6 US • The instructions in this manual describe the controls on the remote. You can also use the controls on the system if they have the same or similar names as those on the remote. • The Control Menu items may b e different depending on the area.
7 US Note about CDs/DVDs The system can play CD-ROMs/CD-Rs/CD- RWs recorded in the following formats: – audio CD format – CD Graphics (Latin American models only) – video CD format – MP3 audio.
8 US Region code Your system has a region code printed on the rear of the unit and will only play DVDs labeled with the same region code. DVD VIDEOs labeled will also play on this system . If you try to play any other DVD VIDEO, the message [Playback prohibited by area limitations.
9 US Getting Started – BASIC – See Unpacking in Specifications, page 86. Inserting batteries into the remote You can control the system using the supplied remote. Insert two R6 (size AA) batteries by matching the 3 and # ends on the batteries to the markings insi de the compartment.
10 US Getting Started – BASIC – Before connecting the speakers, attach the speaker stand to the speaker. About how to connect the speaker cords to the SPEAKER jacks, see page 14. (For the front speakers only.) Note • Spread a cloth on the floor t o avoid damag ing the floo r.
11 US Getting Started – BASIC – 4 Draw the speaker cord through the hole o n the base. Then stand the speake r up, and untwist and straighten out the speaker co rd. 5 Secure the pedestal to the post with the screws. 6 Connect the speaker cords to th e speaker, then run them through the slots ( A , B , C , and D ) all the way.
12 US Getting Started – BASIC – 7 Slide the speaker down slowly onto the pedestal. Note • Do not catch the s peaker cord between the speaker an d the pedest al. • Do not drop the spea ker when mount ing. 8 Secure the speaker with the screws in order 1 to 2 .
13 US Getting Started – BASIC – This hookup is the basic connection of the system to the speakers and TV. Fo r other TV connections, see page 22. For oth er component connection, see page 26.
14 US Getting Started – BASIC – 1 Connecting the Speakers Required cords The connector and color tube of the speaker cords ar e the same color as the label of the jacks to be connected. Note • D o not catch the spea ker cord insula tion in the SPEAKER jack .
15 US Getting Started – BASIC – Ti p • When you want to out put the TV soun d or stereo so und of a 2 channe l source from the 6 speaker s, select th e “Dolby Pro Logic, ” “Dolby Pro Log ic II MOVIE,” or “Dolby Pro L ogic II MUSIC” sound field ( page 32).
16 US Getting Started – BASIC – To connect the FM wire antenna (aerial) Connect the FM wire antenna (aerial) to the COAXIAL FM 75 Ω jack. Note • Be sure to fully extend the FM wire antenn a (aerial). • After connecting t he FM wire an tenna (aeria l), keep it as horizontal as possible.
17 US Getting Started – BASIC – Positioning the speakers For the best possible surround so und, all the speakers other than the subwoofer should be th e same distance from the listening position ( A ). The front speakers can be placed from 0.0 to 7.
18 US Getting Started – BASIC – Follow the steps b elow to make the mi nimum number of basic adjustments for using the system . 1 Turn on the TV. 2 Press [ / 1 . Note • Disconnect the head phones when y ou perform the Quick Setup. You ca nnot operate steps after 10 with the h eadphones co nnected.
19 US Getting Started – BASIC – 10 C onnect the calibration mic to th e A.CAL MIC jack on the front panel and press X / x to select [YES], then press .
20 US After connecting the AC power cord (mains lead), the demonstration appears in the front panel display. When you press " / 1 on the remote, the demonstration turns off. Note • When you press " / 1 on the syste m, the demonstr ation does not turn off.
Getting Started – ADV ANCED – 21 US 1 Prepare screws (not supplied) that are suitable for the hol e on the back of each speaker. See the illustrations below. 2 Fasten the screws to the wall. For the front spea kers For the surround spe akers 3 Hang the speakers on the screws.
22 US Select a hookup suitable for the jacks on your TV. Connecting the video/HDMI * cords Sends a played back DVD image to a TV. Check the jacks of your TV, and choose connectio n method A , B , C , or D . Picture quality improves in order from A (standard) to D (HDMI).

24 US Does your TV accept progressive signals? Progressive is the method for displaying TV images which reduces flickering, and sharpens the image. To display using this method, you need to connect to a TV that accepts progressive signals. “PROGRE” lights up in the front panel displa y when the system outputs progressive signals.
Getting Started – ADV ANCED – 25 US x INTERLACE Select this setting when: – your TV does not accept progressive signals, or, – your TV is connected to jacks other than the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks (MONITOR OUT (VIDEO/S VIDEO)). You cannot select NORMAL (INTERL ACE) while “HDMI” lights up in the front panel disp lay.
26 US You can enjoy other component by connecting the VIDEO/AUDIO OUT jack s of another component. Connecting the system and the othe r component Outputs the other component throug h the speakers of this system.
Getting Started – ADV ANCED – 27 US To listen to the portable audio source sound through the system Connect the audio outpu t jacks of the p ortable audi o source to the AUDIO IN jack on the front panel of the system with the stereo mini-plug cord (not supplied).
28 US Basic Operations Depending on the DVD VIDEO or VIDEO CD, some operations may be di fferent or restricted. Refer to the operation details supplied with your disc. 1 Turn on your TV. 2 Switch the input selector on the TV to this system. 3 Press " / 1 .
29 US Basic Operations To save the power in standby mode Press " / 1 while the system turns on. To cancel standby mode, press " / 1 once. Additional operations * DVD VIDEOs/DVD-RWs/DVD-Rs only. ** DVD VIDEOs/DVD- RWs/DVD-Rs/DVD+RWs/ DVD+Rs only.
30 US Basic Operations Selecting the connected component You can use a VCR or other components connected to the TV/VCR 1 or 2 jacks on the rear panel. Refer to the operation manual supplied with the components for further information on the operation.
31 US Basic Operations You can enjoy TV or VCR sound from all the speakers in this system. For details, see “TV Hookup (Advanced)” (page 22) and “Other Component Hookup” (page 26). 1 Press FUNCTION +/– repeatedly until “TV/VCR1” or “TV/VCR2” appears in the front panel display.
32 US You can take advantage of surround sound simply by selecting one of system’s pre- programmed sound fiel ds. They bring the exciting and powerful sound of movie theaters into your home. Press SOUND FIELD. Press SOUND FIELD repeat edly until the sound field you want appears in the front panel display.
Sound Adjustments 33 US Note • When th e input signa l is multi channel so urce, Dolby Pro Logic and Dolby Pro Lo gic II MOVIE/MUS IC are cancel ed and the m ulti chann el source is output directly. • When th e bilingua l broadcast sound is in put, Dolb y Pro Logic and Dolby Pro Lo gic II MOVIE/MUS IC are not effec tive.
34 US Multi channel surround formats are down mixed to two channels. To turn the surround effect off Press SOUND FIELD repeatedly until “A.F.D. STD” or “2CH STEREO” appears in the front panel display. Ti p • The system memo rizes the last sound fiel d selected for each func tion mode.
V arious Functions fo r Play ing Discs 35 US You can quickly locate a particular point on a disc by monitoring the pi cture or playing back slowly. Note • Depending on the DVD/VID EO CD, you may not b e able to do some of the op erations descr ibed.
36 US You can search a DVD by title or chapter, and you can search a VIDEO CD/Super Audio CD/ CD/DATA CD/DATA DVD by track, index, or scene. As titles and tracks are assigned unique numbers on the disc, you can select the desired one by entering its number.
V arious Functions fo r Play ing Discs 37 US Ti p • When th e Control Me nu display is turned off , you can search for a chapter (DVD VIDEO/DVD-R/DVD- RW) or trac k (VIDEO CD/Su per Audio CD/CD) by pressing the number b uttons and . Note • You canno t search for a scene on a DVD+RW/ DVD+R usin g the time cod e.
38 US When you stop the disc, the system remembers the point where you pressed x and “Resume” appears in the front panel display. As long as you do not remove the disc, Resume P lay will work even if the system enters standby mode by pressing " / 1 .
V arious Functions fo r Play ing Discs 39 US You can play the conten ts of a disc in the orde r you want by arranging the order of the tracks on the disc to create your own program. You can program up to 99 tracks. Note • You can p rogram the tr ack on the curr ent disc onl y.
40 US To change or cancel a program 1 Follow steps 1 to 3 of “Creating Your Own Program.” 2 Select the program number of the track you want to change or cancel using X / x . If you want to delete the track from the program, press CLEAR. 3 Follow Step 5 for new programming.
V arious Functions fo r Play ing Discs 41 US To return to normal play Press CLEAR, or select [OFF] in Step 3. To turn off the Control Menu Press DISPLAY repeatedly until the Control Menu is turned off. Note • You canno t use this function w ith VIDEO CDs and Super VCDs wit h PBC playback .
42 US x When playing a DATA CD o r DATA DVD • [OFF] : does not play rep eatedly. • [ALL DISCS]: repeats all of the discs. • [ONE DISC]: repeats all of the albums on the current disc. • [ALBUM]: repeats the current album. • [TRACK] (MP3 audio tracks only ): repeats the current track.
V arious Functions fo r Play ing Discs 43 US When playing a DVD VIDEO recorded in multiple audio fo rmats (PCM, Dolby Digital, MPEG audio, or DTS), you can change the audio format. If the DVD VIDEO is recorded with multilingual tracks, you can also change the language.

46 US x When playing a VIDEO C D (without PBC functions), Super Audio CD, or CD • T **:** Playing time of the current track • T–**:** Remaining time of the current track • D **:** Playing time.
V arious Functions fo r Play ing Discs 47 US If various angles (multi-angles) for a scene are recorded on a DVD VIDEO, you can chang e the viewing angle.
48 US When the sound does not match the pictures on the screen, you can adjust the delay between the picture and sound. 1 Press DISPLAY when the system is in stop mode. The Control Menu appears. 2 Press X / x to select [A/V SYNC], then press . The options for [A/V SYNC] appear.

V arious Functions fo r Play ing Discs 51 US Selecting an MP3 audio track or album 1 Load a DATA CD or DATA DVD. The system starts playing from the first album. 2 Press MENU. The albums recorded on the DATA CD or DATA DVD appear. When an album is being played, its title is shaded.
52 US x When selecting an image Press PICTURE NAVI. Images of files in the album appear in 16 subscreens. Press C / X / x / c to select th e image you want to view and press . To play the next or previous JPEG image file Press C / c when the Control Menu is no t displayed.
V arious Functions fo r Play ing Discs 53 US You can play a slide show with sound by first placing both MP3 and JPEG files in the same album on a DATA CD or DATA DVD. When you play back the DATA CD or DATA DVD, select [AUTO] mode as explained below. 1 Load a DATA CD or DATA DVD.
54 US 3 Press X / x to select the setting you want. The default setting is underlined. • [NORMAL] : sets the duration to about 6 to 9 seconds. (Images that are four million pixels or more will lengthen the duration.) • [FAST]: sets the du ration shorte r than [NORMAL].
V arious Functions fo r Play ing Discs 55 US With PBC (Playback Control) functions, you can enjoy simple interactive operations, search functions, and othe r such operations. PBC playback allows you to play VIDEO CDs interactively by following the menu on the TV screen .
56 US You can preset 20 FM stations, and 10 AM stations. Before tuning, make sure to turn d own the volume to minimum. 1 Press FUNCTION +/– repeatedly until “TUNER FM” or “TUNER AM” appears in the front panel d isplay. 2 Press and hold TUNING + or – until the auto scanning starts.
T uner Functions 57 US Preset radio stations in the system’s mem ory first (see “Presetting Radio Stations” (page 56)). 1 Press FUNCTION +/– repeatedly until “TUNER FM” or “TUNER AM” appears in the front panel d isplay. The last received station is tuned in.
58 US Viewing the station name or frequency in the front panel display When the system is set to “TUNER AM” or “TUNER FM,” you can check the frequency using the front panel display. Press DISPLAY. Each time you press DISPLAY, the display changes as shown.
T uner Functions 59 US Note • Residents in Canada pl ease see info rmation abo ut XM Canada at the follow ing webpage: (http://www.xmradio.ca/). Connecting the XM Radio Before operating the system, connect the XM Connect-and-Play antenn a to the XM jack.
60 US Selecting channels by inputting the channel number directly (Direct Tuning) 1 Press FUNCTION +/– repeatedly until “XM” appears in the front panel displa y. 2 Press D.TUNING. 3 Enter the channel num ber using the number buttons . 4 Press . The selected channel is tune in.
T uner Functions 61 US You can select a preset channel from 1 to 30. Note • The pres et channel informatio n will be u pdated depending on the service provi ded by the XM Satellite Rad io Inc.
62 US By adjusting the remote signal, you can control your TV with the supplied remote. Note • When you repl ace the batter ies of the rem ote, the code numbe r may reset itsel f to the default (SONY) setting.
Other Operations 63 US Note • Dependin g on the TV, yo u may not be able to control your TV or to use some of the buttons ab ove. • The TV mode turns off whe n you do not operate the remote for 10 seconds.
64 US * Except for North American models. Operating for the THEATRE SYNC function Point the remote to the direction of TV and this system, then press THEATRE SYNC once. While transmitt ing the code from the remote, the TV button flashes. If this function does not work, change the transmit time.
Other Operations 65 US You can set the system to turn off at a preset time, so you can fall asleep listening to music. You can preset the time in 10 minutes decrements. Press SLEEP. Each time you press this button, the minutes display (the remaining time) changes as follows: To check the remaining time Press SLEEP once.
66 US You can set 2 kinds of playback restrictions for the desired disc. • Custom Parental Control You can set playback restrictions so that the system will not play inappropriate disc s. • Parental Control Playback of some DVD VIDEOs can be limited according to a pred etermined level such as the age of the users.
Adv a nced Settings and Adjustments 67 US To play a disc for which Custom Parental Control is set 1 Insert the disc for which Custom Parental Control is set. The [CUSTOM PARENTAL CONTROL] display appears. 2 Enter your 4-digit password using the number buttons, then press .
68 US 5 Press X / x to select [STANDARD] , then press . The selection items for [STANDARD] are displayed. 6 Press X / x to select a geographic area as the playback limitatio n level, then press .

70 US 5 Press C / c to select a setting. • [STANDARD]: when installing all the speakers normally. • [NO CENTER]: w hen installing t he front and surround speakers. • [NO SURROUND]: when installing the center and front speakers. • [FRONT ONLY]: when installing the front speakers.
Adv a nced Settings and Adjustments 71 US Note • In o rder to enjo y the surr ound sound af ter you chang e the positi on of the spea kers, it is r ecommended you set [SPEAKER FORMATION] , and then set [AUTO CALIBRATION]. • To set [AUTO CALIBRATION], y ou need to connect the supplied ca libration mi c.
72 US face the calibration mic, and there should be no obstruction between the speakers and the calibration mic. Be quiet during the measurement. 5 Press X / x to select [YES], then press . Calibration starts. Note • Avoid being in th e measuremen t area and making noi se during the measurement ( about 1 minute), to av oid meas urement failure.
Adv a nced Settings and Adjustments 73 US By using the Setup Display, you can make various adjustments to items such as picture and sound. For an overall list of Setup Display items, see page 98.
74 US To reset all of the [SETUP] settings 1 Select [RESET] in Step 3 and press . 2 Select [YES] using X / x . You can also quit the process and return to the Control Menu by selecting [NO] here. 3 Press . All the settings explained on pages 74 to 80 return to the default settings.
Adv a nced Settings and Adjustments 75 US Choose settings according to the TV to be connected. Select [SCREEN SETUP] in the Setup Display. To use the display, see “Using the Setup Display” (page 73). The default settings are underlined. x [TV TYPE] Selects the aspect ratio of the connected TV (4:3 standard or wide).
76 US Note • If the pl ayback picture bec omes distorted , set [YC B C R ] to [RGB]. • If the HDMI OUT ja ck is connected to equi pment with a DVI jack, [RGB ] signals will be auto matically output even when you sele ct [YC B C R ].
Adv a nced Settings and Adjustments 77 US Use this to set up playback related and other settings. Select [CUSTOM SETUP] in the Setup Display. To use the display, see “Using the Setup Display” (page 73). The default settings are underlined. x [PAUSE M ODE] (DV D VIDEO/DVD- R/ DVD-RW only) Selects the picture in pause mode.
78 US To obtain the best possible surround sound, set for the size of the speakers you have connected and their distance from you r listening position. Then use the test tone to adjust the level and the balance of the speakers to the same level. Select [SPEAKER SETUP] in the Setup Display.
Adv a nced Settings and Adjustments 79 US x [DISTANCE (SURROUND)] The default distance setting for the speakers in relation to the liste ning position is shown below. When you set the distance using the Quick S etup (page 18), the settings is automatically displayed.
80 US The Setup Display appears. 4 Press X / x repeatedly to select [SPEAKER SETUP], then press or c . 5 Press X / x repeatedly to select [TEST TONE], then press or c . 6 Press X / x repeatedly to select [ON ], then press . You will hear the test ton e from each speaker in sequence.
Additional I nformation 81 US On placement • Place the sys tem in a locati on with adequ ate ventilation t o prevent h eat build-up in the system. • At high volu me, over lon g periods of time, the ca binet becomes hot to the touch. This is no t a malfunction.
82 US On handling discs • To keep the disc clean, handle the disc by its edge. Do not touch the surface. • Do not stick paper or tape on the disc. • Do not expose the disc to direct sunlight or heat sources such as hot ai r ducts, or leave it in a car parked in direct sunlight as the temperature may rise considerably inside the car.
Additional I nformation 83 US • If the HDMI OUT jack is used for video o utput, changing th e [HDMI RESOLUTI ON] setting in [SCREEN SETUP] may s olve the pro blem (page 75).
84 US The sound lo ses stereo effec t when you play a VIDEO CD, a CD, or an MP3. • Set [AUDIO] to [STEREO] by pressing AUDIO (page 43). • Make sure t he system is connected p roperly. The surround ef fect is difficult t o hear when you are playing a Do lby Digital, DTS, or MPEG audio sound trac k.
