S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver 3 Setting up the SporT rak S etting up the S porT rak Color is a simple three-step process: installing the batteries, selecting the language to be used and initializing the S porT rak. Ins talling the Batteries To change the batteries, remo ve the battery door on the back of the SporT rak Color .
4S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver Selecting Language The first time you use your S porT rak (or if memor y has been completely erased) you will be asked to select the language that you want to use. U se the UP/DO WN arrows on the keypad to highlight the language y ou desire.
S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver 5 Pr ess [ENTER]. (Y ou have 10 seconds to press [ENTER] or the S porT rak will shut off.) The SporT rak displays a message bo x indicating that the receiver needs to be initialized.
6S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver When the time is correct, press [ENTER]. The last piece of information needed is the date. U sing the arrow keys, enter the pr esent date. Pr ess [ENTER]. Pr essing right arrow r esults in: Pr essing up arrow r esults in: Ed iting moves the cursor block left or right.
S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver 7 Basic Operation Fo r many of you this will be your first introduction into using a GPS receiver as a navigational tool. W ith all of the features and functions pro vided with the S porT rak, it may seem a bit intimidating at first.
8S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver T urning Power on/Of f Tu r n ing the SporT rak On The last navigation screen you w ere viewing will be displayed. If the last navigation screen view was the Map scr een, the last zoom scale setting will be used.
S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver 9 A djusting the Contrast Navigational Screens The SporT rak Color has nine navigation screens: M ap screen, Compass screen, Large Data screen, two P osition scr eens, Road screen, Data Scr een, Speed Screen and Sat S tatus screen.
10 S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver M ap Screen — The Map screen has two modes, position or cursor . In the position mode, your present position is indicated by the large arrow icon in the center of the display . If you are moving, the arrow will point in the dir ection that you ar e heading.
S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver 11 R oad Screen — The R oad screen presents your route as if y ou were travelling on a road. When you need to make a turn, the road will graphically display the turn and the direction. W aypoint and destination icons will be displayed relativ e to your position as they come into view .
12 S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver Saving a Wa ypoint A waypoint is a point on a map that you can name and save in the S porT rak. They are primarily used for creating r outes. Whether the r oute is a simple GO TO or a more complex multileg route, it needs stor ed waypoints to use as its star ting and destination point.
S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver 13 Y ou can now use the arrow keypad to select the character y ou wish to enter . W ith the character highlighted, press [ENTER] and the charac- ter is appended to the name you are entering and display ed in the field above the keys.
14 S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver Using Goto R outes A GO T O route is simply a r oute with a start point and a single destination point: I am here and I want to go to ther e. All that is required to cr eate a GOT O route is having the destination waypoint saved in memory .
S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver 15 letter “L” and that the cursor has mov ed to the next letter in the city name. (Y ou can move the cursor back if y ou made a mistake by highlighting the “<-” button on the keyboard and pr ess [ENTER].
16 S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver GO T O routes are NOT sav ed in memor y when the SporT rak is turned off. I f you are navigating on a GO TO r oute and you need to turn the S porT rak off, you will need to r estart the GO T O. Routes, however , are stored in memory .
S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver 17 Re ference Power / Backlight / Contrast Tu r n t h e SporT rak On — A pplies po wer to the SporT rak and displays last NA V screen viewed. During power-up the first scr een shows the software and map database versions curr ently loaded in the S porT rak.

From any screen Use up/down arrows to highlight Contrast (The menu display may differ slightly depending upon which screen it was accessed from.

S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver 21 R efer ence Se tting the Map Detail — The detail of the map can be set to highest, high, medium, low or low est. This changes the zoom level that different map objects (cities, highways, labels, etc.) are displayed.
22 S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver R efer ence Tu r n i ng On/Off Display ed POI’ s — [A vailable only if a map has been uploaded from a M agellan MapSend S treets and Destinations or M apS end T opo for the United S tates CD-ROM] Allows you to select which, if any , POIs that have been uploaded from a M apSend product to be displayed.
S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver 23 R efer ence Tu rn ing Data Fields O n/Off — This option allows y ou to turn on or off the two information fields that are displayed on the M ap screen. Tu rning these off allows for mor e of the map to be displayed.
24 S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver R efer ence St re et Information Description — This mode just displays the name of the street close to your pr esent position.
S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver 25 R efer ence to the map scale indicator . (This function requires that map data has been uploaded from Magellan M apSend T opo for the U nited S tates and that your present position as well as the pr ojected horizon falls within the area uploaded.
26 S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver R efer ence Se lecting Pr imary Usage — The S porT rak can be set to either Land or Ma rine Usage. When in Land (default), the map displays land areas in white and water areas as dark gray .
S porT rak Color GPS Mapping R eceiver 27 R efer ence U sing V ertical Pr ofile — Ve r tical Profile displays the elevation as a graphical display for the option you select. Only T rack History is available for this function if MapSend T opo for the U nited S tates map data is not uploaded.
