Utilities 4-1 Section 4 Utilities This section describes procedures for using utilities and updating firmware depending on the operating system used. See Appendix B f or detailed configuration procedures f or WinDGS using Windows 95 or Windows 98.
Utilities 4-2 The link test tool helps determine the RF networ k co ver age. The results of the link test will help eliminate low RF signal le vel areas that can result in loss of connection betw een the PC Card and the Aironet Access P oint.
Utilities 4-3 8. Star t a telnet session on the mobile station to the Aironet Access P oint. Depending on the system in use, the telnet application ma y hav e logging and note taking capability . If so , enable these modes. 9. Navigate through the Aironet Access P oint menu to the link test option.

The combined result is represented by a diagonal line . The Aironet Access P oint associat- ing with the PC Card is indicated along the bottom of the displa y as well as its MA C address.
Utilities 4-8 Loading Ne w Firmware V ersions The firmware is contained in the card’ s flash memory . Flash memor y allo ws for easy updating of the firmware as neces- sar y . Upgrading Firmware f or Windows 95 or Windows 98 The WinDGS program is used to load new firmware.
Utilities 4-9 Loading Firmware f or Windows 3.11 and DOS The FLSH3545.COM program is used to load ne w firmware to systems operating under DOS and Windows 3.11. T o load new firmware: 1. Bef ore upgrading the firmware, uninstall the driv er or reboot the computer and do not load the driver during the boot process.

Edit Parameters B-7 Network type (Ad Hoc Mode) This mode is used to set up a small, temporary network between two or more computers . For e xample, y ou might set up an ad hoc network between computers in a conf erence room so users can share information in a meeting.
Edit Parameters B-8 Maximum P ower Sa ve Mode Maximum P o wer Sa ve Mode (Max PSP Mode) can only be used in conjunction with PS or F ast PSP Modes.This mode allows the Aironet 4000 Series Wireless LAN Adapter to conser v e the most power while still main- taining an infrastructure connection.
Edit Parameters B-9 Netw ork P arameters User modifiable par ameters are limited to the choice of MA C Address: • Factory MA C Address : This is the def ault MAC address which is guaranteed to be unique. Unless y ou hav e a very good reason to define your own MA C address, it is STR ONGL Y RECOMMENDED that you use the f actor y MA C address.

Edit Parameters B-11 Adv anced (Infrastructure) The f ollowing parameters are contained in both the Infr a- structure and Ad Hoc Modes: • Antenna Mode • Specified Access P oint • R TS Threshold.
Edit Parameters B-12 • Left Antenna Only (J2) : Choose this option if the antenna you are using is connected to the left hand antenna por t and you are not using the standard Snap-On antenna. This tells the PC Card not to attempt to communicate using the right hand antenna por t since no antenna is connected to it.
Edit Parameters B-13 RTS Retry Limit This parameter controls the number of times the PC Card will re-send the R TS pack et if it does not receiv e a CTS from the pre viously sent RTS pac ket.
Edit Parameters B-14 Beacon P eriod This parameter specifies the duration betw een beacon pack ets that are used by IEEE 802.11 systems to synchronize the “hops” (change to another frequency). The beacon pack et contains timing inf or mation and hop pattern information that is broadcast over the airw av es.
