2-4 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E If you cannot unlatch the tailgate by push- ing the unlatch switch (1) due to a dis- charged batter y or malfunction, follow the procedures below to unlatch the tailgate from inside the vehicle. 1) F old the rear seat forward f or easier access.
2-5 BEFORE DRIVING 80J23-03E 56KN010 If your v ehicl e is equipped with a tr unk lid unlatch switch (1), push and hold the trunk lid unlatch switch (1) and lift the trunk lid to open the trunk lid. The trunk lid unlatch s witch (1) operates when the ke yless star t system remote con- troller is within the switch’ s operating range.

2-7 BEFORE DRIVING 80J23-03E NO TE: • The maximum operating distance of the remote controller is about 5 m (16 ft.), but this can v a ry dependi ng on the sur- roundings , especially near ot her tra ns- mitting devices such as radio towers or CB (Citizen’ s Band) radios.

2-10 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E Reminder function 80J2016 If the remote controller is not in the vehicle under the following conditions, a buzz er sounds inter mittently for about 2 seconds and the ke yless star t system indicator light on the instrument cluster blinks in red: • When the vehicle speed is over 10 km/h (6 mph).

2-13 BEFORE DRIVING 80J23-03E T o change the old rem ote contr oller codes in your vehic le’ s memory If you ha ve lost one of the remote control- lers, you should change the remote con- troller codes in your v ehicle’ s memor y as soon as possible f or secur ity .
2-14 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E The tur n signal lights will flash once when the doors are lock ed. When the doors a re unlock e d: • The turn signal lights will flash twice. • If the interior light switch is in the “DOOR” position, the interior light will tur n on f o r about 15 seconds and then f ade out.

2-17 BEFORE DRIVING 80J23-03E Theft Deterrent Light 80JM022 This light will blink with the ignition s witch in the “OFF” or “ACC” position. The blink- ing light is intended to deter th eft b y lead- ing others to believ e that the vehicle is equipped with a security system.

2-20 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E Outside Re arview Mirrors 79J033 Adjust the outside rear view mirrors so you can just see the side of yo ur ve h ic le i n th e mirrors. The passenger’ s side mirror is a conv ex (cur v ed surf ace) mirror . Objects seen in this mirror will look smaller and appear far- ther aw a y than when seen in a flat mirror .

2-26 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E Folding Rear Seats The rear seats of y our vehicle ca n be f o lded forw ard to provide additional cargo space. T o fold t he rear seats f orward: SX4 80JM026 SX4 SED AN 80JC086 1) Hook the webbing of the outboard lap- shoulder belts in the belt hangers.

F or SX4 SED AN, push the release but- ton on the top of each split seat, and f old the seatbacks f orward. T o retur n the seat to the nor mal position, follo w the procedure below .

2-29 BEFORE DRIVING 80J23-03E 65D201 65D199 W ARNING (Continued) • Seat belts should never be wor n with the straps twisted and should be adjusted as ti ghtly as is com- fortable to pro vide the protection for whic h they ha ve been d esigned . A slack belt will provide less pro- tection than one which is snug.
2-30 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E Lap-Shoulder Belt Emergenc y Lockin g Retractor (ELR) The seat belt has an emerge ncy loc king retractor (ELR), which is designed to lock the seat belt only dur ing a sudden stop or impact. It also may loc k if you pull the belt across your body very quickly .
2-31 BEFORE DRIVING 80J23-03E T o reduce the r isk of sliding und er the belt during a colli sion, position the lap por tion of the belt across your lap as low on your hips as possible and adjust it to a snug fit by pulling the shoulder por tion of the bel t upward through the latch plate.

2-35 BEFORE DRIVING 80J23-03E Seat Belt I nspection 65D209S P er iodically inspect the seat belts to make sure they work proper ly and are not dam- aged. Check the webbing, buc kles, latch plates, retractors, anchorages and guide loops. Replace any seat belts which do not work proper ly or are damaged.

The seat position sensor provides inf or mation which is used to judge if the dr iv er’ s front air bag shou ld deploy at reduced po wer or at full pow er .

2-55 BEFORE DRIVING 80J23-03E The front passenger sensing system is designed to en able the front passenger’ s front air bag when the system senses a proper ly-seated adult in the front passen- ger’ s seat.
2-56 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E How the System W orks In a frontal collision, the crash sensors will detect rapid deceleration and send a signal to the controller . If the controller judges that the dece leration represents a se v ere frontal crash, the cont roller will tr igger the inflators.

If your v eh icle e ver gets in deep water and the driver’ s floor i s submerged, the air bag controller could be dama ged.

2-60 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E Warning and Indicator Lights Low Tire Pressure W arning Light 52D305 As an added safety f eature, your v ehicle has been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that uses a low tire pressure warning light to inform you when one or more of your tires is signifi- cantly under-inflated.

2-63 BEFORE DRIVING 80J23-03E NO TE: When you disconnect and re-connect the battery , ESP ® system functions other than ABS will be deactiva ted and the slip indica- tor light will blink 1 time per second. For details on how to reactive the ESP ® sys- tems, ref er to “SLIP In dicator Light” in the “OPERA TING Y OUR VEHICLE” section.
2-64 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E Oil Pressure Light 50G051 This light comes on when the igniti on switch is turned to the “ON” position, and goes out when the engin e is star ted. The light will come on and remain on if there is insufficient oil pressure.
2-65 BEFORE DRIVING 80J23-03E AIR B A G Light 63J030 This light monitors inflators, crash sensors, seat belt pretensioners, the front passen- ger sensing system, and corresponding electrical circui ts.
2-66 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E Low Fuel W arning Light 54G343 If this light comes on, fill the fuel tank immediately . When this light comes o n, a ding sounds once to remind y ou to fill the fuel. If you do not fill the fuel, a ding sounds ev er y time when the ignitio n s witch is turned to “ON”.

2-68 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E intellig ent All Whee l Drive (i-A WD) LOCK Indicator Light (if equipped) 79J100 When the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position, this light comes on br iefly so you can check that the light is working.
2-69 BEFORE DRIVING 80J23-03E Tachometer 80JM101 The tachometer indicates engine speed in re volutions per minute . Fuel Gauge 80JM102 When the ignition switch is in the “ON” position, this gauge gives an approximate indication of the amount of fuel in the fu el tank.
2-70 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E Temperature Gauge 80JM103 When the ignition switch is in the “ON” position, this gauge indicates th e engine coolant temp erature. Under normal dr iving conditions, the indicator should stay within the norm al, acceptable temperature ra nge between “H” and “C”.

2-74 BEFORE DRIVIN G 80J23-03E Odometer / Illumination Contr ol Setting When the ignition switch is in the “ON” position, the display (D) shows the odome- ter . If you turn the i ndicator selector knob (2) clockwise or counterclockwise, the displa y will change to th e illumination control set- ting.
