16 GB When connecting a video deck Connect the video deck to the TV using a video cord (not supplied). However, do not connect this unit to the TV through the video deck. Otherwise, you may experience video leakage when watching video images from this system.

Before using the system, you can make the minimu m basic adju stments (LANGUAGE SETUP, SCREEN SETUP, SPEAKER SETUP*) in QUICK SETUP.
20 GB 8 (MHC-GN999D/MHC-GN999DS/ MHC-GNZ88D only) Press V or v repeatedly to select the front speaker distance from your listening position, the n press ENTER. You can set from 1.0 to 7.0 meters. Repeat this step to adjust the center and surround speaker distance.
Getting Started 21 GB Operating the THEATRE SYNC function Point the remote to the direction of the T V and this unit, then pre ss THEATRE SYNC. If this function does not work, change the transmission time. The transmission time varies depending on the TV.
22 GB About DVD VIDEO software types and the conversion method The DVD VIDEO software can be divided into 2 types: • Film-based software Film-based software is der ived from film and displays the images at 24 frames per second.
Disc – Playbac k 23 GB Use the buttons on the unit for the operation. 1 Press Z OPEN/CLOSE. The disc tray slides out. 2 Load a disc with the label side facin g up on the disc tray. To load additional discs, press DISC SKIP/EX-CHANGE to rotate the disc tray.

26 GB 1 While playing a disc, press x to stop playback. “RESUME” appears in the display. If “RESUME” does not appear, Resume Play is not available. 2 Press H (or nN on the unit). The system starts playback from the point you stopped the disc in step 1.

Disc – Playbac k 31 GB You can play back DVD-Rs/DVD-RWs in VR mode either according to the originally recorded sequence or to the playlist created on the disc. This function is only available for DVD-Rs/ DVD-RWs in VR mode with a playlist created. 1 Press DISPLAY when playback is stopped.

38 GB 2 Press V or v repeatedly to select (EFFECT), then press ENTER. The options for “EFFECT” appear on the TV screen. 3 Press V or v repeatedly to select the setting you want. The default setting is underlined. • MODE 1 : The image sweeps in from top to bottom of the screen.
Disc – Playbac k 39 GB x If you want to play back a DivX vide o file 1 Press ENTER. The list of files of the selected album appears on the TV screen. 2 Press V or v repeatedly to select the file you want, then press ENTER. The system starts playback from the selected file.
40 GB . You can use the Control M enu on the TV screen to search the following items. As titles, tracks, albums, chapters, indexes, scenes and files are assigned unique numbers o n the disc, you can select the item you want by entering its number.
Disc – Playbac k 41 GB 4 Press V or v repeatedly or the numeric buttons to select the title , chapter, track, index, scene, album or file number you want to search. If you make a mistake, press CLEAR to cancel the number, then select another number.
42 GB 2 Press ENTER. The first scene of the first 9 chapters, titles or tracks appears on the TV screen as follows: If there are more than 9 chapters, titles or tracks “ V ” appears at the bottom right of the screen. Press v repeatedly to select a scene at the bottom row, then press v .

Disc – V arious Functions 45 GB When the sound does not synchronize with the pictures on the screen, you can adjust the delay between the picture and sound. A/V SYNC does not work for MP3 audio tracks and JPEG image files in DATA CD or DATA DVD. 1 Press DISPLAY when playback is stopped.
46 GB 3 Press V or v repeatedly to select (PARENTAL CONTROL), then press ENTER. The options for “PAR ENTAL CONTROL” appear on the TV screen. 4 Press V or v repeatedly to select “ON t ”, then press ENTER. x If you have not ente red a password The display for registering a new password appears on the TV screen.
Disc – V arious Functions 47 GB Limiting playback for children — PARENTAL CONTROL (DVD VIDEO only) The “PARENTAL CONTROL” funct ion allows you to set a playback limitation level. 1 Press DISPLAY when playback is stopped. The Control Menu appears on the TV screen.
48 GB 6 Press V or v repeatedly to select a geographic area as the pla yback limitation level, then press ENTER. The area is selected. When you select “OTHERS t ”, enter the area code for the geographic area you want according to the “Parental Control Area Code List” on page 48 by using the numeric buttons.
Disc – V arious Functions 49 GB Changing the password 1 Press DISPLAY when playback is stopped. The Control Menu appears on the TV screen. 2 Press V or v repeatedly to select (PARENTAL CONTROL), then press ENTER. The options for “PAR ENTAL CONTROL” appear on the TV screen.
50 GB 5 Press V or v repeatedly to select the item you want, then press ENTER. The options for the selected item appear on the TV screen. Example: TV TYPE 6 Press V or v repeatedly to select the setting you want, then press ENTER. The setting is selected and setup is completed.
Disc – V arious Functions 51 GB x TV TYPE (DVD VIDEO only) Select the aspect ratio of the connected TV (4:3 standard or wide). The default setting varies depending on the area. Note Depending on the DVD VIDEO, “4:3 LET TER BOX” may be sel ected automa tically inst ead of “4:3 PAN SCAN” or vi ce versa.

Disc – V arious Functions 53 GB Notes • When you set “TRAC K SELECTION” to “AUTO”, the languag e may change. The “TRA C K SELECTION” se tting has hi gher prior ity than the “AUDIO” setting in “LANGU AGE SETUP” (page 50). However, de pending o n the disc, this function may not be pe rformed.
54 GB Notes • When you change t he settin g, the s ound cuts o ff for a moment. • Depending on the se ttings of other spea kers, the subwoofe r may output excessive so und. • When you play back a DVD VIDEO th at does not have subwoof er output r ecorded, no sound is output from the sub woofer, ev en if “SUBWOOFE R” is set to “YES”.
Disc – V arious Functions 55 GB Notes • When you adjust the speaker distanc e, the sound may cut off for a mo ment. • If each fr ont and surround spe akers are not placed at an equal d istance from your listening position, set the distance acco rding to the cl os es t speaker.
56 GB Adjusting the speaker level by using the test tone (Except for MHC-GNZ77D/ MHC-GNZ55D) 1 Press DISPLAY when playback is stopped. The Control Menu appears on the TV screen. 2 Press V or v repeatedly to select (SETUP), then press ENTER. The options for “SETUP” appear on the TV screen.
Tu n e r 57 GB You can preset up to 20 FM stations and 10 AM stations. You can then tune in any of th ose stations simply by sel ecting the corresponding preset number. Automatic tuning preset You can automatically tune in all of the stations that can be received in your area and then store the frequency of your favourite stations manual ly.
58 GB Manual tuning preset You can manually tune in and store the frequency of your favourite stations. 1 Press FUNCTION +/– repeatedly to select “TUNER FM” or “TUNER AM” (or press TUNER/BAND on t he u nit repeatedly to select “FM” or “A M”).
Tu n e r 59 GB You can listen to a ra dio station either by selecting a preset stati on, or by manually tuning in the station. Listening to a preset radio station — Preset Tuning Before tuning to preset stat ions, be sure to preset them first (see “Presetting radio stations” on page 57).
60 GB 1 Press Z PUSH on deck A or deck B to open the selected deck. 2 Load a tape into deck A or deck B . 3 Push the center of the tape lid to close the deck.
T ape – Playback/T ape – Recording 61 GB You can record a whole disc onto a tape. You can use TYPE I (normal) tape. The recording level is adjusted automatic ally. Use the buttons on the unit for the operation. 1 Load a recordable tape into deck B .
62 GB You can record just the portions you like from a disc, tape or radio program onto a tape. (Except for MHC-GNZ55D) You can also record from connected components (see “Hooking up optional components” on page 81). Use the buttons on the unit for the operation.
Sound Adjustment 63 GB You can reinforce the bass and create a more powerful sound. The GROOVE setting is ideal for music sources, and the V-GROOVE setting is ideal for video sources (movie, etc.
64 GB You can adjust the sound by raising or lowerin g the level of specific frequency band, then store up to three user equalizer settings in the memory . Use the buttons on the unit for the operation. 1 Press EQ BAND/MEMORY. 2 Turn . OPERATION DIAL > clockwise or counterclockwise repeatedly to adjust the freque ncy level.
Sound Adjustment 65 GB You can take advantage of the surround sound simply by selecting one of the s ound fields. They bring the exciting and powerful sound of movie theaters into your home. 1 Press SOUND FIELD. The last selected soun d field appears in the display.
66 GB x SBS MULTI (Sound Broad casting System Multi mode) Performs suitable decoding based on the source to maximize the sound field effect. This mode lets you enjoy audio playback of all types of discs from multiple speakers. x A.F.D. AUTO (Auto Format Direct Auto) The number of sound channels depends on the source.
Sound Adjustment 67 GB Tips • “PRO LOGIC” ligh ts up in the di s play when Pro Logic decod ing is perfor med. • “PRO LO GIC II” ligh ts up in the disp la y when Pro Logi c II Movie/Music mo de decoding is performed. • “VIRTUAL” li gh ts up in the display when “HP VIRTUAL”, “VIRTUAL A”, o r “VIRTUAL B” is selected.
68 GB 6 Start singing along w ith the music and adjust the microphone v olum e by turning MIC 1 LEVEL or MIC 2 LEVEL on the uni t. Note (MHC-GNZ55D only) Use MIC LEVEL on the unit for this operatio n. To adjust the microphone echo (except for MHC-GNZ5 5D) Turn ECHO LEVEL on th e un it to adjust the echo effect.
Sound Adjustment 69 GB • The “KARAOKE PON” setting is automatically changed to “OFF” when you : – turn off the system. – change the function . – connect th e hea dp hones. – turn on th e test ton e. – turn off the Karaoke Mode . – open the disc tray.

72 GB Selecting the scoring mode (Except for MHC-GNZ55D) You can select “SCORE MODE” only when the Karaoke Mode is turned on . Your score is calculated by comparing your voice with the music source. 1 Press DISPLAY once or twice when Karaoke Mode is turned on while playing a disc.
Sound Adjustment 73 GB 6 Press DIRECTION repeatedly to select “ g ” to record on one side. Select “ j ” (or “RELAY ”) to record o n both sides. Tip When record ing on bot h sides: Be sure to start fr om the front side. If you start from the reve rse side, re cording stop s at the end of the revers e side.
74 GB You can set the system to turn off after a certain time, so that you can fall asleep to music. Press SLEEP repeatedly. Each time you press the button, the minute display changes cyclically as follows: 90MIN t 80MIN t 70MIN t … t 10M IN t OFF Other operations Note When the Sl eep Timer is activated , “SLEEP” l ights up in the di splay.
Timer 75 GB Other operations Notes • You cannot sele ct the Play Timer and t he Timer Recording a t the sa me time. • If y ou use t he Pl ay T imer and the S leep Time r at t he same time, the Sleep Timer has priority. • The Pl ay T imer wi ll not be ac tiva ted if th e sys tem is turned on or if “STANDB Y ” flashes in th e display.
76 GB Other operations Notes • You cannot s elect the Pl ay Timer and the Timer Recording a t the sa me time. • If you use the T imer Record ing a nd the Sl eep T ime r at the same ti me, the Slee p Timer has p riority. • The Timer Reco rding will not be activated if the system is turned on or if “STANDBY” flashes in th e display.
Display 77 GB Press ILLUMINATION on the unit repeatedly to select the po wer illuminator you want when the system is turned on. Each time you press the button, the power illuminator changes cyclically.

Display 79 GB Press TIME/TEXT repeatedly during playback to change the time and title information. The time display and title display that you can view on the TV screen depends on the disc you are playing. The time display appears at the top portio n of the TV screen and the title display appears at the bottom portion of the TV screen.
80 GB You can check the date information during playback when Exif* tag is recorded in the JPEG image files. Press DISPLAY repeatedly during playback until the Control Menu for JPEG image files appears on the TV screen.

84 GB I D-LIGHT SYNC OUT jack Connect the D-LIGHT SYNC Controller (not supplied) to this jack. You n eed to connect the D-LIGHT SYNC Controller to a lighting device* (not supplied). The lighting device will react according to the control signals transmitted by the D-LIGHT SYNC Controller upon receiving music source from the system.
T roubleshooting 85 GB Should you encounter a problem with your system, do the fo llowing: 1 Make sure the power cord and speaker cords are connected correctly and firmly. 2 Find your problem in the troubleshooting checklist below and take the indicated corrective action.

T roubleshooting 91 GB One of the following messages may appear or flash in the front panel display during operation. Disc CANNOT PLAY • A disc tha t cannot be played ba ck was inserted. • A DVD VIDEO with unsuppo rted region code was inserted. NO DISC There is no disc on th e di sc tra y.
92 GB On operating voltage Before oper ating the system, chec k th at the operating voltage of the unit is iden tical with the voltag e of you r local powe r supply .
