17 English Hot keys The computer employs hot keys or ke y combinations to access m ost of the computer’s controls like sc reen brightness, volume ou tput and the BIOS Utility. To activate hot keys, pres s and hold the < Fn > key before pressing the other k ey in t he hot ke y combin ation.
1 Getting to know your TravelMate 18 English The Euro symb ol If your ke yboard layo ut is set to Unite d States-I nternation al, Unit ed Kingdom or if you have a keyb oard with a European layout, you can type the Euro symbol on your keyboard. Note for US keyboard users: The keybo ard layout is set when you first set up Windows.
19 English To verify the keyboard type in Wi ndows XP, follow the steps below: 1 Click on Start , C ontrol Panel . 2 Double-click on Regional and Language O ptions . 3 Click on the Language tab and click on Details . 4 Verify that the keyboard layout used for "En English (United States)" is set to United States-Inter national.
1 Getting to know your TravelMate 20 English Launch keys Located above the ke yboard are thr ee buttons. The lef t-most button is the power button. To the right of the power button are the two launc h keys. They are desi gnated as the Empo wering K ey and a programm able button .
21 English Touchpad The built -in touchp ad is a po inting de vice that sen ses movement on its surface. This means the cursor respon ds as you move your finger on the surface of the touchpad. The central location on the palmrest provides optimum comfort a nd support.
1 Getting to know your TravelMate 22 English Note: Keep your fingers dry and clean when using the touchp ad. Also keep the touchpad dry and clean . The touchpad is sensitive to finger movement, hence, the lighter the touch, the better the response. Tapping harder will no t increase the touchpad’s responsiveness.
23 English Storage This comp uter su ppli es you with the following media storage: • High-capacity Enhanc ed IDE ha rd disc • Internal optical dr ive Hard disc The high-capacity hard di scdisc is the answer to your storage needs. This is where your programs and data are stored.
1 Getting to know your TravelMate 24 English Using software Playing DVD movies When the DVD-ROM drive module is in stalled in the optical drive bay, you can play DVD movies on your computer. 1 Eject the DVD tray and insert a DV D movie disc; then close the DVD tray.
25 English Audio The computer comes with 16-bit high -fidelity AC'9 7 ste reo audi o, and dual stereo speak ers. Adjusting the volume Adjusting the volume on the comput er is as easy as pressing some buttons. See "Hot keys" on page 17 for more information on adjusting the speaker volume.

Disconnecting from the desktop Follow th ese steps to discon nect your computer from external accessor ies: 1 Save your work in progress.
27 English you can put the computer in Sleep mode by pressing < Fn >+< Esc >. Then close and latch the display. When you are ready to use the comp uter again, unla tch and open the display; then press and release the power button. Note: If the Sleep indicator is o f f, the computer has entered Hibernation mode and turned off.

Failure to remove the media ca n damage the drive head. • Pack the computer in a protecti ve case that can prevent the computer from sl iding around and cushion it if it should fall .
29 English Setting up a home office If you frequen tly work on your comp uter at home, you may want to purchase a sec ond AC adaptor for use at home. With a second AC adaptor, you can avoid carrying th e extra weight to and from home.

Connectivity options Ports allow you to co nnect peripheral devices to your computer as you would with a d esktop PC. To use the network feature, conn ect an Ether net cable f rom the network jack on the rear of the co mputer to a network jack or hub on your network .
37 English Universal Serial Bus The USB 2.0 port is a high-speed seri a l bus which allows yo u to connect USB perip herals wit hout ta king up pre cious syst em resou rces. Your computer has three ports available, one on the left and two at the rear.

Then turn the computer over to access its base. 2 (a) Remove the scre ws from the memory cove r; then (b) lif t up and remove the memory cover.

At the press of Acer Empowering Key, the Acer eManager user interface appears, feat uring four main settings — Acer eS ettin g, Acer eP resenta tion, Acer ePowerMa nagement and A cer eRecovery(manufacturing option ).

3 Troubleshooting m y computer 48 English Image is not full-screen. The computer display has a native res olution of 1024 x 768 (XGA) for the 14.1"/15.0" screens. If you set th e resolution lowe r than this, the screen expands to fill the comput er display.
49 English The keyboard does not respond. Try attaching an external keyboard to a USB 2.0 port on the rear or left of the computer. If it works, cont act your dealer or an author ised service center as the internal keyboard cable may be loose. The infrared port does not work.
