using a PictBridge compliant printer Even if you do not have a com puter, you can print images shot using your camera by connecting the camera dir ectly to a PictBridge compliant printer. • “PictBridge” is based on the CIPA standard.
78 Printing images directly using a PictBridge comp liant printer 1 Connect the camera to the printer. 2 Turn on the printer. Set the m ode switch to (Playback) and turn on the camera. After the co nnection is made , the indi cator appears. 3 Press the MENU button, select [Print] with v / V on the control button, then press z .
79 Printing still ima ges Printing images directly using a PictBridge compl ia nt printer 1 Select print settings with v / V / b / B . [Quantity] Selects the number of copies of the specified image to be printed. • The designated num ber of im ages may n ot all fit onto a single sheet depending on the quantity of images.
80 Printing at a shop You can take “Memory Stick Duo” media containing images shot with the camera to a photo printing service shop. As long as the shop supports photo printing services conforming to the DPOF, you c an make a (Print order) mark on images in advance so that you do not need to reselect them when you print them out at the shop.
81 Printing still ima ges Printing at a shop 1 Press the MENU button while displaying images in single- image mode or in index mo de. 2 Select [DPOF] with v / V on the control butto n, [Multiple Images ] with b / B , and then press z . 3 Select an image to mark with the control button, then press z .
82 Troubles hooting Troubleshooting If you experience trouble with your camera, try the following solutions. Be aware that by sending the camera f or repair , yo u give consent that the contents of the internal memory may be check ed. 1 Check the items on pages 83 to 91.
83 T rou bleshooti ng T roubleshooting The battery remaining indic ator is incorrect, or sufficient battery remaining indicator is displayed bu t the power runs out to o quickly. • This p henomenon occ urs when y ou use the c amera in an extremely h ot or cold l ocation.
84 T roubleshooting Cannot record images. • Check th e free capaci ty of the int ernal memory or “Memory S tick Duo” med ia. If it i s full, do one of the foll owing: – Delete unnecessary im ages (page 26 ). – Chan ge the “Me mory Stick D uo” media.
85 T rou bleshooti ng T roubleshooting Fuzzy specks appear in ima ges shot using the flash. • Particl es (dust, pol len, etc.) in the air refl ected the fl ash light an d appeared in t he image. This is not a ma lfunction (page 11). The close-up shooting function (Macro) does not work.
86 T roubleshooting Noise appears in the image when you view th e screen in a dark place. • The camer a is attem pting to incr ease the vi sibilit y of the scr een by tempo rarily br ightening the image under condi tions of l ow illuminat ion. There i s no effect on the reco rded imag e.
87 T rou bleshooti ng T roubleshooting Cannot delete an ima ge. • Cancel t he protect ion (page 49 ). The resizing function does not work. • You cannot resize movie s. Computer OS comp atibility with camera is unknown . • Check “ Recommended computer en vironment” on page 63 fo r Windows, and page 7 3 for Macintosh.
88 T roubleshooting After making a USB connection, “PMB” does not start automatically. • Make the USB connecti on after t he computer is turned o n (page 66) . Cannot play back images on your co mputer. • If you are using “ PMB”, refer to “P MB Guide” (pag e 65).
89 T rou bleshooti ng T roubleshooting Cannot play back or record images using the intern al memory. • There is “Memory St ick Duo” medi a inserte d in the came ra. Remove it. Cannot copy the data stored in the in ternal memory to “Memory Stick Duo” media.
90 T roubleshooting A connection cannot be establis hed. • The camera can not be conne cted direct ly to a printer that is not compliant with the PictBridge standard. Consult th e printer manufacture r as to whet her the p rinter is compliant with PictBrid ge or not.
91 T rou bleshooti ng T roubleshooting Cannot operate the camera after canceling printing. • Wait for a while as the pr inter is carryin g out the cancellation . It may take some time depending o n the print er. Cannot reset the file-numbe r. • If you re place a r ecording me dium, you can not initi alize file n umbers with the camera.
92 W arning messages If the following messages appear, follow the instructions. • The batter y level is low . Insert new ones or charged Nickel-Met al Hydride batteries (s old separate ly).
93 T rou bleshooti ng Warning messages Cannot create more folders • The folder with a name beginnin g with “999” exis ts on the “Me mory Stick Duo” media. Yo u cannot create any folders if thi s is the case. File error • An erro r occurred while the im age was playing ba ck.
94 Warning messa ges Operation cannot be executed in unsupported files • Processing and other editing functions of the came ra cannot be performed o n image files that have been proce ssed using a compu ter or images that were recorded w ith anothe r camera.
95 Others Others On the “Memory Stick Duo” media “Memory Stick Duo” media is a compact, portable IC recording me dium. The types of “Memory Stick Du o” media that ca n be used with the camera are listed in the table below. Howeve r, proper operation cannot be guaranteed for all “Memory Stick Duo” media functions.
96 On the “Memory Stick Duo” media Notes on using the “Memory Stick Duo” media Adaptor (sold separately) • To use “Memory St ick Duo” media with a “Memory St ick” medi a compliant device, be sure to insert the “Memory Stick Duo” media into a “Memory Stick Duo” media Adaptor.
97 Others On the batteries Batteries you can and cannot use with your camera A: supplied B: supported C: rechargeable * Before using batteries, read the following precaution for each type of battery. As for unsupported batter ies, operating performance cannot be ensured if vo ltage drops or other problem s are caused by the nature of the battery.
