1 I NSTALLATION This chapter con tains an overview of IP T elephony Manager and install ation proced ures for UNIX. This chapter con tains the following topics : ■ Overview ■ Management W orkstati.
18 C HAPTER 1: I NSTALLATION The management st ation uses Management Infor mation Bases (MIBs) , defined for each car d in the hub, to issue commands to the NMC. The NMC executes the command s and obtains the resul ts using a pr oprietary CommWorks prot ocol.
Before Yo u Begin 19 T able 6 lists the softwar e requir ements needed to achie ve the best performance fr om IP T elephony Manager . If you a re installi ng HP OpenVi ew for the f irst time, temporarily disable autodiscove r y . Do not all ow OpenView to discover the devices on your network automat ically .
20 C HAPTER 1: I NSTALLATION If you are using HP OpenView , you must ins tall it befor e you install IP T elephony Manager . If not, HP OpenV i ew does not integr ate correctly . Make sure IP T elephony Manager and HP OpenView are i nstalled on the same system.
Install ing IP Teleph ony Manager 21 8 From the command li ne prompt, type the fol lowing commands and press Return after each: TCMHOME=<installation directory> (for example, /opt/tcm) export TCMHOME mkdir -p $TCMHOME cd cdrom/cdrom0/tcm_sol (for HP, tcm_ux) .
22 C HAPTER 1: I NSTALLATION Starting IP T elephony Manager After yo u complete the installati on and modify the path statement, you can start IP T elep hony Manager .
Connecting to Entit ies 23 T o view the e ntity aft er the it i s connected us ing IP T elephony Manag er: 1 Start I P T elephony Manager . 2 Clic k File and th en clic k Open from the IP T elephony Manger Consol e window . 3 Select the enti ty from the lis t.
24 C HAPTER 1: I NSTALLATION Integrating with HP OpenView The IP T elephony M anager in stallation script instal ls OpenView integr ation files to the appr opriate OpenView Network Node Manager subdir ectories .
Inte gra ting wi th HP Ope nVi ew 25 If CommW orks devices were popul ated in OpenView b efore IP T elephony Manager was instal led, the network map will not displ ay the CommWorks bitmaps corr ectly aft er IP T elephony Manager in tegration.
26 C HAPTER 1: I NSTALLATION Linking CommWorks Objects If you choos e to insta l l HP OpenView , you must install it befo re IP T elephony Manager . This lets you start IP T elephony Manager dir ectly from HP OpenView . T o link CommWorks objects in HP OpenView to IP T elephony Manager , use the following procedur e.
2 C ONFIGURATION This chapter des cribes how to configur e CommWorks IP T eleph ony M anager . This chapter con tains the following topics : ■ Management Stat ion Configuration ■ Component Configu.

Execut ion Err ors 99 < filena me > does not exi st Fata l Error (tc msdl ). Nonf ata l error (xtc msd l). This e rror occu rs if you sele cted a filename t hat does not exist. For tcmsdl, an err or message is display ed on the scr een or output to the log file, and then the utility ter minates.
100 A PPENDIX : E RRO R M ESSAGES SNMP Set Fa iled Fata l error . This er ror occ urs if th e targ et card is co mm unica ting with th e Softwar e Download util ity , but does not respon d corre ctly to a SNMP Set command. The e xact SNMP err or is di splayed.
B C OMMAND L INE I NTERFAC E The command line interfac e consists of a number of non-inte ractive commands or utilities. T hese utiliti es are run at the c ommand line fr om a shell prompt or a shel l script.
102 A PPENDIX : C OMMAND L INE I NTERFACE An "x" place d at the beginning of any IP T elephony Manage r command omits command parameters and the target sl ot and channel designation-onl y the target IP addr ess or hostname is r equired.
Gener al Syntax 103 For instance , to display Help for t he Softwa re Download util ity , type the following command: tcmsdl -h [-c readcomm][-C writecomm] readc omm — read only communit y string writ ecomm — r ead/write communi ty string Used to specify th e SNMP community strings that have been ass igned to the device.
104 A PPENDIX : C OMMAND L INE I NTERFACE S Sets target slots i n the specif ied range C Sets target channels i n the specif ied range. If omitt ed, execution at the car d level i s assu med. T Sets target timesl ots in the specified range . If omitted, exec ution at the channel ( span line) le vel is assumed.
Conf igura tio n 105 Configuration The configurat ion command line interf ace (CLI) uses the foll owing syntax: tcmget command: tcmget [-h] [-l logfile ] [-c re adcomm] [-C writecomm] [-z] [-L] [-a] [-f file ] [-F] [ -G group [ parameter ].
106 A PPENDIX : C OMMAND L INE I NTERFACE -f ( filename ) ■ tcmget: Place the r esult output of the get operati on in a file given by < filena me > (stdout can be desi gnated using a filename o f ’ - ’ ). ■ tcmset: Read the output of the get operation fr om the file given by < filena me > and use it to set the va lues.
Conf igura tio n 107 ( parameter ) Parameter whose value is to be prin ted (for tcmget) or se t (for tcmset). (For example, ’ Ser ial Number ’ .) Each parameter shoul d be separated by a space and r equires pr oper shell quoting. At least one par ameter should be supplie d per gr oup, unless -L (list parameter s by group) is specifi ed.
108 A PPENDIX : C OMMAND L INE I NTERFACE Specifi es slots or channels to be issued commands. T arget has the following format: < IP-host >:S< s-range >[,C< c-range >][,S< s-r ange > [,C< c-range >]...] where I P-host can be IP-dot notati on, or a host name that is defined in the host da tabase or /etc /hosts fi le.
Actions/C ommands 109 Actions/Commands The command utility uses the fol lowing syntax: tcmcmd [-q] -E command -G group [-P parameter ][-F][-p seconds ] target Query Curr ent Command Status (-q) Wher e.
110 A PPENDIX : C OMMAND L INE I NTERFACE [-p seconds] Sets amount of time, in seconds, between pol ls. Target Follows ge neral syntax . Note that if you omit a ch annel range, the command is assu med to b e t arge ted at t he sl ot level.
SNMP Com mands 111 SNMP Commands This descri bes how to set SNMP community stri ngs and how to monitor the SNM P pa rame ters. For securit y reasons, you can not view the community strin gs through IP T elephony Manager . Setting SNMP Community Strings This sect ion describes how to set the SNMP community str i ngs.

SNMP Com mands 113 -G (BI) Selects a gr oup, followed by a list of paramet ers within that gr oup which are to be retr ieved. (For exampl e, ’ NM C Identif i cation ’ .) Group speci fications must appear after al l other command arguments, and befor e the target .
114 A PPENDIX : C OMMAND L INE I NTERFACE T one T est This secti on describes how to send and rec eive a tone test. Send T one T est (-S) The followin g command causes the modem to send a tone of th e specif ied fr equency , duration, and amplit ude.
Modem Tests 115 Receive T one T est (-R) Use the followin g command to r eceive a tone test: tcmtone -R [-t] [-s num ] [-p nu m ] target Modem T ests tcmtest -T test [-s num ] target Query Curren t T .
