Connecting a P ower Source 25 Connecting a P o wer Sour ce Y ou can use either A C power or a rechargeable battery pack as a po wer source. Using the A C Adapter 1 Plug the cable attached to the A C adapter (PCGA-A C16V1) into the DC In connector on the notebook.

Connecting a P ower Source 27 T o Charg e the Battery Pack 1 Connect the A C adapter to the notebook. 2 Insert the battery pack. The notebook autom atically charges the battery (the battery indicator light flashes in a double-blink pattern as the battery char ges).

Connecting a P ower Source 29 Hardware T emperature ❑ The A C adapter or the bottom pan el of your notebook may become warm. This is the result of CPU operation and does not indicate a malfunction of the notebook. The actual temperature v aries depending on the peripherals and software you are using and the length of time that the unit is in use.

Y ou can point to, select, drag, and scroll objects on the screen usin g the built-in touchpad. VA I O ® Notebook User Guide 40 Using a Floppy Disk Drive (optional) Y ou can connect a Sony flopp y disk drive (PCGA-UFD5) to the (USB) connector on your computer: T o Connect a Flo ppy Disk Drive Plug the USB cable from the optio nal floppy disk driv e into the (USB) connector on the computer .
Using a Floppy Disk Dri ve (optional) 41 T o Insert a Diskette 1 Hold the diskette with the label side facing up. 2 Gently push the diskette into the dri ve until it clicks into place. T o Remove a Diskett e ❑ When you finish using the diskette, wait until the LED indicator turns off and then press the Eject b utton to remove the disk ette.

Connecting the CD/D VD Dri ve (optional) 43 Connecting the CD/D VD Drive (optional) Y ou can purchase the optional CD-ROM dri ve (PCGA-CD51/A), or DVD dri ve (PCGA-D VD51 /A), to use with your n otebook. If you use any optical dri ve when your notebook i s running on ba ttery power , the battery life will be shorter .

Connecting the CD/D VD Dri ve (optional) 45 T o Insert a Disc 1 Press the Eject b utton. The disc tray slides out. 2 Place the disc in the tray with the label side facing up. Push the disc onto the hub until the disc clicks into place. 3 Close the tray by pushing it gently .

Using Memor y Stick ® Media 59 Inserting a Memor y Stick Media Insert the Memory Stick media into the media slot on the lef t side of the computer until it clicks into place. When the Memory Stick media is properly in place, Sony V isualFlow ™ will automatically launch to display the contents of the Memory Stick .

Using Memor y Stick ® Media 61 3 When the button ejects, push it again and remov e the Memory Stick media. Using MG Memory Stick Media with Data fr om Another Device Memory Stick media can be used with compatible de vices like a Sony digital video camera recorder or digital still camera.

Using P ower Sa vin g Modes 63 Formatting a Memory Stic k Media Memory Stick media is formatted for immediate use when you purchase it. If you need to reformat a Memory Stick media, use the Memory Stick Formatter that is prov ided with the media. F ollow the procedures included here.
VA I O ® Notebook User Guide 64 Normal Mode This is the normal state of your computer when it is in use. The green power indicator light is on in this mode. T o sav e power , you can turn off a specif ic device suc h as the LCD or the hard disk. System Idle Mode This mode is con venient if you do not need to use your computer for a brief period.
Using P ower Sa vin g Modes 65 T o activate System Hi bernation mode T o activ ate System Hibernation mode, press the key combination Fn+F12. T o ret urn to normal mod e T urn on the computer by sliding the po w er switch forward. The computer returns to its previous state.

Adding Memo r y 81 T o av oid damage to a memory module from static electricity , follo w these guidelines: ❑ A void handling and installing memory modules where static electricity can easily be generated (for example, on a thick carpet.) ❑ Before you pick up or touch a memory module, ground you rself by touching a metal surface with your hand.
VA I O ® Notebook User Guide 82 4 Open the display panel, raise the palm rest toward you, turn it o ver , and then set it gently on the keyboard. When you turn the palm rest ov er, gently perform the action in order to a void breaking the attached cable.
Adding Memo r y 83 7 Return the palm rest to its original position by aligning it with the notch on the keyboard and then setting it on the ke yboard. Handle the palm rest gently to av oid breaking the attached cable. Installing a Memory Module Do not touch any part of the motherboard or the other components inside the notebook.
