20 Turning on the power Set the P OWER switch to ON. The power of the fla sh unit turns on. • When the power of the flash unit is turned on, the LCD panel lights up.
Prep arations 21 Power save mode When th e camera o r flas h unit i s not u sed for three minutes , the flash uni t chang es to power save mode to save the batteries a nd STANDBY indicator appears on the LCD panel. • During wir eless flash photography ( page 54), the flash unit changes to power save mod e after 60 minutes.

24 LCD panel il luminator Illumi nates the data pa nel at low-light levels. Press the button. • The LCD panel is illuminated for ap proximately e ight seconds. This pe riod is extended if the flash or camer a is used during this tim e. • Press the button again whi le the LCD panel is illum inated to exti nguish the LCD pa nel il lumi nato r.

Basi cs 27 When th e correct exposu re has been obtained for the photo just take n, the TEST but ton on t he contro l panel b links in green. • The photo will be under-exposed bec ause of a lack of luminesce nce if taken before charging is comple te.
28 The range that can be displayed on the LCD pan el is from 1.5 m to 28 m (0.7 m to 28 m for downward boun ce; see page 41). When th e distance is beyond thi s range, or is lit on either side of the Flash range. • The flash range is no t shown when using flash boun ce above, with wirele ss flash, or when off-c amera cab les are u sed.
Basi cs 29 Using flash in eac h recordi ng mode of th e camera This section explains how to use the fla sh unit in each recordi ng mode of the camera. Aperture pr iority fl ash photogr aphy (A) 1 Select the A mode on th e camera. 2 Press the MO DE button to dis play [ ].
30 Shutter sp eed prior ity flash photogr aphy (S) 1 Select the S m ode on the c amera. 2 Press the M ODE button to display [ ]. • Fill- flash is sele cted. 3 Set the shutte r speed, and focus the subject. 4 Press the shu tter button w hen chargin g is comple te.
Applications 31 A pp li ca ti ons Test-flash You can try a test flash before shoot ing. Check the ligh t level using the test flash when you use a flas h meter, etc., in the manua l flash (M) mode. Press the TEST button when the TEST button l ights up i n amber.
32 Zoom flash cover age Auto zoom This flash unit automatically swi tches optimum flash coverage (zoo m flash coverage) to c over a range of focal lengt hs from 24 mm to 105 mm when photographi ng (auto zoom). Normally, you do not ne ed to switch the fla sh coverag e manually.
Applications 33 Manual zoom You can manu ally set th e flash coverage regardless of th e focal length of the lens in use (manual zoom). Press the ZOOM button to select the flash cover age to be set. • The zoom cove rage is changed in th e following o rder.
34 Built -in wide panel (16 mm zoom angle) Pulling out the built-in wide pane l expands flash cove rage to a focal lengt h of 16 mm. Pull out the wide pane l and set it at the front of flash tube, and then pu sh back the bounce s heet. • [WIDE] is displayed on the LCD panel.
Applications 35 Flash cove rage & focal le ngth The larg er th e focal length fi gure of the le ns on a came ra, the further a way a subjec t can be p hotograph ed to ta ke up th e full scre en; but the area that can be covered be comes s maller.
36 Bounce flash Using the flash unit with a wall directly behin d the subject produces stron g shadows on the wall. By directin g the flash u nit at the ce iling y ou can illu minate th e subject w ith reflected light , reducing the int ensity of the sh adows and producing a softer lig ht on the screen.
Applications 37 Rotate the flas h unit upwa rds or to the lef t and right while holding the c amera firmly. • appe ars on th e LC D panel . The fla sh may be s et to the following angles.
38 • When the flash is rotated upwards, the f lash range is not di splayed on the LCD panel. High-speed sync (pag e 47) i s also cleared. • When the flash is rotated upwards, the bounce i ndicator doe s not appea r. • Use a white cei ling or wall to reflect t he flash .
Applications 39 When the fla sh is bounce d upwards Deter mine the angl e in relati on to the follo wing table. Using the bou nce she et The bounce she et creates a highli ght in the subje ct's eyes and make s the subject look mo re vibrant. • The bounce she et is pulled out when the wide panel is pull ed out.
40 90° sidew ays bounce When the bounc e angle is set to 90° s ideways and 0° upwards while shooti ng in the portrait po sition, the top and bottom of the photo ma y darken. In this case , use the built-i n wide panel or set the boun ce angle to 0° sideways.
Applications 41 Close-up p hotograph y (downward bou nce) Tilt the flash sli ghtly downwards when photographi ng objects between 0. 7 m and 1.5 m fro m the ca mera t o ensu re accura te illu minatio n. Rotate the flas h downwards w ith holding the camera firmly.

Applications 43 Manual flash ( M) Norm al TTL flas h metering a utomati cally ad justs the fl ash intensity to provide the proper ex posure for the subje ct. Manual flas h provides a fixed flash intensity irrespec tive of the bright ness of the subjec t and the camera settin g.
44 2 Press the TTL/M button to display on the LCD panel. • The modes change in the following order. , , 3 Press the g or G button to select the p ower level to be set.
Applications 45 • When the shutter button i s pressed h alfway do wn, the di stance at which the proper exposur e is obtained appear s on the LCD panel. • In manua l flash ph otography, if the power l evel is set at 1/1 th en the flash will go off at fu ll power.
46 TTL flash Manual f lash pro vides a fix ed flash intensity irrespec tive of the brightnes s of the subject and the camera setting. TTL* flash measures the light from the subjec t that is reflected th rough the lens.
Applications 47 High-speed sync ( HSS) High-spee d sync eliminates the restrictions of fl ash sync speed and enable s the flash to be use d through the en tire shutt er speed rang e of the camera.
48 Multiple flash (MULTI) The fla sh is trig gered a nu mber of times whi le the s hutter is open (m ultiple fla sh). Multiple flash all ows motion of the sub ject to be c aptured in a photogra ph for late r analysis . • The camera must be set to the M mode fo r multiple fla sh photography.

50 4 Press the f or F button to select the number of flashes. • The numbe r of flashes may be selecte d from the foll owing. - -, 100, 90, 80, 70, 60, 50, 45, 40, 35, 30 , 25, 20, 15, 10 , 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 , 4, 3, 2 • Keep th e f or F button pr essed down to repeated ly change the val ue.

Applications 53 Maximum num ber of continuous flashes The maximum number of conti nuous flashes during mu ltiple flash phot ography is limite d by the char ge in the batter y.
54 Wireless fl ash mode (WL) Photogra phs taken with th e flas h unit at tached t o the c amera are flat as shown in photo 1 . In such cases, remove the flash unit from the camera and positi on it to obtain a more th ree-dimension al effect as shown in phot o 2 .
Applications 55 Wir eless Fl ash Range The wireless flash uses a light signal from the fl ash as a trigger to operate the off - camera flash uni t. Follow the points below when position ing the camer a, flash, and subject. • Photograp h in dark locations i ndoors.
56 Distance camera-H VL-F58AM-subj ect • The distances in the above table assum e the use of ISO 100. If ISO 400 is used the dis tances m ust be mu ltiplied by a fa ctor of t wo (assum e a lim it of 5 m ). • The flash range is no t displayed on the LCD pa nel when using wirel ess flash.
Applications 57 Openin g and closin g the mi ni-stan d • The mini-st and is collaps ible and must be open when used. Attachi ng and remo ving th e mini- stand • Use the sup plied mini-s tand when the fl ash unit is separat e from the camera.

Applications 59 • For details, see “Combinatio n of camera, off-c amera flash and contr oller.” • You can use s everal off -camera fl ashes at t he same t ime. • In this man ual, “con troller” mea ns the flash uni t attached to a camera , and “off- camera fla sh” means the flas h unit removed from a camera for use.
60 *4 This flash unit has two wire less control modes, [CTR L1] and [CTRL2]. The wireless controller indicator o n the LCD panel is displayed as follows. [CTRL1] mode: [C TRL+] When using HVL-F58AM/HVL-F42AM as off-camera flash, select this mode. [CTRL2] mode: [C TRL] When using HVL-F56AM/HVL-F36AM as off-camera flash, select this mode.

62 5 Make sure that the b uilt-in flash a nd flash unit are fully charged . • “ ” i s lit in the view finder when the built -in flash is fully c harged. • When the flas h unit is fully char ged in the wireless fla sh mode, the AF illuminato r on the front blinks , and the TEST button is li t in amber.

64 [2] Wireless flash pho tograph y withou t buil t-in flash o f camera You can take a photo with wireless flash by us ing 2 flash units, one as a cont roller and the other as an off-c amera flas h unit, even if the camera does not have a built-i n flash.

70 • In this mode, ADI metering will be canceled and Pre-flash TTL metering will be used au tomatica lly (page 43) . • High-spe ed sync in the P mode cannot be used when the flash is c onnected with th e off-cam era cable FA-CC1AM ( optional). • All the fl ash units are at the same power leve l.

72 AF illuminator In low-light or when subject contrast is low, whe n the shutter button is press ed halfwa y down for Auto Focus, the r ed lam p on the front o f the fl ash unit will l ight. This i s the AF illu minator used as an aid in Aut o Focus.
Applications 73 Reset to t he default set tings Press the MO DE and TTL/M bu ttons toge ther for three seconds. Most fla sh functions re turn to thei r default sett ings.

Additional Information 81 Additi ona l I n f orma ti on Notes on use While shooti ng • This flash unit g enerates strong l ight, so it shou ld not be used dire ctly in front of the eyes . • Do not use the f lash 20 t imes in a ro w or in qui ck succ ession in order to preve nt heating and degradation of the camera and flas h unit.
82 • Remove the batter ies only a fter turn ing the po wer off and waiting several minutes , when changing the batt eries. The batterie s may be hot, depend ing on the batte ry type. Re move them carefu lly. • Remove and store the batteries when you do not int end to use the camera for a long time .
Additional Information 83 Maintenance Remove th is unit from th e camera. Clean t he flash with a dry soft clot h. If the flash has been in cont act wit h sand, wi ping will damage the surf ace, and it sh ould therefor e be cleaned gently usin g a blower.
