30 T ASCA M DR - 0 8 3 – Pr eparations Preparing the power About the power supply This unit can be powered by 2 AAA batteries or USB bus power . This unit can use AAA alkaline batteries or AAA nickel metal hydride batteries.
T ASCA M DR - 08 31 USB Computer If you connect the unit by USB when its power is ON, or if you turn the unit’ s power ON when it is already connected by USB, a screen appears on this unit’ s display to let you choose whether you want to operate the unit using USB bus power or to connect the unit with the computer by USB.
32 T AS CAM D R- 0 8 T urning the power on When the power is off, slide the / HOLD switch toward . When the startup screen with TASCAM DR-08 appears, release the switch. The unit starts up and the Home Screen opens. T urning the power off When the power is ON, slide the / H OLD switch toward .
T ASCA M DR - 08 33 Inserting and removing microSD car ds Inserting a card 1 Open the microSD card slot cover on the right side panel of the unit. 2 Insert the microSD card in the dir ection of the illustration until it clicks into place. NOTE Whe n this unit is pur chase d new, a microSD car d is alre ady ins er te d in the m icroSD car d slot.

T ASCA M DR - 08 35 Setting the date and time This unit adds date and time information to recorded les using its internal clock. T imer recording also uses the internal clock. 1 Press the SETUP key to open the SETUP menu screen. 2 Use the + / – keys to select the SYSTEM menu item.
36 T ASCA M D R- 0 8 The following pop-up message appears. 8 After the pop-up confirmation message disappears, press the HOME key to return to the Home Screen. 38 T ASCA M D R- 0 8 Connecting monitoring equipment T o monitor with headphones, connect them to the / LIN E OU T jack. T o monitor with an external monitoring system (powered monitor speakers or an amplier and speakers), connect it to the / LIN E OU T jack.
T ASCA M DR - 08 39 stereo for music or oriented with a more focused eld for interviews, for example. Setting the mics to capture localized sound Close the stereo microphone. Set this way , recording is possible in a relatively narrow eld and is useful for interviews and similar situations.
40 T ASCA M DR - 0 8 When placed on a table with the top panel up and viewed from above, the microphones are pointed up, making this setting useful for recording meetings and other situations where you want to record sounds from all around the unit.
T ASCA M DR - 08 41 5 Press the ¯ ( Enter ) key to open the LR SWAP setting screen. 6 Use the + and – keys to set the item to L-R or R-L according to the mic position. 7 Press the ¯ ( Enter ) to confirm t he setting and temporarily show the setting, and then return to the LR SWAP setting screen.

T ASCA M DR - 08 43 In addition to recording with the built-in microphone, this unit can also record the signal from an external microphone, the headphone jack of a portable CD player or other external audio device. Making recording settings Setting the recording quality Before starting recording, set the audio le format.

T ASCA M DR - 08 55 Recording with an external microphone Connect the external microphone to the unit’ s MIC /E XT . I N jack. Point the microphone toward the sound source and put it in a stable place where there is little vibration. On the EXT.INPUT setting screen, set EXT.
56 T AS CAM D R- 0 8 or the sound sour ce itself has low volume, set the switch to HIGH . When the REC L E VE L switch is set to LOW or HIGH , the unit automatically adjusts the recording level for optimal recording, so you cannot use the  / ¯ keys to manually adjust the recording level.

Recording formats and times Recording times (hours: minutes) for different le formats and microSD/microSDHC card capacities are shown in the following table.
T ASCA M DR - 08 63 On the FILE/FOLDER screen, you can view the contents of the SOUND folder (which is used to store audio les) on the microSD card. In addition, you can erase audio les selected on this screen, create folders and add tracks to the Playlist.
64 T AS CAM D R- 0 8 When a file is selected, press the • ¯ ( Next ) key to open the pop-up menu. When • New Folder is selected, press the ¯ ( Next ) key to open a pop-up message to confirm whether or not you want to create a new folder . Icons shown on the FILE/FOLDER screen The following types of icons are shown on the FILE/FOLDER screen.

Selecting a folder for recording and playback Select the desired folder on the FILE/FOLDER screen, and press the ¯ ( Next ) key to open the selected folder and show a list of the les in the folder .
T ASCA M DR - 08 67 Splitting files Y ou can split a le into two les at any point. 1 Use the  and ¯ keys or the FOLDER/ FILE screen to select the file that you want to split. 2 Play or sear ch the file until you find the point where you want to split it.
68 T ASCA M DR - 08 Press the  ( No ) key to cancel splitting th e file and return to the SPLIT FILE screen. NOTE Whe n the SPL I T FI LE scr ee n is op en, you c an pre ss the Á PL A Y key and find the p oint whe re you w ant to split th e file dur ing playb ack.
T ASCA M DR - 08 69 4 Press the ¯ ( Enter ) key to open the DE - LETE FILE screen. 5 Press the ¯ ( Yes ) key to erase the file and return to the Home Scr een. Press the  ( No ) key to cancel erasing the file and return to the FUNCTION menu screen.
70 T A SCA M DR - 08 Playing a file On the Home Screen, press the Á P L AY key when stopped to start playback. NOTE Files mus t be i n the playb ack ar ea to b e playe d. • (See “ Set th e playb ack and re pe at are a” on page 72.) Y ou c an also sel ec t a fil e on the F IL E/ FO LD ER • scre en to pl ay it.
T ASCA M DR - 08 71 5 Press the ¯ ( Enter ) key to open the JUMP BACK setting screen. 6 Use the + / – keys to set the jump back interval to one of the following values: OFF , 1-10 seconds (in 1-second increments), 20 seconds or 30 seconds. (The default value is 3 seconds.
72 T AS CAM D R- 0 8 Set the playback and repeat areas Use the MODE setting in the PLAY menu to set the playback area. When the last le in the playback area is played, the unit automatically continues playing from the beginning of the rst le in the playback area.

The files are number ed in the list in the order that they are added. 9 When you are finished adding tracks to the Playlist, press the HOME key to return to the Home Screen. Editing the Playlist The PLAYLIST screen shows the tracks in the Playlist.

78 T AS CAM D R- 08 DELETE ALL Use th is t o re move all f i les f rom the Playlis t. Files th at a re r emoved f rom t he Playlis t ar e not er as ed f r om t he m icroSD ca rd . After pressing the • ¯ key , open a pop-up message to confirm the deletion of all the files from the Play List.
T ASCA M DR - 08 79 Repeating playback of an interval Y ou can play a desired interval within a le repeatedly (A-B repeat playback). 1 Press the FUN CTION key to open the FUNC - TION menu screen. 2 Use the + / – keys to select the REPEAT item. 3 Press the ¯ ( Enter ) key to open the RE - PEAT setting screen.
80 T ASCA M DR - 0 8 / icons appear beneath the playback position bar on the Home Screen at the A and B point positions. 6 Press the + key to start repeat playback. A-B repeat icon appears at the bottom left of the screen. T o disable the A-B repeat function, press + key again.

T ASCA M DR - 08 83 When the playback speed is set to any value other than 100%, the playback speed function can be turned ON or OFF . When set to 100%, the / icons are not shown. NOTE The pl aybac k spe ed f unc tio n cannot be us ed w ith a file that has b ee n re corde d at a samp ling fr equ enc y of 96 kHz.

T o restore playback to its original speed, set the value to 100% in step 4 above or turn the function OFF in step 5.
T ASCA M DR - 08 85 Connecting to a computer by USB By connecting this unit with a computer using the included Micro USB cable, you can copy audio les between the unit’ s microSD card and the computer . This unit is compatible with the following audio le formats.
