9 Introducti on A Busy indicator Indicat es the driv e status. Lit (green) : The power is on. Lit (orange): The drive i s read ing dat a, playin g a music CD, or writing data (pa cket writing). Blinking (orang e): The driv e is writing d ata (disc-at-on ce or t rack-at- once) .
10 B Setup Placing the Drive Attach the supplied stand as illustrated below to use the drive vertically. Position the drive so that the stand straddles the two anti-vibration pads on the drive bottom and then press it into place. Place the drive as illustrated below to use the drive horizontally.

13 Setu p 3 Connect th e other end o f the i.L INK cabl e to yo ur co mputer. Note We rec ommend that you c onnec t the driv e dire ctly to you r com puter's i.LIN K conn ector. 4 When the compu ter is ready, confi rm tha t the dri ve is de tected.
14 Windows X P With Windows XP, first confirm that there are no programs running and that the drive's busy indicator is not lit, and then disconnect the i.
15 Setu p Connection U sing i.LIN K i.LINK devices are connected in series u sing i.LINK cables. This is sometimes referred to as “daisy chain” connection. Branching also possib le • With devices that have 3 or more i.LINK connectors, it is possible to create bran ches mi d-way t hroug h the i .
16 Care must b e taken to ensure that no path loop s back on it self. The digital signal passes through all the connected i.LINK cables. Circular cable connections must be avoid ed to prevent signals from r eturning to the device from which they originated.

20 B Operation Using the Drive Use the supplied software to create discs and play back DVDs. Refer to the documentation of each softwa re for details about their operation.
21 Oper ati on Usin g soft ware o ther th an th e suppli ed so ftware (such as gen eric s oftwa re, shareware, or freeware) to write data to disc with this drive is not under warranty and Sony offers no customer serv ice if pr oblems arise fr om using such software.

25 Oper ati on You can use a variety of discs with the drive to write data. Refer to the table below to find the type of disc that matches what you want to do. Note You can acce ss/pl ay back the da ta writ t en t o the di scs ab ove with mo st drives/pla yers tha t support their formats.
26 CD-R and CD-RW Discs The DVD/CD RW drive can write to CD-R and CD-RW d iscs, when used with writing software. The ability of another mod el of CD-ROM drive to play (or read data) written by the DVD/CD RW drive depends on having the appropriate software settings when writing to the disc.
27 Oper ati on Also, d ependi ng on th e parti cular dr ive-dis c combi nation, some CD- R and CD-RW discs may not be readable in som e drives due to variations in disc quality and d rive characteristics from o ne manufa cturer to another.
28 Precautions when Wr iting Data to Disc Write speed and compatible discs • When writing data to disc at high speeds, you must use the appropriate type of dis c. • Configure the writing speed throu gh your writing software. For d etails about the setting procedures, refer to your writing software documen tation.
