2 Introduction Intr oduction This User ’ s Guide provides detailed ins tructions for installing a nd configuring your Adaptec W ireless Router as part of a Local Ar ea Network (LAN) and/or W i reless LAN (WLAN). This Guide assumes you have a working k nowledge of your computer and that you are famili ar with the W indows operating system.

7 Getting to Know Y our Wireless Router Side View The DC-IN port is the port for the power adapte r . The four numbered LAN ports corr espond to the numbered LAN LEDs (see below) and connect your W ireles s Router to your wired LAN stations. Connect only Ethe rnet cable s to these ports.

10 Choosing a Router Setup Choosing a Router Setup First, you must decide which setup is appropriate for your network. Choose one of the situations listed in the boxe s below , then go to the associated section of this User ’ s Guide for help installing your W ireless Router.

Create a network with only wir eless computer stations by installing wir eless network adapters in all your computer s, then following the setup instructions provided in Setting Up a New Network (WLAN only) on page 15 .

13 Installing Y our Wireless Router Setting Up a New Netw ork (LAN & WLAN) Follow these instr uctions if you are incl uding your W ireless Router in a new network that includes both wir ed and wireless stations— a combination LAN and WLAN. T o connect your W ireless Router: 1 Find a suitable location to install your W ireless Router.
14 Installing Y our Wireless Router 5 Connect a network cable to one of the four LAN ports on your W ireless Router. (See the Figur e in Step 3 .) Connect the other end of the cable to an Ethernet port on your computer . 6 Add more LAN stations to your W ireless Router, if desired, using network cables.

These instructions assum e that you have an Broadband modem currently connected to one of your wired computer stations.

23 Understanding the W eb-based Wireless Router Utility Opening and Logging In to the Utility The instructions pr ovided in this section assume that your W ireless Router is set to its factory default settings. If yo u have changed any setting on your W ireless Router, pr ess and hold the INIT button for at least five seconds.
24 Understanding the W eb-based Wireless Router Utility 5 Click Login . The Device Info page appears. It provides basic status information about your W ireless Router. Note: Only one user at a time can be logged in to the Utility. An Administrator who is logged in but inactive is automatically logged out after a set time.

26 Configuring Y our Wireless Router Adjusting the W AN Settings Y ou must adjust the W AN settings on your W ireless Router to work with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) account. Note: See Before Y ou Begin... on page 9 for a list of information you’ll need t o successfully adju st the W AN sett ings.
27 Configuring Y our Wireless Router Adjusting the LAN Settings Y ou must adjust the LAN settings on your W ireless Router if you are connecting wir ed network stations. Note: See Before Y ou Begin... on page 9 for a list of information you’ll need to succe ssfully adjust the LAN settings.
28 Configuring Y our Wireless Router 4 Choose a DNS Pr oxy setting. If you select Enable , your W ireless Router provi des DNS service to your network stati ons using your ISP’s DNS server . (See DNS in the Glossary for mor e information.) 5 Adjust the IP pool values, if desired.
29 Configuring Y our Wireless Router Adjusting the Wireless Settings Follow the instr uctions provided for your s pecific WLAN: ■ If you are setting up a new WLAN using only Adaptec Ultra W ireless products, you don’t nee d to adjust any W ireless settings.
30 Configuring Y our Wireless Router 5 Click the Security tab. 6 Set the WEP Configuration settin gs to match your WLAN. If you ar e setting up a new WLAN, Adaptec r ecommends that you enable W ired Equivalent P r ivacy (WEP) on your WLAN as a security measure.
31 Managing Y our Wireless Router Managing Y our W ir eless Router Y ou can use the Utility to manage your W ireless Router and perform administrative tasks. Y ou can: ■ Monitor Internet usage on your internal network. See page 32 . ■ Save, re store, or r eset system settings.
32 Managing Y our Wireless Router Monitoring Intern et Usage Y ou can use the Device Info page to monitor the Internet traffic coming into and going out of your network. T o check Internet usage: 1 Open the Utility and log in. (See page 22 .) The Device Info page appears.
33 Managing Y our Wireless Router Changing System Settings Y ou can use the System Set ting op tions to save current system settings, or restore your system to its defau lt or saved settings. T o make sy stem setting changes: 1 Open the Utility and log in.

38 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN Y ou can use the Utility to change the set-up of your WLAN. Y ou can: ■ Change the transmission rate. See page 39 . ■ Require that all wir eless stations use a specified SSID to connect to your W ireless Router.
39 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN Changing the T ransmission Rate The default transmission rate set ting, Automatic , allows your W ireless Router to automatically adjust its transmission speed for optimal performance and the long est operating range.
40 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN Requiring Specified SSIDs Some wireless devices (such as wireless network adapters) can set their SSIDs to any , which allows them to connect to any available W ireless Access Point or W ireless Router . In some envir onments, such free access to your WLAN might be undesirable or pose security ri sks.
41 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN Changing the WEP Co nfiguration Settings Wir ed Equiva lent Privacy (WEP) is a security featur e that has two major functions: conf identiality and authe ntication.
42 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN Enabling WEP Encryption—New WLAN with Adaptec Wireless Devices Onl y T o enable WEP encryption: 1 Open the Utility and log in. (See page 22 .) 2 Click W ireless (802.11) under Basic Se tup on the menu list. 3 Click the Security tab.
43 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN 7 T ype in your chosen Passphrase , then click outside the PassPhra se box. The WEP Keys and the WEP Key to Use are generated. Note: Make a note of all the WEP settings so that you can apply them to all wireless stations on your WLAN.
44 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN Enabling WEP Encryption—Existing WLAN or New WLAN with Non-Adaptec Brand Wireless Devices If you are enabling WEP encryption on an existing WLAN, Adaptec suggests adjusting the WEP encryption settings on your W ireless Router first and on your wir eless network stations second.
45 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN 7 T ype keys in the WEP Key 1 to WEP Key 4 text boxes, then select a WEP Key to Use . The number of characters in your WEP Keys depends on the WEP Key Length: 8 Set Authentication. See Setting Authenti cation on pa ge 4 6 for help choosing a setting.

47 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN Filtering MA C Addresses Y ou can contr ol which wireless stations can connect to your W ireless Router by enabling MAC addr ess filtering. T o enable and set up MAC addr ess filtering: 1 Open the Utility and log in.
48 Using the Adv anced Router Functions Using the Advanced Router Functions Note: This section of the User ’ s Guide provides detailed information about your W ireless Router’s advanced functions, and assumes tha t you have advanced knowledg e of routers an d networks.
49 Using the Adv anced Router Functions Contr olling Access Y our W ireless Router’s Access C ontrol function allows you to control W AN-to-LAN or from LAN-to-W AN access. T o change Access Control settings: 1 Open the Utility and log in. (See page 22 .
50 Using the Adv anced Router Functions d Filter Packets from LAN —Set this option to Enable if you want to block users on your network fr om particular Internet activities, such as web surfing or retrieving Internet e-mail. After you select Enable, you are asked to enter the port number of any Internet service you want filtered.
51 Using the Adv anced Router Functions Setting W AN Ser vice Times Y our W ireless Router’s Service T ime Allocation function allows you to control LAN-to-W AN access. Y ou can set your W ireless Router to limit Internet access to a certain nu m b e r o f h o ur s i n a r ow .
52 Using the Adv anced Router Functions Bloc king W eb Site Access Y our W ireless Router’s W eb Site Blocking function helps you preve nt network users from accessing speci fic W eb sites. Y our W ireless Router can deny access to any W eb site containing a word that matches or partially matches any keyw ord you specify .
53 Using the Adv anced Router Functions Using the Virtual Ser ver Generally , a router pr otects your internal network compu ters by filtering o ut unrecognized packet s from the Internet. The refore, all network computers behind your W ireless Router ar e invisible to the Internet—the Internet sees only your W ireless Router.
54 Using the Adv anced Router Functions A list of commonly-us ed service port numbers and information is provided in the table: T o change virtual server settings: 1 Open the Utility and log in. (See page 22 .) 2 Click V irtual Server under Advanced on the menu list.

64 Glossary DNS Stands for Domain Name System and is a service that translates domain names (such as www .adaptec.com ) into IP addresses. Domain names are alphabetic and easy to remember , but the Internet is based on IP addresse s (such as 192.168.8.

67 Glossary preamble A pream ble is a signal used to synchronize the transmission tim ing on your WLAN. A series of transmission pulses is sent ahead of the data to signal a new transmissio n. This ensures that wir eless devices receiving the data corr ectly interpret when the transmission starts.
68 Glossary WEP W ired Equivalent Privacy ( WEP) is a security feature that provides confidentiality (by e ncrypting the data being sent over the radio waves of your WLAN) and authentication (by using a shared key between the wireless device and the Access Point or W ireless Router).
