6 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER T o assemble the scanner: 1. Remo ve any shipping tape fr om the top and bottom of the scanner . 2. Plug the T ransparency Adapter Cable into the Option port on the body of the scanner .
S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER 7 4. T urn the scanner o ver and slide the lock tab to the unlocked position. The scanner must be unlocked for you to continue with the installation. It must also be unlocked to scan. 5. P roceed to “Step 2: I nstall t he Software.
8 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE The Installation CD contains all the driver software and scanning software to run your scanner . T o install the softwar e: 1. S tart Microsoft Windo ws and make sure that no other applications are running.
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 9 3. On the M ain Menu, select Install P roducts . 4. Make sure the boxes for Nu a n c e Pa p e r Por t ® and Scanner Driv er , are checked. If you also want to install the ArcS oft® Scrapbook Suite® software now , select it too.

S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 11 The W elcome to the OneT ouch 4.0 Setup W izar d opens. 1. Click Nex t . 2. On the Vi sioneer License Agreement window , read the license agreement.
12 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE A window opens with image quality samples asking you to select an image for your Color Space setting. The Color S pace setting sets the gamma value for the scanner so scanned items look good on your monitor .
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 13 5. ST OP when you see the “Complete the installation by connecting your hardware ” window . Do NO T click on OK yet. Leav e the window open and proceed to “S tep 3: Conne ct and P ower On t he Scanner” on page 14 .

S TEP 3: C ONNECT AND P OWER O N THE S CANNER 15 4. Plug the pow er adapter into the scanner power port, then into a wall outlet. The status light on the fr ont of the scanner is illuminated, indicating the scanner is r eceiving pow er .
16 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE If you are using W indows XP and hav e plugged the USB cable into a USB 1.1 port, an information bu bble may open explaining that “ A HI-SPEED USB device is plugged into a non-HI-SPEED USB hub ”.
S TEP 3: C ONNECT AND P OWER O N THE S CANNER 17 5. When the software is finished loading, r eturn to the Connect Scanner window and c lick OK to finish the installation process. No t e : If you want to see more information about your scanner and a quick explanation of how to use t he OneT ouch features, click the Mo re button on the window .

S TEP 3: C ONNECT AND P OWER O N THE S CANNER 19 V IEW AND S AVE THE U SER G UIDES The U ser Guides for your scanner , and for the software you received with it are on the I nstallation CD. 1. On the Ma in Menu, click U ser Guides . The Visioneer U ser Guides window opens.

The CD also includes a free copy of Acr obat ® Rea de r ® in case your computer does not have it alr eady installed. The Scanner R eadme file is in HTML format and w i ll open in any standard browser .

The scanner scans the item, then sends the image to the Destination A pplication indicated by the button ’ s icon.

The icons indicate the Destin ation A pplications so you can see, at a glance, where the image will be sent when scanning is finished.
S CANNING F ROM THE TWAIN I NTERFACE 31 S CANNING F ROM THE TW AIN I NTERFACE Y our 9420 OneT ouch scanner is specia lly designed to scan photographs and 35mm slides and negatives. This means you can make exact copies of your photos and documents, as well as scan 35mm slides and both positive and negative filmstrips.
32 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE A CCESSING THE TW AIN I NTERFACE As previously stated, you can access the TW AIN inter face from any TW AIN complia nt scanning application. Y ou can configure any of your OneT ouch buttons to automatically open the TW AIN interface when you press a butt on on the scanner .
S CANNING F ROM THE TWAIN I NTERFACE 33 6. Click OK to save y our changes and close the OneT ouch P roperties window . 7. P ress the Scan button on the scanner or click on the Scan button on the OneT ouch P anel. 8. The TW AIN interface will now open.
34 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Opening the TW AIN Interface from P aperP ort: 1. On the W indows taskbar , click St a r t , point to Pr o g r a m s , point to ScanSoft Pa p e r Po r t , then click Pa p e r Po r t . The P aperP or t Desktop opens.
S CANNING F ROM THE TWAIN I NTERFACE 35 The F olders pane (which shows fold ers for organiz ing your scanned images) is replaced by the Scan pane. 3. Click the Scanner drop-down arrow , and select TW AIN: Visioneer 9420 from the drop-do wn list. N ote: Please wait a few moments fo r your selection fr om the drop- down list to become active.
36 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 4. In the “Scan what?” section, choose to scan a Document or Photograph . If you want t o change the format of the scanned item ’ s file name or file type before you start scanning, click Settings.
S CANNING F ROM THE TWAIN I NTERFACE 37 S ETTING U P Y OUR S CANNER TO W ORK W ITH P APER P ORT When you select a scanning option on the P aperP ort window from the Scanner drop-do wn list, either TW AIN: Visioneer 9420 or WIA: Visioneer 9420 (Windows XP only), the Scan button at the bottom of the panel should become active.
38 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T o setup your scanner: 1. F rom the Scanner drop-down list, select one of the options, such as T wain: Visioneer 9420 . 2. Click the Set u p button. A window opens to begin the s etup process.
S CANNING F ROM THE TWAIN I NTERFACE 39 4. Click Y e s (r ecommended) then click Ne x t . The next window is for checking the connection between your scanner and the computer . 5. Click Nex t . After the Setup W izard checks the connections, the next window is displayed.
40 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 6. Click Nex t . The next window tells you to insert a page or photo into the scanner . 7. Place an item face do wn on the glass. Align the edge of the item with the arrow at the upper-left co rner of the glass and close the lid.
S CANNING F ROM THE TWAIN I NTERFACE 41 8. Click Nex t . The TW AIN Interface opens. 9. Click the Scan button on the TW AIN interface. The Setup W izard runs the scan test. A message window ope ns that says “Basic scan test passed.” No t e : If you ar e setting up the scanner for WIA, the WIA interface opens instead.

T HE T WO TWAIN I NTERFACE O PTIONS 43 T HE T WO TW AIN I NTERFACE O PTIONS When scanning from P aperP ort or other TW AIN app lications, you have two TW AIN interface options: ■ Basi c Int er fa ce —Use the B asic Interface if you don ’ t need to make many adjustments before scanning.
44 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CANNING FROM THE B ASIC I NTERFACE The Basic I nterface can scan a pr eview of the image so you can adjust its appearance befor e scanning the final image. After adjusting the appearance, y ou click the Scan button on the B asic Interface (not on the scanner) to scan the item.
S CANNING FROM THE B ASIC I NTERFACE 45 5. T o choose another resolution, use the Resol uti on (DP I) menu. Y ou can al so change the picture type again, for example, from color to grayscale, and you can chan ge the paper size from the Pa p e r S i z e menu.

When scanning is complete, thumbnail images appear on the P aperP or t Desktop. Sing le page items appear as indivi dual thumbnails on the P aperP or t desktop.
S CANNING FROM THE B ASIC I NTERFACE 47 S CANNING P ART OF AN I MAGE T o scan part of an image, you dr aw a box a round the part you want. The scanner then only scans that porti on of the image and places it in the scanning application (in this case the P aperP ort Desktop).

I t is also for scan ning 35 mm slides and negativ es. 1. S tart P aperP ort or other TW AIN application and open the TW AIN interface.
S CANNING FROM THE A DVANCED I NTERFACE 49 3. F rom the menu at the top left panel, select t he type of scanning: ■ Scan Reflectiv e Using to scan paper items. ■ Scan Slide U sing to scan 35mm slides. ■ Scan N egativ e U sing to scan 35mm nega tive film strips.
50 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 9. When you ’ re satisfied with the image, click the Scan button. 10. When you ’ re finished scanning items, click Done to close the Advanced I nterface. 11. If you ’ re using P a perP ort, the P aperP o rt Scan message box opens.
S CANNING FROM THE A DVANCED I NTERFACE 51 A DJUSTING THE I MAGE ON THE A DVANCED I NTERFACE Y ou can adjust the scan settings on the Advanced I nterface to produce the best possible image for the items y ou ’ re scanning.

S CANNING FROM THE A DVANCED I NTERFACE 53 A DJUSTING THE R ESOLUTION Resolution determines the amount of detail you can see in the scanned image. The resolut ion setting for a sc an is in dots-per-inch (dpi). The higher the resolution, the finer the de tails, ho wever , higher dpi settings also take longer to scan and produce larger files sizes.
54 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 9420 USB S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T o adjust the resolution: 1. T o use one of the preset resolutions for typical scanned items, click one of the options in the list. F or example, to set the resoluti on for scanning a business car d, select Business Car d.
S CANNING FROM THE A DVANCED I NTERFACE 55 A DJUSTING THE B RIGHTNESS AND C ONTRAST Sometimes an item is scanned with th e brightness and contrast set to be too light or too dark. F or example, a note written with a light pencil may need to be scanned darker to impro ve legibility .

S CANNING FROM THE A DVANCED I NTERFACE 57 A DJUSTING I NPUT S IZ E Y ou can scan documents up to 8.5" by 11.69", but you can sele ct other scan sizes, or adjust the input size to scan only specific sections of an image.

Y ou can scan both positive and negative film images. A B RIEF E XPLANATION Y our scanner has sensors that capture the image of the item being scanned.

N ote that as you select differ ent configurations, the images change based on the selection. F or example, if you select G rey Scale, the images will be in shades of grey .

T o scan in color , select one of the configurations indicated by the small color icon, such as the Scan Color Document configuration. The scan configuration list is preset for the application you select in the Select Destination list.

S ELECTING N EW S ETTINGS FOR A B UTTON 77 P APER P ORT P ROPERTIE S These properties apply to P aperP ort, and are for designating the folder to receiv e your scanned items. 1. Select the P aperP or t folder where y ou want the file of the scanned image to be located.

S ELECTING N EW S ETTINGS FOR A B UTTON 79 3. Click Browse to find the application y ou want to add to the list. When you select the application using the B ro wse button, steps 1 and 2 on the dialog box are automatically filled in, and the application icon appears in step 3.
