21 Getting Started Y ou can c harge the battery after attaching the “InfoLITHIUM ” battery pack (P series) (p.134) to your camcorder . • Y ou cannot use an NP-FP3 0 battery pack with your camcorder . (See the reverse side of the battery pack for the model number .
22 5 The CHG (charge) lamp turns off when the battery is fully charged. Disconnect the AC Adaptor from the DC IN jack on your camcorder . • Disconne ct the AC Adaptor holding both your camcorder and the DC plug. T o remove the battery pack Slide the POWER switch to OFF (CHG).
23 Getting Started On the battery pack • Before changing the battery pa ck, slide the POWER s witch to OFF (CHG). • The CHG (charge) lamp flashes during charging, or BA TTER Y INFO (p.47) w ill not be correctly displayed under t he following conditions.
24 T o record, slide the PO WER switch to turn on the respective lamp. When using it for the first time, the [CLOCK SET] screen appears (p.27). 1 T urn on the power by sliding the PO WER switch in the direction o f the arrow while pressing the green button in the center .
25 Getting Started Open the LCD screen 90 degrees to the camcorder ( 1 ), then rotate it to the best angle to record or play ( 2 ). • Be careful not to press the buttons on the LCD frame accidentally when you open or adjust the LCD screen.
26 Y ou can play back reco rded pictures (p.36, 42), or change the settings (p.64) using the touch panel. T ouch the buttons displayed on the screen. Suppor t the rear of the LCD panel with the palm of your left hand. Then, touch the buttons displayed on the screen.
27 Getting Started Set the date and time when using this camcorder for the f irst time. If you do not set the date and time, the [CLOCK SET] screen appears ev ery time you turn on your camcorder or slide the POWER switch.
28 A new 8cm D VD-R, D VD -R W, or D VD+R W is required for recording (p.16) . • Remov e dust or fingerprints from the disc bef orehand, using the cleaning cl oth supplied with your camcorder (p .131). 1 Check that the power of y our camcorder is on.
29 Getting Started 4 Close the disc cover . The [DISC ACCESS] screen appears. It may take some time to recognize the disc depending on the disc type and condition. x DV D - R Y ou can star t recording immediately after [DISC A CCESS] disappears from the LCD screen.
30 • After your camcorder reco gnizes the disc, d isc information suc h as the date yo u started to use it and information on previously recorded areas appears for about 8 seconds. The informati on on previously recorded areas may not be displayed correctly depending on the co ndition of the disc.
31 Getting Started By recording in the 16:9 (wide) mode, you can enjoy wide-ang le, high-resolution pictures. • If you intend to view pictures on a wide TV , recording in the 16:9 (wid e) mode is recommended. 1 Slide the PO WER switch in the direction of the arrow to light up the (Mo vie) lamp .

33 Easy Handycam - using your camcorder with automa tic settings Easy Handycam operation is a function for maki ng nearly all settings automatic with just one press of the EASY button. Y our camcorder automatically carrie s out the var ious adjustments required for shooting, so no detailed settings are required.

38 Finalizing makes the recorded DVD compatible for playback with D VD devices and D VD drives of computers. W ith Easy Handycam operation, your D VD Handycam sets up the following options automatically . Therefore, you can finalize a disc easily . – creating a D VD menu to display images as thumbnails on a DVD player , etc.
39 Easy Handycam - using your camcorder with automa tic settings Finalizing a disc T ouch the LCD screen in the following steps. • Do not apply shock or vibration to your camc orde r , and do not disconnect the AC adaptor during finalizing. • The shorter the amount of material record ed, the longe r it takes for finalizing.

45 Recording/Playback brightness. r (No flash): Records without flash. • The recommended distance to th e subject when using the built-in flash is 0.3 to 2.5 m (1 to 8 feet). • Remove an y dust from the surface of the flash lamp before using it. Flas h effect may be impaired if heat discoloration or du st obscures the lamp.

53 Recording/Playback • When you play back a picture recorded in 16:9 (wide) aspect ratio on a 4:3 TV not compatible with the 16:9 (wide) signal, set [TV TYPE] to [4:3].
54 Finalizing makes the recorded DVD compatible for playback with D VD devices and D VD drives of computers. • Playback compatibility with any D VD device is not guaranteed.

58 A finalized disc recorded with your camcorder can be pl ayed back on a DVD device, etc. (p.54). DVD+R W discs c an be played back without finalizing.
59 Playback on DVD d evices • Do not u se the 8cm CD ad aptor w ith an 8cm D VD as it may ca use a malfunction. • Even when y o u use a D VD+RW, y ou must finalize the disc (p.5 4). Otherwise, it ma y cause a malfunct ion. Use a D VD driv e that supports 8cm discs, and a D VD playback application must have been installed on your computer .
60 The date the disc was first used is recorded on the v o lume label of the disc. <e.g.> When the disc was first u sed at 6:00 pm on January 1st 2006: 2006_01_01_ 06H00M_PM Images are stored in the following folder s o n the disc.
61 Using the Recorded disc ( DVD-RW/DVD+RW) Y ou can record additio nal material on the finalized D VD-RWs (VIDEO mode)/ D VD+RWs b y following the steps below if there is space to r ecord on the disc. When using the finaliz ed D VD- R W (VR mode) disc, you can record additional material on the disc without any additional steps.
62 Formatting makes the recorded disc new and reusable by deleting all the data recorde d on the disc. The recording capac ity of the disc is recovered by formatting it. • A DVD-R cannot be formatted. Replace it with a new disc. Formatting a finalized disc * T o use a DVD menu or a Photomovie on a D VD+R W, the di sc must be finalized (p.
63 Using the Recorded disc ( DVD-RW/DVD+RW) • During Easy Handycam operation (p.33), t he screen in step 5 does not appear e ven if you insert a D VD-RW in your ca mcorder. Procee d to step 7 . • Y ou cannot format a disc that has been protected on other devices.

69 Using the Setup items Y ou can fix the brightness of a picture manually . When record ing in doors on a clear day , for instance, y ou can av oid backlight shadows on people next to the win d o w by fixing the e x posure to that of the wall side of the room.
70 Automatically activ ates the electronic shutter to adjust th e shutter speed when recording in bright conditions if you set it to [ON] (the default setting). Y ou can select and adjust the focal point to aim it at a subject not located in the center of the scr een.
71 Using the Setup items Y ou can record pictures at a maximum of 16 times the sensitivity of NightShot in dark places. Set [SUPER NS] to [ON] while the NIGHTSHOT switch is set to ON. and [”SUPER NS”] flash on the scre en. T o cancel the setting, set [SUPER NS] to [OFF].

Connect your camcorder to the wall outlet using the supplied AC Adaptor for this operation. Insert the disc or “Memory Stick Duo” on which still images are stored into your camcorder and turn on the power of the printer .
