9 1 Introduc tion About T reeFrog ® Ar chitecture The Spectra 2K librar y uses T reeFrog architecture f or robotic tape libraries dev eloped by Spectra Logic. T reeFrog architecture can be configured with 15 or 30 car tridge slots and one or two ta pe driv es.
Chapter 1. Introduct ion 10 Con ventions U sed This guide uses special conv enti ons to high light notes, cautions, and warnings. These conv entions are explained belo w: Note: Rea d Notes for additional information or suggestions about the topic or procedur e being discusse d.
11 2 Installing the Librar y T o install the librar y , complete th e steps outlined in these sections: •Unpacking the Li brar y •Attaching to the Ho st Computer •Attachi ng More than One SCSI D.
Chapter 2. Ins talling the Lib rary 12 1. Remo v e the cardboa rd tray from the top of the bo x. This tray contains the accessories f or the librar y (see Library Accessories on page 13). 2. Remo v e the top piece of fo am protecting the librar y . 3.
Chapter 2. In stalling t he Librar y 13 Caution: T ake care when removing these pieces not to damage the door sensor cable (th e white cable that runs along the right side of the library). Note: Rememb er to sa v e all packaging ma terials in the ev ent that you need to ship the library at a later date.
Chapter 2. Ins talling the Lib rary 14 Attaching to the Host C o mputer Follo w this procedure to connec t the libr ar y as the only uni t on a SCSI bus. T o attach more than one SCSI device, read Attac hing More than On e SCSI Device on page 18, as w ell as the documentat ion for the other device(s ) on the bus.
Chapter 2. In stalling t he Librar y 15 2. The librar y interface can be identified b y its part number sticker , also located on the back panel of the library (Figure 2-4).
Chapter 2. Ins talling the Lib rary 16 L VD/SE SCSI Bus The L VD/SE librar y oper ates in either single-ended or low-v oltage-differential SCSI mode, depending on the typ e of bus that is atta ched. Note: The entire bus (includi ng host bus ad apter , devices, and termination) must be L VD to operate in L VD mode.
Chapter 2. In stalling t he Librar y 17 5. Determine the correct specifi cations for the SCSI terminator as described in SCSI T er minator Requirements on p age 81. Attach a SC SI terminator to the free SCSI connector on the librar y , as shown in Figure 2-5.
Chapter 2. Ins talling the Lib rary 18 Attaching More than One SCSI Device T o attach more than one device to the same SCSI bus, review th e following sections: • V eri fying the SCSI Bu s Requir ements , b elow . • Chan ging S CSI IDs as Necessary on page 19.
Chapter 2. In stalling t he Librar y 19 Chang ing SCSI IDs as Necessary Note: Do not change the default SCSI ID setti ngs f or the library or the driv es unless they are s et to the same value(s) alr eady in use by other devices on the s ame SCSI bus or unless required by y our sof tware.
Chapter 2. Ins talling the Lib rary 20 P ow ering On the Librar y and Host Comput er After correctly connecting the library to the hos t computer , per form the steps described in the follo wing sections.
Chapter 2. In stalling t he Librar y 21 Inserting Media The simplest wa y to inser t media into your librar y is to load the DCM(s) with tapes before installing the DCM(s) in the librar y . T o do this, inser t tapes one at a time into the individual slots in the DCM, with the clea r plastic window of the ca r tridges facing aw ay from the drives.
Chapter 2. Ins talling the Lib rary 22 P osition the DCM so that t he holes on the side of the DCM line up with the pegs inside the libra ry ( Figure 2-7). Note: For additional inf ormation regardin g the correc t positioning of the DCM, see Fig ure 4-5 on pa ge 37.
Chapter 2. In stalling t he Librar y 23 5. Close and lock the librar y door . Reading and Writing Da ta to T ape Before performing store and restore operat ions with the librar y , use your backup software to test library/host c ommunications. Re fer to y our backup softw are documentation for instruc tions on specif ic testing procedures.
Chapter 2. Ins talling the Lib rary 24 U sing Horiz ontal and Rack Moun ted Libr aries Ev ery Spectra 2K librar y can be operated in either a vertical or horizontal position. In v er tical position, the driv es should be located on the bottom of the unit.
25 3 Configuring the Library The Spectra 2K librar y is compatible with most oper ating system s. This chapt er discusse s: • Changing the Libra r y’ s Configur ation • Cus tom Configurations Changing the Librar y ’ s Co nfigura tion The library is conf igured through the config uration switch located on the back panel.
Chapter 3. Configuring the L ibrary 26 The default position of the configuration switch ( 0 ) identifies the library and tape driv es with the follo wing information: • L ibrary Inquiry (or Name): S.
Chapter 3. Configuring the L ibrar y 27 Determin e Y our Con figura t ion The Spectra 2K librar y will r un succ essfully with the attach ed server or host comp uter running most operating system s, and secon dary configuration sw itch cha nges are usually not required.
