11 Stand-al one Ope ration - Usi ng the Drive as a DVD Record er B Sta nd-al one O per ation - Us ing t he Dr ive as a DV D Reco rde r Creati ng DVDs You can use this drive as a stand-alone DVD recorder to record videos on DVD+R or DVD+RW discs directly from a connected video cameras or video devices such as VCRs.
12 In stand-alone operation, you can use only DVD+RW or DVD+R discs. Note You cann ot make a ddition al recordi ng on discs that ha ve been c reated using c ompu ters or other DVD recorders by the stand-alon e operation. Three record ing modes are available.
13 Stand-al one Ope ration - Usi ng the Drive as a DVD Record er What are titles and chapters? DVD contents consist of sections, called titles, and smaller sub-sections, called chapters. On this drive, a title is created between the points where you start and sto p a recording.
14 Synchronized reco rding You can record videos on DVD+RW or DVD+R discs while playing them back on your video d evice. Connect the video device to the drive using an AV cable, and the drive will start/stop recording automatically when you start/stop playback on the video device.

[Recor ding] app ears on th e displ ay window an d the RE C butto n lights up duri ng rec ord ing. [SIG] on the disp lay windo w indicat es that t he driv e is receivi ng sig nals from the vi deo device .
18 Manual recording You can start/pause/stop recording manually by operatin g the drive and the connected device re spectively. 1 Connect a v ideo dev ice. See “ Synch roni zed rec ord ing” on page 14 . 2 Turn on the driv e. The busy i ndica tor li ghts up i n green.

20 7 Press STO P to stop reco rdin g. [STOP] app ears on the d isplay wind ow, and st op pla yback on the vi deo de vice. Wait fo r a moment until [Ready] appears. Note on using a DVD+R disc To play a recorde d DVD+R on DVD devices, you need to finalize the disc after recordin g ( p.
21 Stand-al one Ope ration - Usi ng the Drive as a DVD Record er Addition al op erations Pres s RE C MO DE. Each time you press the button, [HQ], [SP], or [SLP] appears in sequence. See page 12 for details on the recording mode. Note You cannot do this opera tion durin g recordin g.
22 You can set automatic playback mo de on the disc before recording. In the default setting ([No]), the disc is to start playback with displaying the menu screen of the title recorded.

24 Notes • Dep endin g on the disc c ondition , recordi ng condit ion, or DV D device, disc s may not play even if th e discs ar e final ized. • The drive can fi nalize only the di scs r ecorded on this dri ve. • It may take about five m inutes or more to finalize a disc.
25 Stand-al one Ope ration - Usi ng the Drive as a DVD Record er 7 Press FUNCTION/ENTER. Erasing of the di sc starts. When erasing is complete, [Ready] appears. 8 Eject th e disc. Note You can not era se tit le by ti tle, or ch ap ter by ch apte r. Double layer discs may encounter a compatibility problem with some DVD players.
26 B Using the Drive as an E xternal DV D Drive Connecting the drive to a computer Connect the drive to a computer using the supplied USB cable to us e the drive as an external DVD drive. When connecting the drive to your computer for the first time, you need to install the driver software.
27 Using the D rive as an External DV D 3 Turn on y our com puter. 4 Connect th e other en d of the USB c able to y our com puter. Note Pleas e conn ect t he driv e dir ectly t o a U SB conn ector on th e comput er. 5 Install the dr ive on the comp uter.
28 2 Check [Ins tall fr om a li st or s pecific loca tion (Ad vance d)] ( 1 ), then click [Next] ( 2 ). The following screen will appear. 3 Check [Se arch for th e best driver i n thes e locatio ns.

The followin g screen will appear. 5 Click [ Finish ], and c ontin ue to in stall the writi ng so ftware in the supplie d soft ware dis c followi ng the instruc tions on the screen .
30 On Windows 2000 1 Insert the suppli ed softwar e disc into a driv e on the compu ter. The following screen will appear. 2 Click [Next]. The following screen will appear. 3 Che ck [Sea rch f or a s uitab le dr ive r for my devic e (recommen ded)] ( 1 ), then clic k [Next] ( 2 ).
31 Using the D rive as an External DV D 4 Check [Spec ify a l ocation] ( 1 ), then c lick [Nex t] ( 2 ). The followin g screen will appear. 5 Click [Browse] ( 1 ), br owse for th e drive y ou inser t the softwa re disc ( 2 ), then cli ck [OK] ( 3 ). The followin g screen will appear.
32 7 Click [Yes ]. The following screen will appear. 8 Click [Fi nish], and continue to ins tall the writi ng softwar e in the supplied software disc fo llowin g the i nstruction s on th e scre en. The disc onne ction procedu re var ies dep ending on yo ur OS.
33 Using the D rive as an External DV D About software Use the supplied software to create discs and play back DVDs. The supplied software disc contains the following software. (Refer to the PDF or online documentation of each software for details about their operation.
34 • Using software other than the supplied software (such as commercially available software, share ware, or freewar e) to write data to disc with this drive i s not un der w arranty and So ny pr ovides no custo mer ser vice. • Make sure that the supplied writing software and other writing software do not coexist on your compu ter.

37 Dis cs CD Notes • Only round disc s should be used with th is drive. N ever use odd -shaped d iscs (stars, h earts, card shape , etc.), othe rwise th e drive ma y be dama ged. • It is not guaranteed to write to or play back 99-minut e discs. • With 8 cm di scs, you must pla ce the drive horizontall y.
38 We rec omme nd th at yo u only use di scs for whi ch op erat ion h as bee n guaranteed. You can obtain the latest list of writable discs for which operation with this drive has been guaranteed at the user support web site (see page 45 for details).
39 Dis cs Features of writable discs You can use various discs with the drive to write data. Refer to the table b elow to fi nd the ty pe of disc tha t match es what you want to do. Note You can acce ss/play back th e data writ ten to the discs ab ove wit h most drives /players that support their formats.
40 Writable CDs and compatibility The drive can write to CD-R and CD-RW discs, wh en used with writing software. To play back (read ) these CD-R and CD-RW discs on oth er CD-ROM drives, make settings on the writing software according to the purpose of the data.
41 Dis cs Further, because of the differences in quality and characteristics betwee n vari ous CD-RO M driv e, CD pl ayer , CD- R di sc, an d CD -RW di sc manuf acture rs, pla yback may not b e possibl e depe nding o n the c ombina tion.
42 Precautions on writ ing/playin g discs Write speed and compatible discs • When writing data to disc at high speeds, you m ust use the appropriate type of dis c. • Set the writing speed on your writing softwar e. For details about the setting procedures, refer to your writing software documenta tion.
43 Dis cs About cop y controlled CDs This pr oduct i s desig ned to play bac k discs conform ing to th e compa ct disc (CD) standard. Audio CDs encoded with copyright p rotection technology are now marketed by various record compan ies.
