3 Introduction Thank you for purchasing the Action tec External 56K Call W aiting Modem. The combination of features in this modem offer you unprecedented flexibility .
4 Safety Inf ormation This modem is for use only with P ersonal Computers that have installation instruc- tions detailing user installation of this type of peripheral device. CAUTION: T o avoid shock hazard: The power cord and any other equipment to which this product will be attached must be connected to properly wired receptacles.
5 Product Features This 56K* P nP (Plug-N-Play)† External Call W aiting M odem allows your computer to connect to an ISP supporting V .90 or K56F lex ™ protocols (depending on your model). This manual describes the har dware and software installation procedures for your new 56K or external modem.
6 Bef ore Y ou Begin Using the T elephone Answering Machine Functions with W indows 95 In order for the voice functions of the modem to work properly under 32-bit T ele- phony API (T API) applications, you need to install the Unimodem V components for Windows 95.
7 Installing the Modem Installing the Interf ace Cab les The drawing below shows the back panel of the 56K External Call W aiting M odem and the correct cable installation.
8 Modem Controls and Indicator s The front of the modem contains the power switch and modem indicator lights. These are shown in the drawing belo w: Figure 2: Modem Indicator s and Contr ols The power switch is a push-on/push-off type. This switch controls the ON and OFF state of the modem.
9 Device Driver Installation and Configuration Configur ing Windo ws 95 Step 1 Upon start-up , Windows 95 detects the modem and displays the N ew H ard- ware F ound dialog box. Select ‘Driver from disk provided by har dware manufacturer ’ then Click OK.
10 Step 3 After copying and installing the modem ’ s drivers, Windows will detect a “W ave Device for V oice Modem ”, displaying the dialog box below .
11 Step 5 Windows will complete the installation process. T o check whether your modem was installed correctly , as well as determine what COM port and IR Q are assigned to the modem in Windows 95, click on the Modems icon in Control P anel and click D iagnostics .
12 Configur ing Windo ws 95B Step 1 Make sure the modem is connected to a serial port and the computer is turned on. Step 2 After star ting up the computer , Windows 95 detects the modem and starts the U pdate Device Driver Wizar d.
13 Step 4 After copying and installing the modem ’ s drivers, Windows will detect a “W ave Device for V oice Modem ”, displaying the dialog box below .
14 S tep 6 T o determine what COM port and IR Q is assigned to the modem in Win- dows 95, click on the M odems icon in Control P anel and click Diagnos- tics .
15 Configur ing Windo ws 98 Step 1 After you have connected the modem to your computer , turn the modem on. Start up your system. Step 2 Windows 98 will immediately display the N ew Har dwar e Wizar d and iden- tify the modem. Click the Next button. Step 3 At the next screen, click to select the option “Search for the best driver for your device.
16 Step 4 At the next dialog box, click to select CD-ROM drive. Before advancing to the next screen, insert the modem ’ s installation CD-ROM into the computer ’ s CD-R OM drive. W ait about ten seconds, so that the CD-R OM can be read, then click the N ext button.
17 Step 6 When installation of the modem ’ s driv er is successfully completed, click Finish . S tep 7 T o determine what COM port and IR Q is assigned to the modem in W in- dows 98, click on the M odems icon in Control P anel and click the Diag- nostics tab.
18 Configur ing Windo ws NT 4.0 Step 1 Start up your computer and log on to W indows NT 4.0. Step 2 After Windows NT restarts, on the taskbar , click S tart. On the S tart menu, click Settings, then click Control P anel and double-click the M odems icon.
19 Step 5 Insert the installation diskette or CD-R OM. Click the Have Disk button. When prompted for the path, type the drive letter of the CD-R OM drive, then click OK. Step 6 A list of modems will appear . Under M anufacturer , make sure “ Actiontec ” is selected, and under Models, make sur e “ Actiontec 56K Ext.
20 Step 7 Windows will confirm the choice you made in step 6. If the information is correct, click N ext. Step 8 Windows will complete the installation of the drivers for your modem.
21 Step 9 Y our modem should be added to the list in Modems P roperties. Click Close . Step 8 If y ou wish to use your modem to dial into a Windows NT Remote Access Server or wish to connect to the Internet, you will need to configure Dial U p N etworking.
22 Installing Comm unications Software Note: Some configurations ar e packaged without communications softwar e. Check your packaging to see if communications software is included.
23 A modem based T elephone Answ ering Machine works by using a sound car d equipped with a microphone to record an outgoing message. This message is stored as a .wav file which is transferred to the modem by the application program when an incoming call is detected.
24 The Call W aiting Feature With the Call W aiting feature from your telephone company and the Action tec ’ s Call W aiting M odem installed, your modem will notify you of an incoming call as you ar e surfing the W eb.
25 S tep 2 Or , you may pick up the handset and immediately hang up. N ote: U se of the Call W aiting feature requir es: • Action tec ’ s Call W aiting Modem • Call W aiting Service from your telephone company • Y ou are using your Call W aiting M odem.
26 • “Enable Call W aiting Ringing (Still Online)” --If you select this option the modem will ring when you receive an incoming call. With this option selected, you can pick up the phone, find out who is calling, hang up within approximately 7 seconds, and resume surfing the Internet.

30 Reconfigur ing a Windo ws Dial-Up Netw or king Connection When you attempt to check your modem windows may issue a “COM port open ” error message. This means there are some pr eviously installed modem configurations using the same COM P o rt as the Action tec 56K External Call W aiting Modem and are interfering with it ’ s operation.
