97-0019-01-01 1 Introduction Congratulations on your purchase of the Freedom SW Inverter/Charger (Freedom SW). The Freedom SW has been designed to give you premium power , ease of use, an d outstanding reliability . Please read this chapter to famili arize yourself with the main performance and protection features of the Freedom SW.
2 F reedom SW Owner’s Guide Introduction K ey F e atures The Freedom SW Inverter/Charger is a tr u e sine wave inverter/charger that can be used for mobile, marine and commercial applications.
97-0019-01-01 3 Introduction Manual Equalization Over a period of time, the cells in a flooded battery can develop uneven chemical st ates. This can result in a weak (underchar ged) cell which, in turn, ca n reduce the overall capacity of the battery .
4 F reedom SW Owner’s Guide Introduction Stack Charging Multiple Free dom SWs synchronize chargin g stages to ensure ef ficient charging of th e battery bank. When a single unit transitions from bulk to absorption so do all other units. In abso rpti on, all units m ust complete the absorption stage before transitioning to the next stage.
97-0019-01-01 5 Introduction Basic Protection F eatures The Freedom SW has the foll owing protectio n features: • over temperatu re shutdown for critical components such as th e transformer and the .
6 F reedom SW Owner’s Guide System Components The Freedom SW uses Xanbus, a ne twork communications protocol developed to communicate the Freedom SW’ s settings and activity to other Xanbus-enabled devices.
97-0019-01-01 7 System Components The Xanbus-enabled designation (see be low) means that this product works on a Xanbus network. Xa nbus-enabled products are: • Simple to opera te and routine tasks are automa ted. • Controlled by software that eli minates analog signalling err ors.

97-0019-01-01 51 Configuring the F reedom SW using the SCP NO TE : If a warning is received indicati ng that a setting is not accepted by the SCP , gradually increase the val ue of the setting until the SCP accepts it. This type of warning means that an internal minimum threshol d value is being crossed and therefore th e setting cannot be saved.
52 F reedom SW Owner’s Guide Configuring the F reedom SW using th e SCP A CIn Settings The ACIn Settings menu configures the voltage and frequency limits for AC Input quantification range. These are the limits at which the Freedom SW considers input voltage qualifi ed—that is, suitable for chargin g batteries or powering loads.
97-0019-01-01 53 Configuring the F reedom SW using the SCP Gen Support GEN Support allows power to be automatically drawn from the batteri es to assist an AC generator to support hea vy loads (i.e., loads that exceed th e available current from the generator).
54 F reedom SW Owner’s Guide Configuring the F reedom SW using th e SCP Stacking Configuration Menu The Stacking menu configures the Freedom SW to operate as a part of a multi-unit instal lation. When installing a stacked s ystem, every setting on the Stacking menu (except for Dev Name ) must be configured for each Freedom SW in the system.
97-0019-01-01 55 Configuring the F reedom SW using the SCP Setting the Device Name The Dev Name setting allows you to custom ize the name of the Freedom SW as it is displayed on other screens and menus. Changing the device name is not mandatory for stack ing to be successful.
56 F reedom SW Owner’s Guide Configuring the F reedom SW using th e SCP Setting the Device Number Setting the device number gives a Xanbu s-enabled device a un ique identity when several devices of the same typ e are installed in the power system network.
97-0019-01-01 57 Configuring the F reedom SW using the SCP Resetting the Freedom SW to Default Settings The Restore De faults command returns the Freedom SW to factory default settings. After using the Restore Defaults command, the Freedom SW is no longer config ured for the power system.
58 F reedom SW Owner’s Guide Battery Charging Refer ence This section describes the multistage charging algorithm (formula) of the Freedom SW. Battery T ypes Freedom SW char ges flooded (or wet) lead -acid, Gel, AGM (absorbed glass mat), and custom batteries.
97-0019-01-01 59 Battery Charging Reference The charging cycle is a multi-stage (three-stage) proc ess. Whenever qualified AC power is present at th e inverter ’ s input, it passes power through to the connected load and begins charging the batteries.
60 F reedom SW Owner’s Guide Battery Charging Reference Absorption Stage During the absorption stag e, the Freedom SW begins operating in constant voltage mode and the current falls gr adually as the amp hours are returned to the battery . By default, the bulk and absorption voltage settings are the same for all battery types.
97-0019-01-01 61 Battery Charging Reference T wo-Stage Charging Process T wo-stage (or no float) mode differs from an ordinary three-stage charge mode in that it does not continuously maintain the battery at float voltage. Instead, the Freedom SW begins char ging the battery in bulk mode whenever the battery voltage drops be low the recharge level.
62 F reedom SW Owner’s Guide Battery Charging Reference NO TE: When the char ge cycle is interrupted, the char ger will restart charging at the beginning of the multi-stage algorithm. Exit Current Threshold can be effe ctively disabled by programming the amp-hour capacity to the minimum.
97-0019-01-01 63 Battery Charging Reference Equalize Charging Many battery manufacture rs recommend periodic equali ze char ging to counter cell charge imbalance and capacity-robbing electrolyte stratification. Equalizing helps to improve battery performance and lifespan by encouraging more of the battery material to beco me active.
