13 PREP ARA TION ■ Connecting the AM loop antenna 1 Set up the AM loop antenna, then connect it to the terminals on this unit. 2 Press and hold the tab to insert the AM loop antenna lead wires into the AM ANT and GND terminals. 3 Orient the AM loop antenna for the best reception.
14 Connecting an external decoder This unit is equipped with 6 additional input jacks (FR ONT left and right, CENTER, SURR OUND left and right and SUBWOOFER) for discrete multi-channel input from a component equipped with a multi-channel decoder and 6 channel output jacks such as a D VD/Super Audio CD player .

Y ou can use it to enjoy CINEMA DSP , multi-channel audio sources. 1.8 m (6 ft) Front speaker s (FR and FL) The front speakers are used for the main source sound plus effect sounds.
16 CONNECTIONS ■ Speaker connections Be sure to connect the left channel (L), right channel (R), “ + ” (red) and “–” (black) properly . If the connections are faulty , no sound will be heard from the speakers, and if the polarity of the speaker connections is incorrect, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.

18 Connecting the power supply cord ■ Connecting the A C power cord Plug the power cord into an AC wall outlet. ■ V OL T A GE SELECT OR (Asia and General models only) The VOL T AGE SELECT OR on the rear panel of this unit must be set for your local main voltage BEFORE plugging into the AC main supply .

20 Tu rning on the power When all connections are complete, turn on the power of this unit. 1 Press ST ANDBY/ON (or SYSTEM PO WER on the remote control) to turn on the po wer of this unit. The le vel of the volume, and then the current sound f ield program name appear on the front panel display .
21 PREP ARA TION Using the basic menu Use the remote control to make adjustments. • Press SPEAKERS A/B/OFF on the front panel to select the front speakers you want to use. • Make sure you disconnect headphones from this unit. 1 Press AMP . 2 Press SET MENU .
22 SET MENU B ASIC SOUND INPUT OPTION 1 SETUP Press j / i to alter the settings for each parameter . Use d to move to the ne xt setting. 2 SP LEVEL Press j / i to adjust the balance between each speaker and the front left speaker . Use d to move to the ne xt setting.
23 PREP ARA TION Setting the unit to match your speaker system Follo w the instructions below to set the amplifier output to match the size of your room and speakers. Press u / d to cycle through parameters 1 through 4, and j / i to alter the parameter setting.
24 PLA YBACK 1 Press ST ANDBY/ON (or SYSTEM PO WER on the remote control) to turn on the po wer . 2 T urn on the video monitor connected to this unit. 3 Press SPEAKERS A/B/OFF on the front panel to select the front speaker s you want to use.
25 B ASIC OPERA TION ■ Playing video sour ces in the background Y ou can combine a video image from a video source with a sound from an audio source. For e xample, you can enjoy listening to classical music while ha ving beautiful scenery from the video source on the video monitor .
26 Input modes and indications This unit is equipped with 2 types of input jacks. Do the follo wing to select the type of input signals you want to use.
27 BASIC OPERA TION Selecting a sound field program Y ou can enhance your listening experience by selecting sound field programs. F or details about each program, see pages 30 – 33. 1 Press AMP . 2 Press one of the sound field program buttons on the remote contr ol to select the desired program.
28 ■ Playing Dolb y Digital EX or DTS ES material Press 6.1/5.1 to turn on the Dolby Digital + Matrix 6.1 or DTS + Matrix 6.1 decoder . The display changes A UTO → Matrix 6.1 → OFF each time 6.1/5.1 is pressed. AU TO : Automatically switches Dolby Digital + Matrix 6.
29 BASIC OPERA TION Notes • If you turn off the sound ef fects, no sound is output from the center speaker or surround speakers. • If you turn off the sound ef fects while the unit is repr oducing.
30 DIGIT AL SOUND FIELD PROCESSING (DSP) Understanding sound fields A sound field is def ined as the “ characteristic sound reflections of a particular space. ” In concert halls and other music venues, we hear early reflections and rev erberations as well as the direct sound produced by the artist(s).
BASIC OPERA TION 31 CINEMA DSP Sound design of CINEMA DSP Filmmakers intend for the dialog to be located right on the screen, the ef fect sound a little farther back, the music spread e ven farther back, and the surround sound around the listener . Of course, all of these sounds must be synchronized with the images on the screen.
32 ■ For movie pr ograms No. 7 8 9 Features This program creates the extremely wide sound f ield of a 70-mm movie theater . It precisely reproduces the source sound in detail, making both the video and the sound field incredibly real.
BASIC OPERA TION 33 Sound field effects The 6-channel soundtracks found on 70-mm film produce precise sound f ield localization and rich, deep sound without using matrix processing. This unit ’ s MO VIE THEA TER programs provide the same quality of sound and sound localization that 6-channel soundtracks do.
34 TUNING 4 Press PRESET/TUNING l / h once to begin automatic tuning. Press h to tune in to a higher frequency , or press l to tune in to a lower frequenc y . When the unit is tuned in to a station, the “TUNED” indicator lights up and the frequency of the station recei ved is shown on the front panel display .
BASIC OPERA TION 35 Presetting stations ■ A utomatically presetting FM stations Y ou can use the automatic preset tuning feature to store FM stations. This function enables the unit to automatically tune in to FM stations with strong signals, and to store up to 40 (8 stations in 5 groups, A1 through E8) of those stations in order .
36 4 Press PRESET/TUNING l / h to select a preset station number (1 to 8) while the “ MEMOR Y ” indicator is flashing. Press h to select a higher preset station number . Press l to select a lower pr eset station number . 5 Press MEMOR Y (MAN ’ L/A UT O FM) on the front panel while the “ MEMORY ” indicator is flashing.
B ASIC OPERA TION 37 ■ Exchanging preset stations Y ou can exchange the assignment of two preset stations with each other . The example belo w describes the procedure for exchanging preset station “E1” with “ A5”. 1 Select preset station “E1” using A/B/C/D/E and PRESET/TUNING l / h .
38 Use this feature to automatically set this unit in the standby mode after a certain amount of time. The sleep timer is useful when you are going to sleep while this unit is playing or recording a source. The sleep timer can only be set with the remote control.
BASIC OPERA TION 39 Recording adjustments and other operations are performed on other recording components. Refer to the operation instructions for these components for details on their operation . 1 T urn on the power of this unit and all connected components.
40 Adjusting the items on the set menu Use the remote control to make adjustments. y • Y ou can change set menu parameters while the unit is reproducing sound. • Y ou can use NEXT and SET MENU +/ – on the front panel to change these settings, if the unit is not set to TUNER mode.
41 AD V ANCED OPERA TION 6 Press j / i once to enter the setup mode of the selected item. The last setting you adjusted appears on the front panel display . Depending on the menu item, press u / d to select a sub item. 7 Press j / i repeatedly to c hange the menu item setting.
42 ■ 1B FRONT (fr ont speaker mode) Choices: LRG (large), SML (small) LRG Select this if you hav e large front speak ers. The unit directs the entire range of the front left and right channel signals to the front left and right speakers. SML Select this if you hav e small front speakers.
43 AD V ANCED OPERA TION SOUND 3 LFE LEVEL Use to adjust the output lev el of the LFE (low-frequency effect) channel accor ding to the capacity of your subwoofer or headphones. The LFE channel carries low- frequency special ef fects which are only added to certain scenes.
44 SOUND 5 CENTER GEQ (center graphic equalizer) Use this feature to adjust the built-in 5-band graphic equalizer so that the center speaker tonal quality matches that of the left and right front speakers. Y ou can select the 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, or 10 kHz frequencies.
45 AD V ANCED OPERA TION OPTION 1 DISPLA Y SET ■ DIMMER Use this to adjust the brightness of the front panel display . Control range: – 4 to 0 OPTION 2 MEM. GUARD (memory guard) Use this feature to prev ent accidental changes to sound field program parameter v alues and other system settings.
46 ADV ANCED SETUP MENU The ADV ANCED SETUP menu is displayed in the front panel display . y • During the advanced setup procedure, audio output is muted. • During the advanced setup procedure, only the ST ANDBY/ ON, STRAIGHT (EFFECT) and PR OGRAM l / h buttons on the front panel are av ailable for operation.
47 AD V ANCED OPERA TION REMOTE CONTROL FEA TURES In addition to controlling this unit, the remote control can also operate other A/V components made by Y AMAHA and other manufacturers. T o control other components, you must set up remote control with the appropriate remote control codes.
48 Setting remote control codes Y ou can control other components by setting the appropriate remote control codes. Codes can be set up for each input area. The follo wing table shows the def ault component (Library: component category) and the remote control code for each area.
49 AD V ANCED OPERA TION Controlling other components Once you set the appropriate remote control codes, you can use this remote to control your other components. Note that some buttons may not cor rectly operate the selected component. Use the input selector b uttons to select the component you w ant to operate.
50 Using the test tone Use the test tone to set speaker le vels so that the v olume from each speaker is identical when heard from your listening position. 1 Press AMP . 2 Press TEST . The unit will output a test tone. 3 Press u / d repeatedly to select a speaker to adjust.
51 ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION EDITING SOUND FIELD P ARAMETERS Changing parameter settings The initial sound field program settings will pro vide you with an excellent listening e xperience as they are. But you can create an original listening en vironment by altering some settings.
52 Sound field parameter descriptions Y ou can adjust the values of certain digital sound field parameters so the sound f ields are recreated accurately in your listening room.
53 ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION TROUBLESHOOTING Refer to the chart below when this unit does not function properly . If the problem you are experiencing is not listed belo w or if the instruction below does not help, set this unit to standby mode, disconnect the po wer cord, and contact the nearest authorized Y AMAHA dealer or service center .
54 Prob lem No sound from the center speaker . No sound from the surround speaker s. No sound from the subwoofer . P oor bass reproduction. A “ humming ” sound can be heard. The v olume level cannot be increased, or the sound is distorted. The sound effect cannot be recorded.
55 ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION Problem There is noise interfer- ence from digital or radio frequency equipment, or this unit. The unit suddenly turns into standby mode. Cause This unit is too close to the digital or high- frequency equipment. The internal temperature has become too high and the overheat protection circuitry has been activ ated.
56 ■ Remote control Prob lem The remote control does not work nor function properl y . Cause Wrong distance or angle. Direct sunlight or lighting (from an in verter type of fluorescent lamp, etc.) is striking the remote control sensor of this unit. The batteries are weak.
57 ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION RESETTING THE F ACTORY PRESETS If you want to reset all of your unit's parameters for any reason, do the follo wing. This procedure completely resets ALL parameters, including the SET MENU, level, assign, and tuner presets.
58 GLOSSAR Y ■ CINEMA DSP Since the Dolby Surround and DTS systems were originally designed for use in movie theaters, their ef fect is best felt in a theater having man y speakers and designed for acoustic effects.
59 ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION GLOSSAR Y ■ Sampling frequency and number of quantized bits When digitizing an analog audio signal, the number of times the signal is sampled per second is called the sampling frequency , while the degree of fineness when con verting the sound lev el into a numeric value is called the number of quantized bits.
