6 After opening the box , check the packing list that comes w ith your multiport to ensur e that you have receiv ed all components. At a minimum y ou should have receiv ed the unit, this manual and any applicable addendums, and a software utility diskette.
All standard model s requir e 115VAC, 50/60 Hz. power and come with a three-prong power cord. Do not attempt to operate the uni t with a two- prong socket or adapter. 230 VAC, 50/60 Hz . is optional. All H- models power -up when you depr ess the power swi tch on the back of the unit to "ON".
8 NOTE: Before you proceed w ith installation, make certain that the devic e connected to the host port is setup to hav e the same configuration as the mul tiport host port.
IMPORTA NT: Before you proceed w ith cabling , you must know whether the devic es you are connecti ng to your multipor t are DTE (Data Termi nal Equipment) or D CE (D ata Communication Equipment). The following devices are g enerally DTE: terminals, printers, and computer s like the IBM PC.
10 If you are interfacing a DCE device to a DTE dev ice, you must use a one-to-one strai ght cable as show n in Figure 2 . If you are interfacing a DCE dev ice to a DCE device, or a DTE device to a DTE devic e, you must use a crossed cable as show n in Figure 3 .
This section discusses user -programmable operati ons (see Section 5.1 ), operating in the diff erent modes (see Section 5.2 ), binar y mode (see Section 5.3 ), break conditi on (see Section 5.4 ), and data flow control (see Section 5.
12 This is a si ngle character that indicates a completed message to the multiport i n Modes of Operation 2, 3, 4 and 5.
NOTE: For illustration purposes, the f actory defau lt control character ( Control- T ) will be used in the following descriptions of the Modes of Operation. Section 5.
14 Mode of Operation 3 prov ides multiplexi ng to the host port of a singl e message from all per ipheral por ts. Single messag es f rom each peripheral port are sent to the host dev ice only w hen a request for messages command is r eceived.
Mode of Operation 6 prov ides time-divi sion multipl exing. In this mode, the multiport conti nuously scans al l peripheral ports to check for characters in the r eceive buffers.
16 To clear the recei ve buffer for a selected peripheral port, send the control character followed by ASCII capital R . All complete or partial messages in the buff e r of the selected peripheral port will be erased regardl e ss of the mode of operation.
For exampl e, suppose the host device is transmi tting and recei ving data from Port 1 and you w ish to switch to Por t 2. 1. Send Control- T to the multiport. 2. W ait two char acter times. 3. Read computer input buffer. 4. If there are no character s in the PC's input buff er, send ASCII 2 .
18 NOTE: The host device may select and transmit data to any peripheral port w hile simultaneousl y receivi n g all messages from all peripheral ports.
In Mode of Operation 5, a sing le message is sent to the host port from a selected peripher al port.
20 Binary mode allows all data r eceived by the host port to be passed through to the selected per ipheral port including the control character.
NOTE: W hen XON/XOFF is enabled, the multiport will continue to support hardw are handshaking lines.
22 Peripheral-to-multiport-to-hos t communication: W hen a peripheral dev ice transmits data to the host dev ice throug h a peripheral port, the data is r eceived and stor ed in a 3740-character receiv e buf fer (or 7740 receiv e buf f er for 525 units w ith Option 20) whic h in turn retr ansmits it to the host dev ice through the host port.
Host-to-multiport-to-periphera l c ommunication W hen the host device transmits data to a per ipheral device thr ough the multiport's host p.
24 Peripheral-to-multiport-to-hos t communication W hen a peripheral dev ice transmits data to host dev ice through the multiport's per ipheral port, the data is receiv ed and stored in a 256-character r eceive buffe r which in turn r etransmits it to the computer throug h the host port.
To access the configuration mode of the multipor t, connect a dumb terminal ( or a PC running a ter m inal emul ation program) to the host port: Port 5 of the 525H, Port 9 of the 528H and 529H, or Port 18 of the 5218H.
26 NOTE: Menu selection is case sensi tive. It is recommended that y our keyboard be i n the CAPS LOCK position. In the configuration mode, some characters ar e display ed wi th a HEX notation si nce all combinations from 00 Hex TO 7F Hex may be selected.
